Fantastic. I had the 3rd type. However the pressure cup was "welded" to the assembly from 20 years of rust. Every other video did not show how all the pieces of the drain assembly went together. So I didn't know that the pressure cup was a separate piece and that it was "welded" to the strainer top. Once I knew that, I could use tools to CUT the pressure cup off from the main strainer assembly. THANKS!!!

Thank you, great presentation and good examples. My old strainer came without putty, maybe it just dispersed but I never had a leak. If understood correctly, the new drainer I purchased needs the putty. As the newer plumbing connections need less and less of any Teflon tape, I wasn't sure if putty was needed. So I've got my answer :) EDIT: I just saw now that you have affiliate links, I definitely would have purchased the pieces, especially Moen... too bad I didn't see your video earlier.

But how tight do you go? I've put it on too loose so the putty eventually breaks away as well as too tight where I've squeezed out the rubber gasket. Is the goal to get metal to metal contact up top?

HI, We need to replace the basket strainer but we have a PVC/plastic tailpiece. A new tailpiece washer comes with the new strainer. The existing tailpiece has a plastic nut to use in attaching the tailpiece to the bottom of sink strainer. The new basket has a metal nut for the same purpose. Is the metal nut required even when attaching a PVC tailpiece to the bottom of the steel drain basket? If so please explin the benefit of using the metal nut instead of the plastic nut in this example. Thanks for the video and any further input you can provide!

Why not use another rubber washer in place of the plumber's putty? I'm so sick of the putty failing and causing leaks after a year or two. I'm ready to try something different, like I described above. What is your opinion? I can't imagine this idea failing as fast as the putty, if at all.

Curious....you didn't show the 4th type of strainer(the ones with 3 thumb screws or Philips screws) Which appeared to be nice because the basket won't spin when you're tightening it.... But I don't know I've never used one. Of the strainers that you did showcase which one seems to be the best?

Different models will come with different methods to seal the top flange. Either a foam gasket or thin rubber gasket which can take the place of the plumber's putty. Some plumbers just throw the foam gasket or thin rubber gasket away and use plumber's putty, because that's what they are used to. I wouldn't use 2 methods though. Only use the supplied gasket or plumber's putty, not both. In the end it's your call.
@c.a.greene8395

Thank you for your answer, it was a little late so I just threw the foam seal out and went with the puddy... Not a big fan of this screw assembly model, I don't know, I am kind of old fashioned when it comes to replacement parts...( I learned how to do this in high school home owners class for an extra credit,,,,taught us to change our own oil, rotate the tires, fix the lawn mower and repair plumbing...best class I ever took as I actually learned things I can use in real life! Great video, I wish mine came out that easy. After who knows how many years my basket leaked, I went to touch the lock nut, and the whole tail piece just fell off. The problem is the basket and cup do not want to release themselves from the sink. On a side note, I wish there was one with a way to stop my wife from putting food in the drain and wondering why it gets clogged all the time...

Best so far but still going thru it so fast visuals are everything perhaps showing the nut that lifts basket into place as well as the nut that secures to drain each going different directions getting the ring of paper under the rubber gasket to line up the same time your tightening in place nothing can slip outta place tightening the basket squishing out the extra putty giving it a tight fit without over tightening….. girl power today 🥲👏🏻👍

Don't know who engineered this stuff, but I always get leaks with plumber's putty and rubber washer with paper friction disc. After everything leaks, whether small or large leaks, the paper friction disc disintegrates. One would think manufacturers could do better, or I'm doing something completely wrong.
