My personal theory regarding fairies goes to popular lore. Fairies are often portrayed as highly mischievous creatures, who's greatest assets are their small size and quick movement. They are disarmingly cute and misunderstood, as current fairy types are. Take this to their strengths against dragons. Dragons are mighty in size and strength, and their usual downfall is that their great pride makes them over look those that they consider to be weaker. Since a dragon would normally pay no mind to an insignificant fairy, the fairy would use their mischief to find a dragons weakest point. The dragon, not expecting it, would be dumbfounded to any way to combat so small a creature(hence the fairies immunity). As to their weaknesses, most fairies find themselves most vulnerable to the realism of an everyday world, making poison and steel, two of the most grimly "real" types, their greatest weakness.
@cynthiasitri9 жыл бұрын
The weakness to steel type comes from the aspect of fairies being weak to "cold iron", that iron either drained their magic or actually was toxic to them.
@soulzer19129 жыл бұрын
+Dakota Dicks Dragons may be old and wise but they're extremely prideful. So even if they learn from a mistake their pride won't allow them to show it because doing so would show proof that they made a mistake and know that they made a mistake. P.S. shutup cartman.
@zinzolin149 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Orona I really like your explanation, though its been rephrased everywhere on the internet, I'm always amazed by how different people interpret the Fairy-type. Adding to the idea of fairies being weak to the "real" types, I think overall the Fairy-type is a type that represent fantasies, dreams, goodness, and in a different way than Psychic, magic. This could add to the theme that all Fairy Pokémon represent in their designs and purpose in the game.

The reason Fairy type is immune to and super effective against Dragon types is, in all honestly, purely for gameplay balancing reasons. Dragons were absurdly overpowered in the previous generations. Lore-wise, dragons were sometimes described as being highly susceptible to magic. Fairy types are weak to Steel because in almost all sources of mythology about fairies, they are weakened and killed by iron -- it's like fairie kryptonite. (Remember how Captain Hook kept Tinkerbell imprisoned in what seems to be a cast-iron lantern?) Fairy types aren't very effective against Fire because they are guardians of nature, with their magic being derived from said nature -- Fire is a destructive force, but it is a completely natural destructive force, so they are just as powerless in stopping it as anything else. Poison type is good against Fairy because, in the Pokemon world, Poison types are very often representative of pollution -- you know, that stuff that *destroys nature.* (For the non-pollution-based Poison types, you could use the previous point about Fire and argue that a creature's natural venom is, well, natural). Fairy being good against Dark is just typical "good" magic > "bad" magic/malicious intent. The rest is kind of just because, really. Bug types aren't good against Fairy because fairies are protectors of the environments bugs live in, I guess? No clue about Fighting, although I guess Fighting represents mankind maybe...? (Plus I doubt you'd be able to just beat up a fairy...)

But aren't Dragons dead at the end of fairy tales? And Tinker Bell was trapped in a iron cast... But wouldn't be trapped in a golden cast, makes h r still IN the cast, due to her small height? Captain Hook could've trapped Tinker Bell in a obsidian, diamond, etc. Also, your example about Tinker Bell contradicts what you said, as you said that fairies are killed by iron, but in no way did Tinker Bell get killed or get hurt by the iron. She got hurt BECAUSE he hit her with a sword (I think, it's been 7 years since I saw the film). In Poison, I completely agree with you, but isn't pollution a source that gets defeated in some fairy tales? I mean, if by pollution you mean actual humans. Humans are some kind of POLLUTION, as they cut trees AND create buildings in it. Some animals have gotten EXTINCT or CLOSE to extinction because of humans. Fire isn't necessarily a naturally made force. I've seen fire, since I like to create new things, and people are the perpetrators from some fires.

The reason why fairy types are strong against dragon types is cause in myths and legends it's usually through magical assistance a dragon can be slain. Only an enchanted weapon is able to get through the scales and magic shields can prevent being touched by the dragons flames.

My friend and I came up with a good theory. Dragon types are Pokemon that exert extreme energy and are almost unstoppable. It isn't the power of Dragon, but power that's overpowered. Fairies are the opposite. They are the lack of energy. They blast the lack of energy (kinda like black holes) if that makes any sense. They are immune to dragons because all of that energy is just absorbed. And when they use their lack of energy, or energy that absorbs all energy, dragons lose all of the energy they used, making the attack super effective.

The fact that they're weak to steel in Pokemon is actually really telling of where the inspiration for the typing as a whole came from. Celtic legends describe them often as being incredibly beautiful, and have tremendous power, but more often than not in many stories they're described as tricksters, or make cruel bargains with humans simply because they could. (Seriously look up some of that shit, its ridiculous) It usually came down to power, or love. Someones wife was dead and they needed the fairy to revive them, or someone unimportant wanted to be recognised (blah blah blah, you get the idea) so they made a deal with the fairy who would grant their wish, but usually at a price. Bearing in mind that those are just the "nice" fairies, some of them were straight up messed in the brain. Anyway, the typing thing. Fairies in the stories would often send mortals on a quest to kill things like Dragons purely for amusement sake. Like it was just the sort of mythological food chain Mortal

Fairies have a complex history. It's actually a really good type because it taps into both Eastern and Western lore. The modern word "fairy" derives from Early Modern English "faërie" (cf. Edmund Spenser's "The Faërie Queen"). However, "faërie" refers to a place -- the realm of its denizens, the fae. The word "fae" gives us the modern English adjectives "fay" and "fey" -- think about that the next time you watch Tina Fey perform! -- and it was also a synonym for "elf". While a lot of people might think of elves in the Tolkien sense, in traditional Germanic lore, elves are actually impish tricksters. Rowling's house-elves are another realization of fokelore elves, as is Terry Pratchett's very dark interpretation of elves (read "Lords and Ladies" when you get a chance; if you're really interested, Pratchett also published, just before his death, a rather thick book detailing the source material for elements he incorporated into the Discworld). Oberon and Titania in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's Night's Dream" are also elves; another legend especially in writing lore is that he wrote the play specifically to appease them -- Neil Gaiman once wrote a Sandman story based around this legend. In Romance lore, fairies and elves are also extensions of the ancient Roman concept of the lars, that is, a god of the place. This is a truly ancient concept and one that is found both in every Indo-European mythology (Greek, Roman, Celtic, Germanic/Norse, Slavic, Persian, Hindu) and in Shinto, as well as a broad set of other sources -- such as most Native American mythologies. The idea is that every place, every river and meadow and clearing and village and homestead and, well, everything you can point to on a map, really, has its own spirit associated with it. It makes an appearance in the Iliad, the oldest work in the entire Western tradition, where the very god of the river Scamander opposes Achilles. It is, in short, a concept that was already old when civilization was new. However, at this point, we can see the linkage with demons. (And with genies! The word "djinn" is derived from the Persian word for "spirit", which is cognate with Sanskrit for"god" and the English word "divine" -- yep). This is because spirits of place include a wide variety of spirits known as "nature spirits" -- fauns, satyrs, nymphs, that sort of thing. These were co-opted by very early Christianity as "demons" -- this is why conceptions of Satan through the ages are strikingly similar to Pan, an ancient Greek nature god: both are developed from the faun, a nature spirit that was half man and half goat. Many other demons followed this mold. This also means that a Pokémon based on Beelzebub (literally: "Lord of the Flies") can be every bit as Fairy-type as one based on, say, Ganga (goddess of the Ganges in Hindu tradition) or Amaterasu (a major deity in Shinto) ... as well as literally thousands of other applications. It also implies there are some deep in-universe interlinkages between the Fairy, Psychic, Dark, and Ghost types. But, ultimately, it does not tell us at all about why the Dragon type can't affect the Fairy type at all.

Faires apparently also stole babies. But, when you look at the family's state, abuse was almost always guaranteed in the future, or the single parent ( either cause the grandparents of the child stolen by fairies had the other parent killed due to not approving, or simply banned them from seeing the one that they had the child with) would not be able to provide for them without said parent ending up dead from giving most of the food to the child. So, in a way, the faires would prevent these futures for babies..... But, they did replace the baby with changlings.... Maybe it was to help them life among humans by being introduced in a way that wouldn't have them killed?

Actually "fairies" were first called, "the fae" they existed in celtic myths as mischievous creatures. They came in all sorts of sizes but my fave are the ones people often call, "elves" they' have long hair pointy ears and are tall and are very beautiful, they're not elves though they were called, the fae first hand. These creatures motivations are some what based on where they are. In irish mythology they were more hardcore. Taking babies and replacing them with changelings using spirits and the faces of the dead to fool people and so forth. The welsh believed they were more beinin and weird. Like showing you to a loved one before they died at night kinda in a sleepwalking form. They did turn somewhat demonic when christianity came to their shores.
@dylstarling86496 жыл бұрын
The words fairy and fay come from an old French word fee, which is a woman who can use magic, the word was adopted by the English and eventually was used to refer to all things magical or enchanted. Most of the beings referred to as fairies in modern times have routes in Gaelic and Scandinavian mythologies, elves and gnomes being examples from Scandinavia, but in Gaelic mythology there are beings known as the Sídhe (shee) in Ireland or Sith in Scotland, which is an inclusive group of different monsters and gods. Christianity did pretty much demonise all of them though!

This is what I think Fairies are weak to steel because they are trapped in jars or in some type of steel casing to prevent them from flying out and their magic is seemingly useless against escaping it Poison not exactly sure about this one but I think you could trick a fairy into eating poisoned food, and since most are considered to be very tiny little flying creatures, a little bit of poison could easily kill it. Also if they are like one with nature then they would eventually consume polluted water They can ultimately fly away from the dragon, if they are considered very small like birds in fairy tales then a dragon couldn't even touch it in the air, like a mosquito as the fairy tricks it and easily kills it Fairies are smart in my opinion. Very mischeavous and tricksters I think people should think of fairies as flying types a bit, but very small which is why they are good against dragons. Fairies are good for the most part, and they usually fly so that's why they are better against fighting types. Fairies really are just smart enough to outsmart a dragon, and a fighter or even trick them. Dark, well in general fiaries are considered good and dark is considered bad, or evil They are also like light, which would completely light up the darkness

+TraciPeteyforlife Yeah the fair folk were originally I think based off of legends of a Celtic traveling tribe called the Tuatha De Dannu, the people of the goddess Dannu. It's just a harmless pagan traditional folk belief labeled evil by Christians in medieval Europe.
@kevins.41859 жыл бұрын
Rachael Lefler The Fae have deep roots in Europe in general, mostly Scotland, Ireland, and England (Where as I understand it the Celts had several tribes though not 100%) so they probably started with the celts and traveled around Europe. I would remember hearing them not being labeled evil but strange creatures that should be avoided like a dangerous animal.

I know that in Ireland, faeries were seen as extremely powerful magickal entities who could be good or bad, and the reason they called them the good folk was to appease them since they feared their power, and in stories, faeries were known to play tricks on humans or even be malicious. I know in Japanese stories (and I'm pretty sure even irl), there are 3 different types of youkai, which are basically spirits and supernatural beings. There's one kind that is a prankster and will do something silly like if someone sleeps outside in a forest, they will steal their clothes. There's another kind that's malicious and will try to attack people. There's one other kind that has converted to Buddhism and will try to get others to become Buddhists as well. Anyways, I think in the Pokémon world, the Fairy type is not evil. Note how one of the types they're strong agaist is Dark type. I think just like how it's theorized how Fighting types are strong against Dark types because Fighting represents fighting honourably, while Dark represents fighting dirty, I think Fairy type represents the light that can overcome the Darkness, and as for their advantage against Fighting and Dragon, faeries in folklore have been known to either lend their powers to help people fight enemies much stronger than them (like in Sleeping Beauty, or like how the Lady of the Lake gave King Arthur Excalibur), or they themselves can defeat much stronger enemies through magick and cleverness. Although why one holy type would be strong against another holy type (I know at the very least, Dragonite is considered holy in the Pokémon world) is beyond me.

You didn't even mention that the term fairy came from the blanket term faerie that could refer to almost any mythical or magical creature. For example trolls and gnomes are considered faerie folk.

That is a good try at theorizing, but I have a different idea. Supernatural beings don't all fit into the pigeonholes of good angels and bad demons. That duality is too simplistic. Fairies may have fallen from heaven, but they are not really affiliated with Satan. Fairies mainly have a Pagan origin. The original ones were large and powerful, which is very different from the familiar Victorian Tinker Bell image. Fairies could be nice and helpful, or they could be mischievous and spiteful. It depends on the individual fairy and how well they are treated. Fairies are strongly associated with spirits and nature. Here is how I rationalize the fairy type in Pokemon. Fairies use magic, which can alter physical things. The fighting type mainly deals with physical blows. It is ineffective and therefore weak against the supernatural fairy and psychic types. Fairies are a force of good. In the fairy tales their is a triumph of good over evil. So fairies are strong against types associated with evil. Since dark is considered to be evil, it is weak against fairy. It is also weak against fighting, which can be associated goodness and heroism. In fairy tails a major kind of evildoer is a dragon. The dragon eventually gets killed by the good guys. That is why the fairy type is immune and strong against the dragon type. I like to call fairy type Pokemon dragon-slayers. Fairies have a strong association with nature, so they can be harmed by things that harm nature. So they are weak against poison and steel. Poison harms the environment by polluting it. Steel harms the environment by cutting down plant life and making areas barren. In folklore iron was even used to ward off fairies. An easy way for me to remember fairy weaknesses is to recall the Fern Gulley Movie. It had fairies in a rain-forest, and they were threatened by the poisons and metals of human encroachment. When I prepared for the fairy type gym leader in Pokemon Y, I trained the poison type Scolipede. As I did this, I even sang the song, "Toxic Love".

God, I hate how Pokemon has evolved. why make a key chain Pokemon WHY?! it's because of that reason why I hate new Pokemon games, and all the games are exactly the same. they could have went back to previous regions and made brand new adventures SMH

honestly I think ya'll don't really get how they come up with the ideas and just want to bitch about the design :/. Klefki is a fairy type and is based on keys. In different cultures missing car or house keys are attributed to fairies playing tricks on humans by taking their keys and putting them somewhere else. It makes sense. Comfey is an alolan pokemon, and is based off of/ is a living hawaiian Lei. also Geodude was a rock krabby was a crab shellder is a shell and various other pokemon are either inanimate objects or animals. To start complaining about something that's been prevalent since Gen 1 is stupid lol

It actually made perfect sense for me that Clafairy is a fairy type alien pokemon, since there is an idea about how alien sightings are similar to past fairy sighting (i.e. flying, blinding lights, strange creatures seen, etc.) and how aliens are just a new kind of fairy

So glad to have someone ask this about Fairy-type Pokemon. The eyes of Sylveon aren't exactly normal, either. Plus, it has those ribbon feelers that are like retractable and extendable tentacles. We also have Spritzee and its terrible evolution Aromatisse. I still like Mawile and Granbull, though.

Fairy are by definition just any being with magic powers. Not just tiny humans with wings. Tinker bell? Fairy. Nymphs? Fairies. Mermaids? Fairies. Witches? Basically fairies. I guess demons could be considered fairies.

I have a question about Pokemon! What is your opinion on a Pokemon Origins 2, one that will cover Pokemon Gold and Silver?
@EssiBrownlee8 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed your video and my inner mythology nut came out, so I hope you don't mind the ramble! I am really glad you looked into the darker side of fairy types and the lore behind them because it's honestly one of the most fun parts of fairies in mythology too! From beings like the People of Danu (Tuatha De Dannan) in Ireland to the creatures like Kelpies and Will-O'-The-Wisps, fairy lore is rich with beings of good, tricky, and flat out evil. Its good to see someone highlight that darker side, where everyone seems to focus on the cuteness and light. Faries, fair folk, little people, and fae folk are a type of mythological group. Most people when they think Fairy are thinking Sidhe (pronounced "shee") are Irish, or the Persian Peri, which are often portrayed as fallen angels, though generally light. There is a dark side of fairy lore, and it's not all cute and happy, though some of it is! My dream is to see a fairy dark type based on the cu sith or black dog

Fairies have demon written all over them in the games. A good example is the little fairy girls. They seem possessed almost each time you encounter them and you only find them around areas associated with ghosts and hauntings. By looking at their eyes you can quickly notice they're normal human eyes. They lack any pupils, they glisten constantly, even seeming to have heart-shaped designs.. There's a few that you battle in the games with creepy lines. One of them when encountered says, " My dear cuties whisper all kinds of secrets to me..." and when defeated, "Tee hee hee hee! I can hear them! The fairies are whispering to me... "Fight!" "Win!" That's what they say! Hee hee hee..." creepy right? How about the one that says "Oh phooey! Don't you ever come back. If you do, we're gonna end you, mmkay?" or "Shhh. Rest now and close your eyes... You won't ever need open them again..." demons I tell ya, that's even one that straight up says she's old enough to be your mother.. That's creepy all in itself! Another says that he mother dresses just like her? Maybe these fairy tale girls are just little people with mental issues.. Or perhaps actually evil.. To top off all the creepiness, there's even the gym that's dedicated to a creepy doll house full of more fairy tale girls.. Being a pokemon master isn't worth a creepy doll house for a badge lol

klefki is based of the fact fairies were blamed for steeling objects, like keys, so i think that's why kelfki is a fairy key chain. steel, because keys are normally made out of metal.
@13KuriMaster9 жыл бұрын
Perhaps different fairys have different origins, after all, just because one may a daemon doesn't mean all of them have demonic origins. Good video btw. :)
@WyrdFayth8 жыл бұрын
Klefki doesn't actually include the keys by default. As shown in the anime, Klefki's body is the little lock face and bits above and below it, and the loop is two arms that can join together. The keys are literal inanimate keys that it picks up and holds onto.

I think it makes more sense to follow through on the space based nature of some Fairy Pokémon and say that they are Celestial Beings. They can still gain their power from the “heavens,” though that would be just a euphemism for cosmic rays and space dust, really.

It wouldn't make sense for them to be spirits or demons(evil) because wouldn't they be ghost and or dark types if they were spirits or demons?The reason I said dark is because in the Japanese version it's called evil type. If so than the category "fairy type" would be pointless.
@nicky781939 жыл бұрын
+ProtoMario Fairy Types beat dragon types dark types and fighting types for one reason... "Fairy Tales" in fairy tales dragons are considered "bad guys" and in the end there is mostly a happy ending. There is a reason for the fighting types but I can remember right now. They beat Dark types because the darkness must go away in fairy tales. So again there is a happy ending. They are weak to poison because in legends when fairies are exposed to poison bad things happen. Such as no flight and disintegration. Steel is strong against fairies because in ancient myths they are weak to iron and steel so it makes sense. And that is the fairy type
@ceulgai28178 жыл бұрын
I personally think "Fairy" is being used as a more accessible term for fae, a mythological taxonomic classification that includes fairies, faeries, pixies, but also leprechauns, redcaps, elves, and- under certain definitions- goblins.
@mahius199 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I kinda hate how Disney and the like have twisted the concept of fairies. I've been reading some novels recently, one of which is a realistic take on magic, the supernatural and folklore. They actually reference things in real life folk-lore like fairies. Fairies from real-life folklore are messed up, they are nothing like little people with wings that grant wishes, they are said to be mischevious little monsters. They would play pranks on people, steal memories and would kill people for the laughs, but not out of malice. There was also the myth of changelings, specifically in Ireland/Wales sort of area. The fairies would kidnap children and replace them with a lookalike fairy called a changeling. Real fairies: not suitable for kids.

I've always viewed the fairy type as the fae. Dark or light beings that are magical in nature, but seem rather uncaring, or even evil in regards to the human world.
@Normal_user_coniven6 жыл бұрын
Fairy attacks are super effective on dark and dragon type pokemons because they are evil, so they mostly destroyed by angels (fairies).

The same as Fighting-type Attacks on Dark-type pokemons, because they're presenting the heros' attacks, like the legend of zelda.
@fetzjorgensen6019 жыл бұрын
You want to look at the Celtic and Irish mythologies. Don't bother with Christian mythos, they got to twist everything into their Angel/Demon dichotomy. Of course by the time I posted this, you probably already have. They weren't/aren't necessarily evil, but very mischievous. Sure some of them run off with children and there are some legit evil fucking fairies like the Red Cap, but for the most part they act like the Greek nymphs. And that is super simplifying things. Also look into the World of Darkness series of table top games, specifically Changeling which is all about the Fey and their courts and the Hedge thee extra dimensional pocket they were forced into when humanity out numbered them. They change up some things here and there to make a more cohesive narrative for their setting and to make things tidier for game mechanics, but for the most part are spot on and they list their sources too.

Fetz Jorgensen They are spread out throughout the 9 realms. The Tomte is a nice example of an Norse elf (I kept calling everything in Europe faeries but mainlanders call them elves/Elfen/Feeen. It kinda gets more confusing as you go lol)

Klefki is based off the idea of little people/borrowers/fairies who steal small objects (and subsequently how when some people lose something they blame it on the little people.)
