My favorite theory about why Garfield hates Mondays is that he's a cat, he doesn't have a job, he doesn't have the dread of a workweek looming over him. But Jon does - Monday is the first day Jon has to go back to work and leave Garfield alone after a weekend together. Garfield hates Mondays because he loves/misses Jon. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I wonder if cats actually care much about their owners going to work. They spend most of the day sleeping (they're generally more active at night), so it's not like they're missing much.

He might hate Mondays simply because he’s heard Jon complain about Mondays. Garfield doesn’t have to know why he should hate them, only that Jon hated them and nothing good seems to happen on that day. Or maybe on Monday Jon gets up super early to start working, possibly also forgetting Garfield’s breakfast too. And the mice seem to have jobs and maybe his mice friends are too busy to play. Mondays might also be the one day a week Jon can get off of work to take Garfield to the vet.

Man i was so sad when i heard them talk about second language and how you can only do it when you are young. Learning a new language is a great idea when you are "older", it exercises the brain which has some demonstrable benefits and you absolutely will achieve language proficiency if you keep at it. The critical period hypothesis has been so misunderstood and has been drawn to it's most destructive conclusion with a mindset like this. "Children acquire Language different than adults do" is maybe the only insight i would draw from what we understand about the critical period. A child brain might have some special language acquisition capabilities that an adult might not but do you really want that? Think about how long a child takes to be proficient in a language, how long did it take you to talk like your adult self? It took years and years and years. But now you are are an adult with a powerful supercomputer of a brain, you can use learning strategies that a child can only dream of and if you keep at it you will absolutely reach a satisfying level of proficiency. Some examples: I started learning English when i was 15, well past any supposed critical period for second language acquisition (the latest is supposedly 7 years of age) and i consider myself proficient in this language. I listen, read, write and speak in this language every day, now i'm 30 and am currently learning a third language and i absolutely intend to reach that same level, i'm taking classes and have a great teacher which makes a big difference in my opinion. Another example, even more impressive: Have you ever met international College Students? I've heard some wild stories like "yeah i live here for 3 years now and am learning the Language for 3 years." and they are taking College classes! Obviously a noticeable accent and some errors but enough to get a College degree. Isn't that amazing? Please don't resign to a feeling that you might have missed out on your chance to learn a new language, especially when you really want to learn a language.

Yes exactly. I didn't like learning English (as a second language) as a kid, but when I was 16 and got interested in KZbin I suddenly wanted to learn english to understand what those people were saying. Now in my mid 20s I'm learning French and even though it might have been easier learning it as a small child, I'm so much better at understanding the language now. As an adult you know how you want to speak and how language (in general) is used so it's actually a lot quicker. I've learned French now for 8 weeks and I'm as fluent in it now, as I've been after 4 years of learning English as a kid. Just find yourself a good teacher. Those language apps don't help much in my experience, but many schools offer courses to adults too. Honestly, you won't regret it
@shinybreloom40273 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the discussion they have is completely wrong and factually incorrect. A lot of grad students or professors I know started off not knowing English in their 20s and did so out of sheer and unyielding will, so the argument is really kind of pathetic to compensate for a lack of desire. For example, I know 4 languages and I'm planning on learning a fifth, and it's not really difficult as long as the will exists.

12:46 Interesting points for the learning languages in school. A) To get into my current college I had to take 2 years of a foreign language in high school. I never had to take a proficiency test or anything but it was a requirement to get into the college. B) because of that i took 3 years of high school Spanish. I am fluent in Spanish but not because of my high school classes. I actually learned Spanish by living in Mexico. I didn’t remember a god damn thing from any of my high school Spanish classes when I got to Mexico. So while I agree it would be good I think we need to upgrade our language education before we can make that an actual requirement so people will actually learn the language and not just be taking classes.
