Following on from a new diagnosis of prostate cancer can be a stressful time for a man and his family. For the majority of men they are diagnosed after having a PSA test which returns an elevated level. After this most are referred to a urologist who will organise and MRI prostate, prostate biopsy and a staging PSMA scan. Beyond this, there is a lot of information to try to get your head around whilst trying to decide which prostate cancer treatment, if any, you decide to pursue.
The aim of this video is to provide you with the basics information regarding some of the details about robotic assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy as a means of definitive treatment. This is not a form of focal therapy but whole gland prostate management. The main concepts to be aware of include the likelihood of cure from an oncology perspective and the functional consequences including urinary incontinence, which for the majority of men is short term, and erectile dysfunction for which there are several different types of treatment. In this video we explore some of these issues and hopefully clarify what can be expected following a robotic radical prostatectomy.
