I'm generally a good judge of this, and I truly believe that Rain Country is giving us her honest opinions. Because of that, I'm very glad to see the channel doing so well. No click-bait titles either! There's actually a company called Harvest Guard that makes near-exactly the same lids (Tattler actually split and this is the result) and they are significantly cheaper.

I love the forjars lids. The sealant is thicker than ball. Lately ball lids, the sealant is very sloppy. And the last 2 cases I have opened the lids have been dented on the rim. Any time I open a case I replace the lids with forjars. I have never had a failure with the forjars. Plus forjars came through when Ball literally dropped the ball during the election infection

My first canning experience with Tattlers was great. All the jars of chicken broth sealed. Sadly over about a six week period, they all unsealed themselves. I had been waiting on another order from Tattler to be shipped so I called to attempt to cancel the order before it shipped. The person who answered the phone was the owner of the company’s wife. She was shocked that I wanted to cancel the order and insisted that I speak with her husband. He called me and discussed the seal failures with me. His answer was that I didn’t clean the tops of the jar properly and probably didn’t tighten the lids enough after canning. I am absolutely anal about cleaning the rims and tightened the jars the best I could. I was able to cancel the order. They were very nice but couldn’t believe that I actually didn’t want more.
@RainCountryHomestead10 ай бұрын
The cleaning the tops of the jars would not have been my first thought, it would be if they were properly tightened both before going in the canner and after coming out. If you do not tighten them down after taking them out of the canner, they will not hold a good seal if they seal at all and if you tighten too much before going in the canner, they will either explode (lose their lids) in the canner or will not properly seal. They are tricky but once I got the hang of it, I have not had any issues and am glad I have plenty

I'm about to fill up the last of my "jar shelves" this season and my goal is to take an accounting of each size jar I have and get reusable lids for each next spring (tax return purchase)... I have about 1300 jars, so it's going to be a major purchase. I've had a preparedness goal for a long time to have a years worth of food on the shelf for our entire family at all times. I developed the goal 15 years ago after struggling to recover after a major surgery; and, just being unable to help put dinner on the table, as a Mom, hit me in a painful/ helpless kind of way. When the lid shortages came about in 2020 it reignited my stagnant goal.

@RainCountryHomestead Жыл бұрын
@@michelewilliams6241 That is very wrong and dangerous. Just as I explained in the video above, that is a good way to cause the jars to explode as they must be able to vent during the canning process, the tightening down only happens after removing from the canner. Even if they do not explode, they are unlikely to properly seal as they were not allowed to vent, which is necessary to pull the air out, like vacuum sealing. The way I showed in the above video is the right way and it works

It seems almost every KZbinr recommends the ForJars lids. Some say that's all they'll use. I personally choose to not use them until they're made here in the U.S. I'm not saying they aren't high quality, I just prefer to buy made in America whenever possible. I know people say they love the ForJar lids and that's fine. I will continue using Ball and Golden Harvest. Both are made in the U.S. at the same factory and both work perfectly for me. Also, the Golden Harvest are half the price of ForJar lids and when you do HUGE batches of canning, that makes a big difference.

I do not think many even realize they are made in China. It is not advertised and on some of the boxes it is very hard to see where it says that, I am sure that is intentional but that was the first thing I looked for when they sent me the lids for free, totally unsolicited. I was very wary of them at first for that reason but they do work great.

@RainCountryHomestead China will make whatever quality you want to pay for. Forjars is ordering quality. The counterfeit Ball lids that were showing up in 2021 were never meant to do anything but grab cash from unsuspecting Americans. I will stick with Superb, who has managed US production.

@@ruthfields3874 no. REAL Ball lids are still made in the U.S. There are fakes out there that have Ball on the box, but a simple look at the box and lids proves they are fake. Ball jars and lids are made are STILL made in the U.S. under the Newell Company (formerly Jarden), which is a giant corporation that also owns Kerr and Bernardin canning companies. So those Kerr lids you use are made in the same factory as the Ball lids. I'm not saying Forjars aren't good. Most of the glass jars that I reseal for shelf stable items are pickle jars, jam jars, salsa glass jars and prego glass pasta sauce jars with metal lids. I have a Vacmaster 230 and it was expensive, but I feel it has already saved me the cost of the unit, with the cheaper bags and the meat being protected from freezer burn it has turned out to be a good investment for my family. We no longer toss out leftovers, I bag and seal them and they get re-heated later and eaten. You can vacuum seal wet items in it. I often prepare pre-cooked meals and vacuum seal for later use. Our food waste has gone down to less than 10% and that includes the peels and cores and usual parts of loss due to prep.

I love Tattler and Superb. Azure Standard carries Superb lids. I won’t buy or use ForJars because aren’t transparent about being made in China on their website. I want to know that info BEFORE I buy, not find out after I’ve spent $ and read it on the box. They have been called out on that fact several time and have gone back and forth on their website from being upfront about it to being shady about it. Just having an “office” in Florida doesn’t mean anything, nor does years of saying they are going to build a factory in the USA to make them. If they were simply committed to be upfront, I would have considered buying their lids. I don’t have a lot of $ but I’d rather pay more to support jobs in the USA with a company that I respect. I love the reusability of Tattlers. I have had good success with them after getting through the learning curve. Take a look at those interviews & give them a try. I ONLY use Ball lids for vacuum sealing because for some time, when you open a new case of jars, the lids act like they're sealed on already & have a ring invention like they're used. I Tried Forjar and ended up returning them. They did not seal near as well as ball. I've never had a ball or Kerr lid fail, but I've had several of Forjar fail. They open even with my fingers.. That is with Pressure canning with an All Americane.. That is my experience, just sending back 200 of the lids because of the failures.

Do you have to boil the tattler rings before plac on jars?
@RainCountryHomestead Жыл бұрын
While it is not a bad idea to do so, no, you really do not and I only heat my lids when I am canning items going into jars hot or I am using recycled metal lids.
@cmay2840 Жыл бұрын
The Tattlers, can you pressure can with these? I am assuming it would have to be with a metal lid? I've never used them, so I don't know much about them.

Good info. Have you compared vacuum sealing with the tattler lids? If so if there a best way to vacuum seal with them?
@ccwriter2544 Жыл бұрын
Not to step on Heidi's toes, but she has commented in other videos that the tattler lids do not vacuum seal well and I agree. I have yet to have a tattler lid work for vacuum sealing for me. Maybe someone else will comment with a tip or suggestion for getting them to work 🤞
@lyndabuchholz1216 Жыл бұрын
@@ccwriter2544 Thank you! I had tried them and they seemed to work, then a few days later I tested them and they weren't sealed anymore. I was hoping there was a way for them to work. Maybe heating the lids and rings??
@RainCountryHomestead Жыл бұрын
Yes, they are about worthless when it comes to vacuum sealing, especially the newest ones. The older ones would work ok for that about 50% of the time but the new ones not at all

I've been using the For Jars lids this past year and no failures, as of yet. The only thing I've noticed is that when I label with my sharpie, it's very hard to wash off, like other lids, if you reuse the lid. I do have a question. Isn't there a tool to remove a canning lid, without damaging it? I thought I've seen something before but not sure.

I always use rubbing alcohol and a soft (NOT abrasive) cloth to rub off the ink and have not had issues

Cookwise on Amazon. Finally figured how to use it today, nary a mark on the lid. Thank you all for helping my resolve on reusing lids.

I have used ForJars since they were first available and have never had a fail! Just saying. Also not getting the 10% discount here. Other Tubers offer the discount.
@RainCountryHomestead Жыл бұрын
That is because I never agreed to be an affiliate, one has to do that in order to offer a discount. I am not trying to sell them myself, just doing a review on something i got for free without even being asked. Editing to add that affiliates also earn a percentage with every sale. It is a good thing for the creator and followers but even though I really like the ForJars as far as not having any issues and them working well, I am still not comfortable at this time becoming and affiliate like I am with products I use regularly and believe in

Is anyone else having trouble with the regular size rings? They are difficult to get on, then almost impossible to remove. All the fails I’m having now is due to the rings. Why? I think the newer rings are slightly too small. Not a problem with the large mouth rings.
@hoosierpioneer Жыл бұрын
I did buy ball jars new with lids and rings, half pints. They went thru pressure canning well, one puffed up with dents! But once cooked, I couldn't get the rings off! I tried putting in hot water, using a gripper, had to resort to a jaw type opener that tightens a I turn. That one can crush threads if I'm not careful.
@hoosierpioneer Жыл бұрын
@@cynthiafisher9907 thanks. I used the ball jar wrench that's not supposed to let you overtighten!🤔

Not ALL the lids we have we got for free. As I was very honest and up front about, the ForJars lids are made in China and I got them without asking for them. Other than the Tattler lids that were gifted to me from a follower, the rest of them I bought myself and they are made entirely in the US
