In any Ethernet communication scenario, the device, equipment, or software that will request a TCP/IP socket connection and then, once established, will issue messages to read data from or write data to a different device, equipment, or software will be the communication Client. Whatever device, equipment, or software is merely listening on a Ethernet network, waiting for some Client to request a socket connection and then send requests to read or write data and will allow the socket connection and respond to the communication requests from the Client will be the communication Server. If you think of a restaurant analogy, when you go out to eat, you pick the restaurant to go to (you initiate a connection). you order food (make a request to receive food) and later you pay for the food (give money/info to the restaurant). You are the Client, in this analogy. The person who comes to your table, takes your order, goes to the kitchen and returns with your food and give you your bill after the meal is your Server. In the automation world, there are no rules as to whether a particular devices will be a Server, Client, or (sometime) both at the same time, based solely on whether it is a PLC, HMI, or other device. You will have to consult the manufacture's documentation for each specific device to see if it will be a Client, Server, or might act as both, like our Ethernet in-chassis and stand-alone gateways can do.

A PLC is a Programmable Logic Controller - it's equipment that's designed to be used in the control of industrial or manufacturing processes, such as those on a plant floor. Another term you may hear is PAC - or Programmable Automation Controller. This article explores how a PAC can be used and its differentiators: www.motioncontroltips.com/when-to-use-a-programmable-automation-controller-pac/
