Interior Secretary Deb Haaland announced new federal protections for the sacred site called Chaco Canyon in early June.
The UNESCO world heritage site is located in New Mexico near the four-corners area and is a sacred place to many pueblos and the Navajo Nation.
For the next 20 years, the government will not allow any new oil and gas leases on federal lands around a 10-mile buffer zone of the park.
Even though the decision does not affect already existing leases, it was not welcomed by local Navajo people in the area. ICT's Aliyah Chavez reports.

Once you accept payment for mineral rights, you give the petro companies carte blanche to do whatever they want on YOUR land. If you don't want them there, tell them to keep their money. You have a hard choice to make. My dad, a Cherokee, would never take money from the evil companies who destroyed OUR land.

A lot of those people are elderly and have no other form of income. Their lifeline is the mineral rights.

That whole region is so beautiful. It was one of the qualities I found so great in the Chaco region. It is the stillness of life, the remoteness and the simple living that make that area so precious. Money should never be the reason you turn over your rights... and it should NEVER be the reason you turn over your land! I'd rather die broke, hungry and proud, than die rich, full and ashamed.

What is your solution for these folks living in a very remote undeveloped region. If you never been to the Chaco Canyon region...there are no high paying jobs within a 120 mile radius. Closest major city is Farmington, NM....123 miles by rough roads. What is your solution...besides moving away? Navajos are very stubborn. Navajos are not moving away...just to accommodate Liberal, Environmentalists, and Pueblos (who no longer been living in the area for over 300 years). This is Navajoland now and has been for over 150 years. Destroying land...that ship has sailed the moment Christopher Columbus set foot on America's shores.

I agree with them that this has been a blessing to the Indians. I have toured through oil fields around Chaco canyon and the sites a clean and operated responsibility. This band is ridicules. This region is very dry, no river run through it, no lake either and very dry. All the tank batteries are inside enclosure where and spillage is contained. Pipeline are monitored by aircraft and truck travel pipeline for surveillance of ant issues.

I'm not native but this division between indigenous peoples didn't work when Europeans invaded this land and it won't work now. It's your weakness; it's not a strength. Just an observation from the outside. I wish you peace and prosperity.

Most Navajos are just extremely greedy for land. A lot of Navajos do a lot of inter-fighting with each other across the Navajo reservation. This has to do with grazing permits and land use area permits. Navajos tend to get very territorial against each other and expand their imaginary claims to the land with these permits. These Navajo grazing permittees have too much veto power and they prevent economic development. This is why there is poverty on the Navajo reservation. This problem is the tribe's alone. I don't understand what colonization has to do with this when it is the native people who are radical and doing the inter-fighting among each other. The federal government continues to subsidize the Navajo Nation - in which Navajo Nation continues to corrupt the money that is given to them. Therefore, I disagree with the young lady's premise about internalized colonization and the larger Dine' grassroots. Colonization has allowed us Native Americans to have a better livelihood with technology and advancement. Otherwise, we would still be living in the wild with buckskin. It's these Navajo grassroots people who dictate the land across the Navajo reservation with their permits. Maybe she should look at the Navajo Nation objectively? Best.

Colonization took us to the brink of extinction. The treaty signers saved us. The land is not ours. You’re correct. The feds created the in-fighting through it’s tyrant practices involved with owning land. Not us. Better to just ride the waves instead of make them. Plenty of our families would not be here without the foreigners, but at the same time, they’re wrong on so many levels and we just refuse to mobilize seriously.

Wait...."colonization has allowed us native Americans to have a better livelihood with technology and advancements. Otherwise we would still be living in the wild with buckskin." Supposedly your native....and you believe the narrative that your ancestors were primitive "wild" people, who were saved from their savagery and elevated into civilization by the billegana colonization?!?!? No wonder you don't understand, your as colonized as it gets. Your ancestors weep at your complacency and neglect for K’é.

Osiyo on the Dark Side of the Moon! One White Brother here of mixed heritage. What one white? The one who one. OB1. Pick another color! Gosh darn golly he must have just jumped right off the screen! Indeed Obey Wan Kan Be. While that may be funny what I’m about to say is quite real… “Our conversation with the Federal Gov. to Free Native American Political Prisoner Leonard Peltier who’s been falsely imprisoned going on half a century and to honor the Indian Treaties (pre-constitutional law) forming the basis of our great nation was almost entirely redacted on national TV shortly before the insurrection because it demanded that the then President also relinquish the nuclear codes which has never been done. Oct. 2020 I spoke with at least around a dozen federal agents including the FBI and even the US Navy. Trump says before being elected, “We have nuclear weapons so why can’t we use them?” Nancy Pelosi confirmed to our international audience on national TV that indeed they where removing the nuclear codes with the help of the CIA and if anyone has any questions they could just call up and ask. What followed only confirms nuclear tensions where about to explode. The redaction is worth at the minimum trillion$ more than all moneys because with nuclear war lights out! Nothing! This simultaneously addressed the other largest nuclear power and all the rest without having to address any of them directly except our own.” This is a true story. If you alike what you see please support the Peacekeeper. Please allow me to retire and pass the torch. I should not need to utter another word. What was done never needs to be repeated. The whole story must be told with or without the redaction so what happened in Japan never happens again. The hardest work is finished and far too much already been sacrificed. We’re much too close to loosing everything. The freedom of all unjustly incarcerated sets the precedence both on the national and international scale for human rights violations leading us into this mess. If we cannot connect the bigger picture to what is happening on the human scale we’ll loose everything within the next century including the environment. “We inherit the earth from the future generations.” Thank You! Your Peacekeeper and friend P.S. There’ve been many like Christ or the Buddha but Krishna is a thief. Best to be, “Wanted” in Hopi Tribal Court for stealing all of space-time. During the proceedings the Peacekeeper will demonstrate just by being seen the supernatural. Know me (No-me). You know like, “Menominee.” “Brian” means King. Some say I’m all, “Ram.” Indeed 100% Ram (pronounced “wrong”).
