Guess What? It's Proto rebuild time. After standing on this thing it finally gave way to the pressure, so I guess I can't blame Stanley on this one. This is one of the easiest ratchet rebuilds i've ever done.

I've used the same Proto 5449 for almost 40 years, and I prefer its selector position to modern ratchets: Instead of the selector pointing in the direction of work-movement, it points "lefty-loosey / righty-tighty". Lol

I am glad I am not the only one with an old trusted tool sickness. They wouldn't even make these rebuild kits if it weren't for people like you and all of us with the same sickness...... awesome

These ratchets are actually available new in all sizes and lengths from Proto. They also have a 45 tooth "premium" ratchet, and they just released their first true fine (90) tooth a few months ago. If you are a fan of the trusty old tools your dad used Proto is a great American made brand.

Just subscribed, and only because I had a 1/4" ratchet without any brand markings or p/n or model number, nothing.... So I believe it's a Proto. This is based on looking for ratchet rebuild parts kit or a video. I found you working on what looks a lot like mine, except size. Mine has same works inside except a fine ratchet gear. Mine vibrated apart in my tool box while I was traveling in my truck. I found all the parts, but I had no idea how to put it together.... I followed you as you did this gear replacement... And had mine put back together shortly after your video, but I watched all the way through the first time, and then watched it again following along.... Then watched a 3rd time to leave a comment and a thumbs up! Thanks.....

Thanks for the great video my friend. I never paid attention to the selector on my Proto wratchet. I have taken it apart and cleaned it and lubed it. Mine is 3/4 drive heavy as heck but has been used and abused. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again

I like the old ratchets. That slim Craftsman is pretty sweet too. I like to use molybdenum grease in mine. Vaseline works well if its all you have.

Garnett-Tools So which do you prefer? Fine tooth feel nice but I like my older coarse ones. For tight spaces I have sprag roller type.

upside downdog Ive got one of those gearless ratchets, a Titan 3/8 stubby / mini. Those things are fun to use and occasionally a huge timesaver. Agree sometimes I like to use a 24 tooth, 30 tooth, 36 tooth in place of the usual 60, 72, 80, 88, and 90. Sometimes I feel like a half inch Cornwell 30 or Duralast 36.

I'm glad you posted this video. I've been considering buying that rebuild kit. It's actually for an Armstrong f91 ratchet. But looking at the rebuild kits they look very similar to the Proto. I can't find an Armstrong rebuild kit anywhere though so I was hoping this one would work. After watching the video it's obvious that this ratchet head is much bigger than the Armstrong. The Armstrong has more of a cylinder shaped cogwheel where this one's more like a disc. Anyone know where I can get an Armstrong f91 rebuild kit?
@Alangley345

Anthony Morency have you tried contacting Apex directly? It's possible they can still help you even if Armstrong is now discontinued.

Nice rebuild of that Proto ratchet. I just picked up one that was frozen. I was able to get it apart and it was frozen because the dog on the left had moved to far over to right and jammed the rachet up so it would work. The the ratcheting gear seams to be sloppy in the plates as if it is either warn to much or it is missing a washer. I noticed yours was tighter in hole and the selector switch was shaped better. Have you ever had this issue and how did you correct it?
@johnl5177
@johnl5177 2 жыл бұрын
yeah the selling point of a fine tooth ratchet is swing arc and stronger due to contact surface but the most common reason of failure is the screws get loose and then the gear becomes loose and are not fully meshed with the paw causing low surface area which the bigger teeth minimize this effect and worsen with the more teeth ratchets. this is why that design isn't preferable on fine tooth ratchets

This looks like a Proto ratchet. Proto (Professional Tools) will provide a rebuild kit AT NO CHARGE, so there is no reason to buy a rebuild kit unless one is in a hurry to fix the ratchet. Call them, provide the number off the ratchet, wait for the parts kit. I use Super Lube when rebuilding. I've done a couple of SK ratchets, two Proto's, and a Craftsman.....Craftsman was the hardest due to that little ball bearing moving out of position.

Great video. I've been looking at this ratchet and the tekton 24" 1/2" drive. Some people said the proto is not the smoothest due to the teeth count. I'd rather pay for something made in USA. What would you suggest?

I have a bunch of old ratchets, including a similar Proto one. It is one of my least favourite ratchets. The tooth count is low and the head is big enough to become an obstruction. Proto still seems to manufacture these old ratchet designs. They can be found on Amazon for $30-$40. I'm not even sure if these are worth rebuilding unless you've got a Proto dealer that will do it under warranty.

I need that switch, any chance I can buy it off of you? Golf clap for knowing the difference between a dog and a pawl. +1 I have the 5449, its a short handle, the 5450 is long handle, same ratchet. My switch doesn't clear the dog out on one side, unless you over twist it into the raised area, the rest is good i tried re-peining it, and it works better, but the clearance is still in the hundredths. My refurbish of the 3/4" version of this ratchet is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5-smq2faM2nhqc
