I think that the thing that matters most in this video is the emphasis on a GOOD skimmer. The market is flooded with cheap skimmers and steers new reefers in the wrong direction. I can speak first hand to purchasing less than good skimmers thinking I was saving money but in the end I bit the bullet and spent $300 on a GOOD skimmer (50 gal tank mind you) and my water quality is better, maintenance/water changes have reduced by 1/2, and piece of mind knowing that I have a high performance piece of equipment that will last for many years with good product support too.

Protein skimmers are so cool. It’s basically like a mechanical shoreline for your fish tank.

Great topic. Ive run my tank without a skimmer for sometime with great success. I think in the future i will buy a smaller skimmer than needed for my tank so that I get the oxygen etc but just not over skim my tank, which is what I feel is happening when I run it.

Skimmers while not 100% necessary sure do make having a saltwater aquarium much easier and enjoyable.

exactly, lots of people brag about not using a skimmer which is great but..... why not. Its surprising how much it pulls out of the water. A skimmer and refug are the staples of easy reefing.

If it's a new skimmer, I usually use the cycle period to run it and break it in :)

I have a 20 nuvo aio andf a 36 gallon with a big esshops and I have no problem getting the aio to work without a top off because I can just lower or up the container cup but for some reason I cant dial in my other skimmer! It either skims to fast or not at all it seems. I try too get a dry skim I think you call it where it has thick bubbles that sort of acculmulate then fall over. Its it just a pointless effort because I dont have an ato top off? Do you think that is why? Sometimes it seems to take more water then sometimes less but it never stays skimming!

Can you move the skimmer into a different chamber where the water level doesn't fluctuate? An inch or two in water level is a big deal, especially when it comes to small nano skimmers.

8 have a boyu r 440. Its a freshwater set up. Tyere is a protein skimmer in it, but idk if it works. Its completely quiet, not a damn noise, no movement nothing. I see no bubbles or foam collection. Today i took it out of the tank and in a bucket of water and switched it on, but nothing.

Your not going to get the same bubbles in fresh water as you would in salt water

Yes. Unfortunately, skimmers will not work in freshwater.

Unfortunately, protein skimmers will not work in freshwater. The bubbles are much too big to have the same effect.

Even when using a skimmer we would advise doing scheduled water changes. This is not only to help with nutrient removal, but also to replenish trace elements within the tank. (:

Both have different purposes for filtering your tank. If you are diligent about changing the filter socks or pads roughly every 3 days, you may not need a skimmer.

Youre wrong. The sludge is hydroPHOBIC not philic. Its like how oil separates from water. The sludge is trying to minimize contact with the water so it goes to the air/water interface of the bubbles which then carry it away

The first video I didnt like. There isn't a good skimmer video. How does water level affect skimmer. Is lower better? Higher? I get how to adjust the air level and what that does. Just not how to fine tune a skimmer for most efficiency.
