I don’t understand what Windows has to do with previous versions. Isn’t going back done through Snapshot? 6:54

Snapshot Replication or Hyper Backup? My current setup uses Hyper Backup to my 2nd NAS at my parents house. Is Replication a better setup?
@LAWRENCESYSTEMS

Hyperbackup does much more than just files/folders
@danielmcgowan9534

My understanding is that you want to do Hyper backup and then take snapshots of the backups as a way to make your system a difficult malware target.

@@danielmcgowan9534 I have both local snapshot and Hyper Backup enabled. But not Snapshot Replication.

Thanks! This is great (taking snapshots every 5 minutes) but how would I prevent taking snapshots during overnight hours?

Their ha is nice too. Just found out a client survived a ransomware attack as their passive unit was able to be recovered from as it was the only piece not attacked. The largest music festival in the world still continues today.

The fall over and snapshots are very super cool because if one of them fails you just fail over to the other nas and then contune using that one fix the other one and then upto you then keep using the new nas or reverse the replication and failback to the original nas Should note this is more for high availability and is really not a backup because both could get compromised at the same time (but very unlikely if correct security precautions are taken) For backup you should have a 3rd nas (for if it ever happens Synology gets zero day reasons ideally not a Synology nas, probably netgear readynas or qnap as it also supports snapshots) for Hyperbackup (does mean it can write to the backup so not ideal) or rsync backup (pull rsync recommend as main nas can't command a delete or write anything to backup) and ideally cloud backup for disaster recovery If your not using replication then only 2 nas's are needed (replication is more for business that need high uptime)

Hello, thanks for the video. I am a great fan of Synology eco-system. I don’t use this feature at the time, because I don’t own another Synology Nas. Do you know if the the replication process is at file level or block level?
@LAWRENCESYSTEMS
@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Жыл бұрын
Block level and snapshots work using a single system

Hello Lawrence, nice video, thanks. About the failover, you would need to point the DNS to the new NAS, right?

Can the same be done with TrueNAS? Or do their snapshots not work as Volume Shadow Copies?

How does this compare to having two Synologies in HA configuration?

Well, it's not an HA solution so not sure how to compare them.

Ideally shouldn't save the login password on a locally networked pc because if the admin pc/laptop was the one who was compromised you have a bad day if they dump all the passwords and then delete and turn off all snapshots (dsm admin login should only be from dedicated secure laptop with bunch of locked usb backups) With domains unsure how Synology handles when the domain controller has been compromised as it usually manages the usernames and passwords (but Microsoft is making it quite harder to use non Microsoft domain devices)

Why I dont recommend synology if you're a linux user - you cant do basic things like give ssh keys for use with SCP unless you make every server_user in admin group - what idiotic snot at synology came up with that???? sure, you can use rsync and scp to their respective shares, all good - BUT - you have to run the trhings manually because some idiot decided non admin users cant ssh in - to setup keys...... or do synology think its more secure by allowing every server including remotes, to be added as an administrator!
