When I worked in a welding shop when a young guy I fabricated an aluminum sluice box for a group going into the Amazon over 35 years ago. I'm sure designs have changed. Any good references to look at to fab a optimum box from?I

Love it. Were you a civil engineer? Thats what i started in - after junior yr switched to chemical engineering plus dual degreed in Environmental Science (based on my fresham yr in College of Forestry at OSU).

If one plans on classifying material down to say 1/4" prior to running would riffles still be necessary in a sluice?

Yes, riffles help classify, but their main effect is to cause zones of flow that cause heavy material to separate from light density material.

Water slows down by time it gets to the end of the sluice, due to friction,
