Hmm. I'm 70. This brings back some fond memories for me. Specifically, Viet nam in the late 60's early 70's. Tear gas, violent arrests, clubs, hand cuffs, cops out of control. I disagree in principle with the pro-Palestine demonstrators (I think their grasp of Middle Eastern history is weak tea), but I support 100% their right to protest this war. I've never been a fan of war. People get hurt. Killed even. In the end, not much is accomplished except for those who manufacture the weaponry. They do quite well. This plays into the hands of Hamas: this is exactly the kind of global backlash they envisioned against Israel, knowing as they did, that the attack on 10/7 would unleash the hounds. Israel is now viewed as the 'aggressor'.Hamas has always been willing to use the weak and vulnerable to advance their agenda. This is no different. I stand with Israel. Any university can designate a particular place "private", and can also designate a place a "public forum". The First Amendment does not continue to protect protests that escalate to violence or the destruction of private or public property. NY has various laws about encampments and such on public properties, mainly to stop homeless encampments from embarding around our children's school bus stops and such. HAVING CAMPS ON THE CAMPUS, IS A VIOLAITON OF THE RULE! The police are constitutionally sound in this regard, the protest is no longer non-violent nor free of valndalism when you start making camps out there.
