(9:44)After that, Jill Robbins had a report on conditions in schools in a town in the Western U.S. state of Colorado. In Aurora, Colorado, public schools have begun using a method called translanguaging to support English learners as they adjust to learning in a new language. About 3,000 Spanish-speaking students have entered the town’s school system. They report being taught in Spanish not English. Census number say one third of residents in Aurora speak a language other than English at home. School officials say were not prepared for the wave of foreigners coming to live there. learningenglis...
(16:06) Then Caty and Jill talk about a word from the AP story that Jill reported on: “translanguaging.” The word seems to describe when students and teachers translate things that non-English speakers do not understand into their own language instead of using English.
(18:00) Finally, Jill and Andrew Smith present the Lesson of the Day. They use the VOA Learning English program Let’s Learn English to teach lessons about the English Language. On Lesson 49 of the series, Anna is sent to the National Spy Museum to report on the interesting place.
