still super disappointed that a project with so much emphasis on taking back power and decentralization requires a registration and accredited investor status in order to invest.

2 years later and I still think about this. 3 things have to be considered: 1. Control - is it fully decentralized? 2. Storage cost - if it is fully decentralized, how do you prevent huge storage costs, such that 1MB of data does not require a manyfold of disk space? What happens when a memeber of the network is not reachable anymore? How do you prevent data loss and strengthen data integrity? 3. Speed - if storage of the file is truly decentralized, how do you make sure that the requested data can be quickly accessed, also in a large scaled network?
@patazertyui5 жыл бұрын
"More dissemination => more value / More control => less dissemination => less value" These are the basics of success for any open source project. No exception known to date. Will Filecoin be the first project to infringe this law? Wish you the best ;-)

@albertwillis15406 жыл бұрын
So what if you're not an accredited investor? 70% of all Filecoin goes to the "miners"-the folks that provide storage to the network. 4 TB drives are under $100-seems like a great opportunity as far as I’m concerned.
@jamshidsingh50206 жыл бұрын
Albert Willis it seems that too many people are desperate for a 'quick fix' to there problems. They cannot wait wait for it to filter through the free market... it may triumph, or it may fail. People need to look into diversifying their assets and skills as well as taking risks they can afford - although it seems that most people in this comment thread believe that they cannot manage. I'm not anywhere near being a millionaire, but I am hopeful that there we are only at the beginning of something great
@dharmeshsingh90506 жыл бұрын
if it uses the same mining concept as Bitcoin that is if they use up the same amount of power (very large) it would ultimately lead to concentration of data that we have right now. On the upper level it would look like it's decentralised but I think it will ultimately be centralised.

Not if these companies value their data. People use AWS just as much for stability as they do for price and availability. Sorry but not putting my data on some random second hand server with old refurbished disks simply because it is "decentralized". Buzz word.

@chadr82643 жыл бұрын
@@Kahoobb you must not understand networking infrastructure and ISP... The storage is not the issue of connectivity. If they really wanted to decentralize the internet they need to start way before the storage of data level. It's all about networking.
@Kahoobb3 жыл бұрын
@@chadr8264 I misread it. Yes the government could shut off internet but that means banks won't work and debit credit cards won't work. I thought they said that the government could stop filecoin when they can't due to its decentralization nature
@chadr82643 жыл бұрын
@@Kahoobb No worries. And I'm not trying to be combative here. But even that really isn't the case. EVERYTHING essentially is IP addresses and subnets. Everything. Governments and other "powers that be" can simply reroute traffic. It isn't that hard to keep infrastructure afloat while taking down other things. So i'm just simply saying storage isn't the reason Egypt went down. I wish this project luck, but I don't buy it.
@Kahoobb3 жыл бұрын
@@chadr8264 You should research more about decentralization and TOR network. Because the only way bitcoin can be stopped is if the government turned off the whole internet for everyone.

I want a youtube alternative that honours free speech but still adheres to the laws of the land. One major stumbling block is in video storage and bandwidth consumption of those videos - it's damn expensive. I hope filecoin / IPFS can reduce the costs of that and disrupt the monopoly of the woke billionaires that are trying to silence humanity.

You are a very clever team, bravo. But this project is just bullcrypt. Feathercoin to litecoin is filecoin to sia. The only difference is that the feathercoin developers didn't milk the rich "accredited investors". That's why you are so clever. That's also why we cant have nice things.
