I used to equally squeal with delight and dread the GAS whenever a new compressor was revealed on this channel. Ever since picking up the Source Audio Atlas, that hasn't happened. My entire pedalboard is basically purchases inspired by this channel. Keep up the great work at helping me destroy my financial discipline.

Gregor help me out here. I have played bass for almost 40 years and in that time have owned 3 compressors..mostly because I thought I should rather than any need.. ..both of which I have no clue what they were doing...I play with the knobs and the only thing I get out of them is the feeling that my sound is being restricted with a thump. I know what a compressor does and should do and the principle but I watch KZbin videos on my full surround system and people turn them on and I'm like.... What..where's the difference??? I just don't hear a difference..normally just a bump in volume...so is what they are doing being negated by KZbin. The only time I hear a real difference is when engaged, compressor demos are rarely at unity with the clean sound. I've often thought that compressors are the placebo of pedals and actually just boost the signal. I know that I am wrong but maybe you could do a video at ridiculous extremes to really show the effect. The woman in the video has great technique so hardly needs a compressor and maybe through so many years of playing my technique is consistent enough that a compressor makes little difference...although I doubt it. I would genuinely like to hear the difference...but maybe it is just a feel thing. It becomes even less obvious with pedals like the cali 76 because when people mix in the clean blend the effect becomes further reduced. So is it an issue with KZbin over compressing videos and you can hear massive difference in the studio...or am I destined never to understand what a compressed sound is like?
@basstheworldofficial
@basstheworldofficial Жыл бұрын
compressors are there to highlight certain details of your sound. unless it's metal or slap bass, I like to use rather subtle compression that you can indeed barely distinguish from the original sound. But when it kicks in, it's still there, subtly forming the bass a more 3 dimensional and beautiful sounding when done right.

I’d listen to this video again with good headphones. Ive always used compression while recording but very rarely live. Starting to use it live now and really enjoying how it makes my bass sit in the mix. Love letting long notes blossom and evens out the sound when switching techniques in the middle of a tune. It’s not for everyone though, and I get it. To me it’s just another color on my palette to use when I want.🙂

@@basstheworldofficial hi Gregor I know what it is supposed to do and the principle of compressors, I just really struggle to hear it. That's why I wondered if KZbin severely reduces the effect due to its own compression. The system I watch it on at home is pushing audiophile levels so I would expect to hear more of a difference. It's not just on your video ...I have been down a massive rabbit hole trying to hear and understand compression. The only time I got close is playing the 16th notes at the beginning of Elephant gun ( Dave lee Roth, Sheehan on bass) using a compressor and it did what I expected and evened out the volume of each note, a little. I have a darkglass super symmetry, a TC electronic spectra comp and the compressor that's built in to the EBS Sheehan drive... I struggle to hear any difference when set to unity gain...and as I said , for me that's where a lot of demos fail...they turn on the compressor and the volume jumps, by it's very nature enhancing the sound ( in my opinion) but not demonstrating the "sound" of a compressed bassline. Maybe I just need to spend more time playing with it...or perhaps I am just happy not using one
@bassmandudge

@@keithkenyon3845 I definitely struggle wit telling any difference. As I said to Gregor the system I listen to KZbin on is virtually audiophile level so I would expect to hear it. Clearly if I need to use high quality headphones to hear it then I probably don't need it. I would love to know exactly what people hear when they talk about hearing over compressed or highly compressed guitar. I know it's all on me...I just find it really frustrating..

@@bassmandudge You are not alone. I have always been told that I should use a compressor. Even Billy Sheehan said so! But I do not hear it! I have owned several, and honestly, could not even tell if they were on or not.

I'm a little hesitant in regards to the UAD pedals. While they obviously sound amazing, they are digital and therefor each pedal in the line adds latency, which I think is an issue when UAD has the concept that you buy a pedal per effect. Are there any specifications regarding this?
@basstheworldofficial
@basstheworldofficial Жыл бұрын
There’s no latency. The chips are powerful enough to completely hide the pedals are digital at all. The whole experience feels very authentic and analog
@JM_2019
@JM_2019 Жыл бұрын
@@basstheworldofficial Technically there must be some latency with digital pedals, since there is AD/DA conversion. And while I totally understand that it is negligible for a single pedal, I still wonder what happens if you combine three or four pedals.

hey just in fairness I think you should disclose when a pedal is using software. Please don't just act like it doesn't make a difference whether it's using real parts or lines of code. These are digital modeling pedals and a lot of people would never put a d/a convertor at the beginning of their sound, holy hell.
