Ever wonder how caricatures become so popular? Publishing tracts that sell 750 MILLION copies is one way. In this video, I break down some of the arguments that Jack Chick makes in one of his most popular tracts, "Are Roman Catholics Christians?" In doing so, I evaluate some bad arguments about Catholicism and touch on ways that we can disagree more charitably to bring people together, rather than driving them apart.

About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a KZbin channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 23 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

As a Bible believing Christian, I reject Roman Catholicism, and those who refuse to repent and come out of that false religion, are not Christians. Unrepentant Catholics are NOT "brothers and sisters in Christ." You blasphemers are responsible for leading precious, lost Roman Catholics even FURTHER away from God. The wrath of God shall remain upon you, you disgusting apostates, for the souls you're leading to Hell - along with yourselves! This is infuriating to me!!! You are even more ANTICHRIST than the brutal system of Rome that has massacred literally TENS OF MILLIONS of Bible believing Christians and Jews throughout history. The Lord Jesus Christ rebuke thee. @YAJUN YUAN Before you assume that that's a problem, it would be better for you to do your own research as to what Catholics (AND Orthodox Christians) REALLY believe about the Eucharist, and WHY. It's quite different from the exaggeration presented in your comment.
@masterchief8179
@masterchief8179 Жыл бұрын
@YAJUN YUAN So you haven’t researched well. Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy and the Assyrian Church, all the apostolic churches affirm to adore - with the worship due to the divine - unequivocally the Eucharist after the consecration/ epiclesis. They give the sacramental body and the sacramental blood of the Lord the worship of “latria” - and if they deny it they would be treated as heretics under their own ecclesiastical rules. So you are incorrect all over again here, brother. What you are saying is that the tradition of adoration OUTSIDE of the liturgy of the sacrament, usually in the ostensory or in the silent prayers in front of the churches’ tabernacle (for the effect of silent contemplation: Catholics call it “Eucharistic meditation”) is genuinely a Western practice. And the reasons are quite clear for it: especially after so many acts of profanations spread throughout Europe during the Protestant revolutions, the dissemination of the monstrance and the practice of Eucharistic meditation was seen as a pious means to combat the public abhorrent offenses that took place and also to educate the faithful in a time when people were massively illiterate and uneducated, inspiring them to understand the doctrine through contemplative piety instead of a much complex theological reasoning in light of disputes. Albeit there are historical records of the Eucharistic meditation in monasteries during the Ancient Era in the East and the West, the first registered act of “perpetual adoration” using the Eucharist in an ostensory (monstrance) for uninterrupted devotion of the faithful in meditation, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia (check “perpetual adoration”), happened in France, 1226, to celebrate and give thanks for the victory over the Albigensians in the “Siege of Avignon”: as it is widely known the Cathars (just like some versions of Protestantism later) denied the Real Presence and acts of profanation spread all throughout the Albigensian areas in France. It was against the theological disputes ignited by the spread of Catharism that the Catholic dogma was defined in 1215 by the way. In 1264 Pope Urban IV instituted the feast of Corpus Christi ("the Body of Christ") with the publication of the papal bull ‘Transiturus’. None of those conditions (Catharism and Protestantism) happened in the East.
@masterchief8179
@masterchief8179 Жыл бұрын
@YAJUN YUAN Then you don’t know what a “condition” means. If Catharism and Protestantism happened in other parts of the globe (or if the schisms hadn’t happened so as to wound Christian unity prior to the Cathars and the Protestants), the Eucharistic meditation would be simply and rigorously universal. Notice that even some Protestants practice it, like High Church Anglicans and some HIgh Church Lutherans. About the “prophetess” Ellen White, the one who founded the Seventh Day Adventism in 19th century Michigan/USA, I really didn’t understand your point but I hope you aren’t really comparing Ellen White to the episcopal office and guardianship of the successor of St Peter.

@Calvinism is a doctrine of devils Quoting this, I only just now caught your screen name. Lol. That whole "sinners prayer" is a theology I'd love to delve more in to. What's particularly fascinating to me is it is often propagated among those who most strongly insist on "sola scriptura," yet, at best, requires an elaborate and selective hermeneutic method that has clearly been passed along by "tradition" even if those who teach it insist otherwise. But even the words "save" and "salvation" have developed such entirely different meanings among certain Protestant-derived theologies as to be all but unintelligible to those formed in an Orthodox or Catholic understanding (and can often be a point of confusion for the latter if raised somewhere like the United States or Australia where the dominant Christian cultural milieu is Protestant.

@@kendaugherty3828 hmm, nope
@kendaugherty3828
@kendaugherty3828 Жыл бұрын
@Cyril Navarro I pray that you are born again. First, Catholics do not care about the salvation of souls. Why? If the Holy Spirit is NOT in you, you are of the world still & cannot please God.(Ref. Romans 8) This is the Catholic Church in all its glory concerning salvation: "The Church's RELATIONSHIP with the Muslims. "The PLAN of SALVATION also INCLUDES those who ACKNOWLEDGE the Creator, in the FIRST PLACE amongst whom are the MUSLIMS; these profess to HOLD the faith of Abraham, & together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day."(Catechism 841) Do Muslims have a believing faith? Muslims, who do NOT have the "faith of Abraham" who in fact "believed God," DENY Jesus Christ of Nazareth as God incarnate; they DENY Him as the "Lamb of God who [took] away the sin of the world," (John 1:29) by His death and resurrection. Jesus is the Creator (and Judge) of the universe. Muslims do NOT believe Jesus to be the Creator or Judge. Yet, the "plan of salvation" has been granted to the Muslims by Rome. Without the Holy Spirit, Catholics will say anything, even if it opposes Jesus' own words. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No ONE comes to the Father EXCEPT through Me."(Jn 14:6) Pay attention to Cardinal Reinhard Marx's words in 2011 (the same year that the Vatican called for a "global Government") when he penned a farewell address to religious leaders who attended an Ecumenical gathering in Munich, Germany, saying "Religions...HELP humanity TURN to God." Really??? Here's the entire excerpt (paragraph): "Particularly, RELIGIONS make an important CONTRIBUTION in GUIDING HUMANITY towards a better future. They HELP it TURN to God, Creator and Father of humankind. They POSITION ALL people in a WIDER, COMMON HORIZON. We ACCEPT this MISSION, and we commit ourselves to taking the PATHWAY of comprehension and reconciliation." What did Jesus say about the WIDE way that the Catholic Church is taking, the "WIDER COMMON HORIZON," versus the NARROW?: Jesus said, "Enter by the NARROW gate; for WIDE is the gate and BROAD is the way that leads to DESTRUCTION, and there are MANY who go in by it. Because NARROW is the gate and DIFFICULT is the WAY which leads to LIFE, and there are FEW who find it."(Matthew 7:13-15) So, what's this "MISSION" Marx is referring to: The "MISSION" of the Catholic Church is "RESTORING and BEARING WITNESS to the UNITY lost at Babel." (Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church 431) The Catholic Church is NOT the "sole Church of Christ," but it is the sole Church of the Antichrist. It is gathering the religions of the world to embrace UNITY and peace. It seeks a "World Public Authority" (global Government) and is working with big business to remodal Capitalism in order for the "redistribution of wealth" to be made possible across the planet. As the Catholic Church seeks world peace, Jesus' words are a warning to this MISSION Rome desires: "Do NOT think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did NOT come to bring peace BUT a sword (i.e. DIVISION). For I have come to ‘set a man AGAINST his father, a daughter AGAINST her mother, and a daughter-in-law AGAINST her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s ENEMIES will be those of his own HOUSEHOLD" - Matthew 10:34-36

"See that you all follow the Bishop, as Christ does the Father, and the presbyterium as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as a command of God. Let no one do anything connected with the Church without the Bishop. Let that be considered a certain [βεβαια, "valid"] eucharist which is under the leadership of the Bishop, or one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the Bishop appears, there let the multitude of the people be; just as where Christ Jesus is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not permitted with the Bishop either to baptize or to celebrate an agape; but whatever he shall approve of, that is well-pleasing alos to God, so that everything that is done may be assured and certain. -St. Ignatius of Antioch, c. 110 AD, Letter to the Smyrneans 8

Okay Austin, it's like this. The priest does not have the power to pull Jesus into the bread. He has the power to invoke the Holy Spirit into the bread and wine. Jesus taught, "Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you will not have life in you." Fundo whackos who have torn everything out of the historical church and replaced it with arid scholasticism are not aware of this. It was the historical church which decided which books would go into the canon (order) of the bible so Protestants could later mess it up. In early times, Christians didn't go around with bibles under their armpits witnessing. There were few bibles, they were expensive and they weighed 70 pounds because they were printed on vellum (unborn calfskin). Jack Chick's products have been classified as hate literature and have nothing whatsoever to do with historical Christianity, but low Protestantism. As for Confirmation, the bishop pats the person on the cheek lightly, a reminded that the person may have to suffer for their faith--like reading one of those trailer trash tracts which have no basis in reality. You are not taking an oath to kill or incite mob violence---this is a lie.

Great job Austin! I come from a large Catholic family. My brother Ricky was converted to a seriously devout Anti Catholic by the internet. How I wish that I could get him to watch this! He won't, because he knows that I am so consumed by Bael, that I will fall for anything. What makes this difficult is, that we live together. We cannot discuss religion at all. It does spill over to politics, and every conspiracy theory that comes down the pike, oh yeah...and my Blessed Mother in my garden..(ha)! The way I see it...he is free to believe as he wishes...but so am I. I understand his rejection of my Blessed Mother and my Crucifix...and apparantly frogs...but I refuse to hide them! Thank you for such an entertaining and well thought out video. You are doing great work! ⚘️

But show him that you love him. That's the best thing you can do for him. Offer up Masses for him. Offer up your communion for him. The best thing you can do for your brother is to be the best Catholic you can be and to pray for him. Go to confession often and if you could get to Mass a few times during the week as well, that would be great. Pray the Rosary for your brother too. Misunderstandings? I read them when I was a Baptist and found them thoroughly disgusting and packed full of lies, and that was almost 60 years ago. Regarding confession, the early Christians confessed their sins before the entire congregation. Confessionals were an improvement. The Catholic Church uses the ancient Jewish understanding of memorializing, which makes the original event present in the present time. It isn't sacrificing Jesus all over again, it's a re-presentation of his sacrifice in an unbloody manner. The Jewish memorial of Passover is the same Passover of Moses.

Jesus says: “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink." (John 6 : 53-55 NIV) Then St. Paul tells us how to do this: "The Lord Jesus... took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, 'This is my body, which is for you... In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.' For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord." (1 Cor. 11 : 23-32 NIV) Pretty clear to me. Funny how Jack Chick (or any other Catholic basher) never refers to these passages in the Bible. It's almost like they are trying to hide something.

"Horrified" is precisely right. When I was in college (class of 1976), a neighbor approached me with an anti-Catholic tract his mother had given him. He'd been dating a Catholic girl and the mother wanted him to break it off. When he read the tract, he was appalled at the idea that his lovely girlfriend believed such horrible things. I read the tract and was, as you say, horrified that anyone would lie so egregiously about what the Roman Catholic Church teaches. I explained what was inaccurate about the tract and put the poor fellow's mind to rest. The sweet thing was that he was genuinely more concerned about his girlfriend's immortal soul than anything else.

When some Protestants witness true worship (sacrifice), involving rituals, the only conclusion they can come to is that some manner of devilry or witchcraft is afoot. Why? Because to the majority of Protestant denominations, worship takes the form of prayer. Is prayer important to a Catholic? Yes. But it is not worship. It is a lower form of communion. We have much higher requirements for worship. If your highest practices as a Protestant are the lowest form of devotion to a Catholic, you have to conclude that Catholics are doing something bad, because the only other explanation is that you are woefully inadequate in your 'worship' of the Lord. It is convicting. If you were open to accepting that, it's unlikely you would still be Protestant, so misrepresenting or willfully misunderstanding Catholicism is really the only remaining option to a Protestant in this position.

It's not knew but if you speak to a Catholic, you will find one even thread - We don't focus on debunking other Christian churches. Catholics focus on the Bible, the teachings and love but not on debunking other Faiths like we see other Faiths doing to us all the time. If you look at it from out view, it would seem that the other Christian faiths are scared that if their people entered a Catholic Church, they will feel like they are home - and those other Churches don't want that.

12:25 With how much Jack Chick has written, I don't doubt his honest zeal... but he _definitely_ didn't know what he was talking about. Like, on the page you're referring to, he claims that "In Egypt, the 'IHS' stood for their gods... Isis, Horus, and Seb". ... _Really?_ The _Ancient Egyptians,_ practicing _Ancient Egyptian polytheism,_ used the _Latin alphabet_ to create a symbol for three of their gods (one of whom was an important but not exactly central god of the earth and _none_ of whom are Amun or Atem [primordial creator dieties], Ra [all-important Sun god], or Osiris [god of the dead and father of Horus])? "Seb" being the *_incorrect_* pronunciation we used before further research revealed that the Egyptians actually called him _"Geb"?_ Even completely setting aside Christian history, theology, and politics, this just doesn't stand to _reason._ Now where on Earth did you get all _this,_ Jack? ... Oh, I see. _The Two Babylons_ by Alexander Hislop, a pamphlet based on pseudoarchaeological hypotheses and enough clunky folk etymologies to choke a horse. ("Easter = Ishtar!" Uh-huh. Sure.)

Particularly in his anti-Catholic tracts and comic books he relied on the book Two Babylons by Alexander Hislop and later he used the teachings of Alberto Rivera who claimed to be a former Jesuit priest but could never produce documentation to back up his claims. Even when confronted with the truth about Rivera, Chick never removed any of the tracts and comic books that featured Alberto's lies.

Interesting how Chick shows all this hatred and bigotry toward Catholics and other religions as well as other groups...yet he never bothers telling us which denominations (in his eyes) do it right. Just "a church where the (KJV) Bible is preached and is the final authority"...so why does he never give specific examples? I mean he said that Helen is going to hell even though (pre Vatican II especially) the Catholic Church insisted that it was the one true faith as it was founded by Jesus Himself and he appointed St Peter as the first pope. Honestly there is no such thing as a "one truth faith". That's the main thing I just cannot and will not with a clear conscience accept...that people would burn for eternity just because they didn't believe the right things or say the right magic words...not to mention how could someone be happy in heaven if they have loved ones in hell? I mean, the main overall message from Christ above all else is to help and be compassionate towards your fellow humans. But I guess after death we're supposed to be like Ivan Drago and be all like, "If they burn, they burn."?

13:18 You're right. We do not pull Jesus out of heaven to sacrifice Him again. For those who don't know, at every Mass, we re-enter Calvary. It's the re-presentation of the one sacrifice of Jesus in an unbloody manner. Jesus doesn’t die again in the Mass. But his once-for-all sacrifice is re-presented in an unbloody manner through the sacramental elements of bread and wine which become Jesus' true Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. For from the rising of the sun even to the going down, my name is great among the Gentiles, and in every place there is sacrifice, and there is offered to my name a clean oblation: for my name is great among the Gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts. -- Malachi 1 11 DR-V

I love to read them, but I don't know whether that's a GOOD thing. I don't know if it's an edifying spiritual practice. I think it's dividing to keep making dogmas about Mary. How does that unite all of Christendom?
@HighKingTurgon
@HighKingTurgon Жыл бұрын
@@Volleyball_Chess_and_Geoguessr If I may invite you to join me at a slight remove from the question, I would like to pose one of my own: what is dogma for? Why is it important to believe that Jesus is God? That's a dogma I assume you hold-but not all those who confess with their lips that Jesus is Lord do! Furthermore, why does a dogma become defined? Throughout church history, dogmata have become defined casually; i.e., they were settled to resolve disputes. There was a genuine and earnest question in the early church, not about Jesus' lordship, nor even his divinity, but his coequality with the Father. Arius proposed a solution to the apparent problem of the Trinity. The Church determined that Jesus' subordination to the Father could not cohere with the deposit of the faith. So, Mary. She's important to Catholics, of course. But I would argue this is a pretty logical consequence of the imitation of Christ-Mary was hugely important to Jesus both in his humanity (I love MY mother, y'know?) AND in his divinity (God has providentially known all things from time eternal, including the identity of this woman who would nurture his body in the most intimate way). If she's important to God, not necessarily MORE than others, but UNIQUELY and TYPICALLY important, I think we ought to pay attention. So theologians have speculated as to her role, her life, her place in salvation history. It is just as important that theology be conducted with minimal error as to Mary as to the rest of God's providential work. So it is a practice, I think, of unity. When disagreement arises, when two things that cannot be reconciled threaten division in the Church, I am glad that they have been adjudicated! I'm glad that Mary was preserved from sin but the same grace through the same sacrifice that offers me grace to this day! That's good news! I'm glad that her divine motherhood was proclaimed in the fifth century. That God has a mother in time is PROOF that he came, you know? That's my two cents. I hope I've engaged your question to your satisfaction. Peace to you!

@@HighKingTurgon So you have some thinking from the mind of man about Mary, but if she was so important, why is this oddly left out entirely from all of scripture? Seems like our minds, our philosophies, can sound right to a man, but not really be right.

@HighKingTurgon Жыл бұрын
@@Volleyball_Chess_and_Geoguessr It seems to me that the mind of man is God's gift per se and ought not to be despised! What better for the mind to do than contemplate his revelation? Now, I might be misreading you here, but it seems to me that you have a misconception of the immaculate conception which is both common and understandable: Mary's need for a savior. Of course she did! All Adam's children do! As the bull-Catholic for "official letter," which you probably already know-"Indescribable God" points out, it is precisely through the grace of the holy Spirit in light of the merits of Jesus' atoning sacrifice that Mary COULD have been preserved from original sin. How else could Moses, say, have been saved, if Jesus' sacrifice were not applicable across all space and time? Now, as to the claim that Mary's Immaculate Conception lacks scriptural warrant, I disagree! A common criticism, as I understand, of the Immaculate Conception is a scriptural suggestion that Jesus alone is without sin. I don't draw the same condition from the texts I see commonly cited here. That Jesus lived a sinless life is beyond contention, but that he alone lived a sinless life is a conclusion these texts cannot support. Furthermore, without even reading the allegorical texts in the first covenant (see the burning bush for my favorite!), Luke's Gospel gives us several warrants for Mary's preeminence. Elizabeth, whom Luke tells us is filled with the holy spirit as she says so, proclaims Mary "blessed among women." Now, she is certainly unique in her divine maternity, but when you recall that a few verses-and perhaps months?-earlier, God's own messenger has greeted her with a title that is used nowhere else. He addresses her with-and forgive the linguistic exegesis here; I love them ancient languages!-the Greek participle κεχαριτωμένη (keh-khar-ih-tow-MEH-ney, although some would dispute the vowel qualities!). The voice of the participle is (medio)passive, which means that Mary is the action's recipient. The verb itself, as far as we can tell, is χαριτόω, to bestow Grace upon (someone). The tense of the participle (it's perfect tense!) means that the bestowal of Grace has already happened by the time Gabriel greets Mary-before she becomes overshadowed by the spirit and says "let it be done." Luke suggests that before she takes on the identity of the Theotokos, she was already unique in her relationship to grace. This is consistent with her Immaculate Conception. Furthermore, the Church Fathers certainly suggest, if not outright state, Mary's sinlessness (a distinct but related matter) from as early as the second century (roughly contemporary with John's Gospel) through the early fourth, which certainly suggests the belief was widely held in the early Church. Since I have already taken a ton of your time, I'll leave be Mary's identity as the Second Eve, which I think is pretty compelling material in itself, because you didn't address it! As I say, I hope you're satisfied with my respect for Scripture; I'm no more interested in merely human precepts than I suspect you are!

@YAJUN YUAN I think you missed the point. Even if you are painting it right allegedly, the tract is obviously false. Catholics do not worship a “wafer-God” because the sacramental bread Protestants call a ‘wafer’ or a ‘cookie’ blasphemously is NOTHING but Jesus Christ’s glorified body (with no substance of bread whatsoever) sacramentally presented, only under the accidents that make for the appearance of bread. I am ready to give my life for that truth, just as St André de Soveral did in my country, when he was slaughtered during mass exactly after the consecration of the Most Blessed Sacrament by Dutch Calvinist invaders. I urge you cease to offend and profane the Catholic faith all around, for your own sake, if I am not misunderstanding you, brother. God bless your journey.
@masterchief8179
@masterchief8179 Жыл бұрын
@YAJUN YUAN As predictable, you are wrong again. And the reasons are quite clear for it: especially after so many acts of profanations spread throughout Europe during the Protestant revolutions, the dissemination of the monstrance and the practice of Eucharistic meditation was seen as a pious means to combat the public abhorrent offenses that took place and also to educate the faithful in a time when people were massively illiterate and uneducated, inspiring them to understand the doctrine through contemplative piety instead of a much complex theological reasoning. Albeit there are historical records of the Eucharistic meditation in monasteries during the Ancient Era in the East and the West, just like a high probability that St Ambrose himself used the Eucharist for extra-liturgical adoration in order to inspire the faithful to cease from mortal sinning, the first registered act of “perpetual adoration” using the Eucharist in a ostensory (monstrance) for uninterrupted devotion of the faithful in meditation according to the Catholic Encyclopedia (check for “perpetual adoration”) happened in France, 1226, to celebrate and give thanks for the victory over the Albigensians in the “Siege of Avignon”: as it is widely known, the Cathars (just like some versions of Protestantism later) denied the Real Presence and acts of profanation spread throughout all the Albigensian areas in France. But to say that there isn’t Eucharistic adoration in the East is utter ignorance. Besides, if some typically Western practices are rejected by the Greeks due to their necessity of provincialism (like priests shaving the beards, a practice which was traditionally called a “heresy” during the time of the Great Schism in 1054 by the arrogant Greeks), it is not equivalent to what you are falsely implying. A pretty small amount of theological and historical knowledge would do it for you, buddy.
