Pro #1 is the food. The best Mexican (NEW Mexican actually, NM Mex is a category all it's own) food in the US is in NM. And the best Mexican food in NM is in Las Cruces! Your #2, abundance of sunshine is not a positive. The only places hotter are in AZ. However, due to the location of the ozone "hole" in the atmosphere, NM has harsher sun that causes more damage than it does in AZ (99% of my fam lives in AZ, so I know first hand). Your #3 (My #2) of Outdoor activities is true. Lots of hiking, bike riding. Skiing however, uh, no. Cloudcroft rarely opens due to lack of snow, and is a very small area. Ruidoso is jam packed with Texans, most of which don't know how to ski and it just makes for a messy mountain with people all over the ground. NOT a good place for anyone but the absolute beginner! YOur #4, also true. Large artist community, plenty of music and the infamous Farmer's and Crafts market downtown once or twice a week. "Drive to El Paso is incredibly scenic"? Seriously? NOT. Aerospace industry here, yes. Film industry? Absolutely. But you mostly list Albuq facilities and productions and not the ones actually filmed HERE. Capitain Fantastic, The Mule, At least 2 Transformers movies filmed here and or White Sands, Due Date, and older films such as Hang 'Em High, Stagecoach, The Missing, All the Pretty Horses... Nor the production studios here, the Las Cruces Film Festival, or the Las Cruces Film group "Film Las Cruces"... or the plans to build a multi-million dollar soundstage. The #1 con for LC is the lack of quality medical care. There are not many specialists here, and most drs only stay here a couple of years and leave. It is horrible for retirees and older folks that are in more need of medical care. Your #1 Con, the bus system is sort of correct, but for the wrong reasons. Buses in any city I've ever lived in work on a schedule. They have to, to be reliable. I don't see how being on a schedule is a con. The buses serve much more of the city than they used to if you live IN the city proper. They do not go out to the rich areas in the far West, or the Far East. The buses, however, ARE 100% FREE. There are no fees, and have not been in 4 years. #2 of your cons, not much nightlife, is true, however, that's mostly due to the lack of young people/college age and around there, hitting it in Las Cruces. Most kiddies go down to El Paso and the places in town are virtually empty from 10 on, causing them to have to shut their doors at that time or earlier. As for the lack of job opportunities this is true for specialized carriers in certain areas. Aerospace jobs are not something you get into once you move here. It's a specialized thing that people transfer here FOR. Film industry jobs are popping up and are quite abundant around the state. Other gov. jobs are here. Also City and State. Most youngish people work in the food or service industries. Jobs in the medical field are abundant. We have three full service Hospitals (one E tier 3 and one tier 4). Food trucks are a hot thing here. Many, many, individual entrepreneurs abide here. There are many many opportunities for creative and ambitious individuals wanting to start their own business. Not to mention the burgeoning cannabis industry with many connoiseurs from El Paso taking the opportunity of having LC so close nearby. Also, Amazon has a warehouse S of LC. If you are a computer programmer or IT specialist, your only hopes are in working in another industry that requires your help. Manufacturing is not here. Airlines. Not here. It's long, but LC is something I feel passionate about. Both pros and cons. But dude, having said all that, your music is WAY too high, and your vocal audio is WAY too low. ✌

I lived in Las Cruces for almost 50 years. The weather is perfect. The climate is great. Almost no natural problems like hurricanes earthquakes or tornadoes. However jobs are mostly those in the medical field or sciences. If you are a doctor or nurse getting a job is super easy. Perfect place to retire also. With a long warm season many with arthritis do not suffer pain as much. Little rain to ruin outdoor activities. As many people retire to Las Cruces not a lot of night life for those that want to live it up as many elderly people go to bed early. also has a high homeless population due to being close to the border as well as scarcity of jobs outside of medical careers. Also because of the closeness of the border there is also a large drug problem. Due to many of these factors (drugs and jobs mostly) crime is a problem as well. The school system is 50th in the nation. And Las Cruces is one of the bottom on the ladder. I moved out of Las Cruces because I did not want to get into the drug scene (selling or using) nor do I have the education to enter the medical field which is (as I stated before) one of the main positions available in the city. I miss the desert not the city.

Lived in Las Cruces from 1984 to 1995. Loved it! Lots of BLM land to go camping and Jeep trails in the valley areas. You can hike to the top of the Organ mountains too. Found many Native rock carvings out there too. Great place to ride a horse or jog on the irrigation canals. Used to jog on them for many miles.

For those that say there are not enough jobs in Cruces , you can just drive 20-30 mins south to El Paso , more jobs , entertainment. If you want a slower laid-back feel , Cruces is the best . Sure you can find more jobs in Dallas , Phoenix...big cities like that but you will not find the low cost, laid-back lifestyle and ease of outdoor activity.

I was living in Central Texas when diagnosed with COPD. I was knowledgeable about Las Cruces because a friend lived here who I visited many times. I thought the dry desert air would be better for my COPD, which to a degree it was, but the 4000 foot altitude cancelled out that benefit. I still love living here, but sadly I plan to move back to Texas where I can breathe easier. I also will miss my perfect view of the Organs.

Does not seem like there is much to do there from visits. However, if your an over-the-road trucker, its a good deal to live there and come home to it. Located in a valley and mild winters. I could live there as its open country and sunny much of the time (from my experience).

Disagree with retiring. I am retired and getting ready to move. The medical care is just not here. There's lots to do if you are an outdoors person. If not, then no, there isn't a lot to do. Quite frankly, I don't know what non-outdoors people do besides go to bars, so I really can't say what there is for indoor people.

@@thomasmiller8214 Lack of specialists. Lack of drs. We do have three hospitals, but do not have a level V trauma center. Trauma patients are almost always flown down to El Paso. For something like gastroenterology, for instance, there are three or four drs in town. Speech therapy, one (one just shut down). ENT, three. If you are a new patient for any dr, expect your first apt to be 4-6 months out (possibly more). If you are an established patient, for a specialist, it can still be as far out, but less commonly. For instance a gastro for an established paitent is often 5-9 months out.

Most People go to MD Anderson in Houston for cancer issues. It’s a 12 hr drive. Or drive to El Paso Airport, pay $622.00 round trip. Take the Lift to the Center 30 minutes away. Get a hotel for 1-2 nights because there’s only 2 flights per day & you could miss your appointment because the plane doesn’t arrive before until 8:30 & the center takes appt. Starting at 6 am.

I loved Las Cruces when I first moved there. The beautiful, newer & cheaper homes in Las Cruces makes one think they're getting a great deal. I liked how there's no tornado, hurricane, wildfire or earthquake. Before moving there, be aware that restaurants are mostly burger joints or Mexican food. I see NM license plates, including myself, driving to El Paso for better restaurants. If you want to get a job, it's who you know. Lot of jobs require you to speak Spanish. The better neighborhood to live in is Sonoma Ranch. Outside, there's not much to offer because too many homes are built and not enough good quality restaurants or entertainment. Many out of state transplants, esp. CA, want a Trader Joe's. The city has very low income to qualify for a Trader Joe's. Lots of residents are poor and depend on social entitlements. The city is ok with average and doesn't want to grow like El Paso. The city is more interested in social programs rather than give businesses incentives to operate in LC. We moved to another state that provided better job opportunities and better amenities.

LC is much nicer than EP. I almost moved to EP and glad I didn't. EP is more industrial, much much larger population. LC is more of an artsy, outdoorsy, sleepy, college town. EP is more of an industrial, busy large city with close Mexican connections (many ppl both in LC and EP have family in Mexico, but more EP than LC), lots of violence (from what I see in the news, like a shooting every week :O ) As for actual greenery, LC has higher mtns, and more rain runoff, as well as more shade from the rising sun. EP, has smaller mtns and the city is on both sides and around the S of the mtns. Leads to a slightly different climate - though mostly the same as far as temp. LC is prob slightly more humid than EP, and also more likely to snow.

The other big con here is the air quality. I have to blow my nose 50 times every morning and my throat is scratchy many days. No it's not just the dust either cause in Alamogordo, Ruidoso, TorC etc I have nowhere near the same trouble. And it's not just during allergy season, which is also pretty bad, but it's 90% of the year. I usually liked escaping to Cloudcroft or Silver City just to catch some mountain air. Dripping Springs was the quickest option during monsoon, that was my saving grace. It's a great place but the air just kills me. Also the jobs really really really suck

The film industry actually is pretty booming here. There are two major films going on right now. One is a Tyler Perry film. We have one studio, with another one coming soon, a City film office, a local film company (works to facilitate connections), and a dedicated soundstudio in the works. Not to mention the film courses added to NMSU recently with incentives and liasons with local film studios and major production companies. True about crime. I don't know about the comparison, but the homeless issue and drug issue is a really big thing here that is not addressed by the courts. Crimes are committed and the perpetrators are deemed incompetent to stand trial (due to drug addiction) and released 100% of the time (when they are users or on medication).

I've lived in CA, TX, NJ, and traveled all over the country. NM is the best state in the union. I wouldn't say that if I was going to stay living here. I don't want any more Californians moving here. But I am moving to be closer to family. It really is the best state. I do miss the beaches, but we have some great lakes. I don't know what you mean by "underserviced", but there are some areas I can see that. Medical, education. Other than that, I'd take NM over Cali any day of the year, where 30 yrs ago, a friend of mine bought a one bedroom house for 500,000 in a run down neighborhood. No one else I worked with could afford a home (gov job). I moved here and bought a 4 bedroom for 100,000 in a newer neighborhood. But... whatever man, you do you.

I am conservative from California but my husband wanted to be here by his family that has long roots. This area is hard core left wing democrat & their god is keeping the boarder full open & getting taxpayers to pay for everything: all abortions up to 9 months, transgendering young kids without parental knowledge, welfare, ebt, medical & housing vouchers for far too many people not working. Schools are the most beautiful I have ever seen, but the educational level of achievement is lower than all other states. The big thing is they call themselves multicultural when they only adhere to people from Northern Mexico & ignore the native New Mexico Hispanics that are often really more Native American & all whites are Anglo because they don’t know any better.
