I fail to understand why people think Windows sucks. I have Win 10 and 11 computers, they are both stable as a rock. I use them for web development, sound recording, browsing and some video. I never get crashes, I keep them maintained and I have no problem with them. I also use Proton products, mail, VPN and drive, and have no problem with them either

As a Proton fan, I still need a cross device sync, not the current folder-separated computer backup method. So far, the client has no use for me. Since ChromeOS and Android are my main OS, I'm at least quite happy with the offline folder function, that works on both systems. The offline folder remains encrypted, as far as I understand, which is one more plus.

I think that the "Computers" folder on the web app is for custom folders synced via the "Backup" feature, stored separately from files you directly save to Proton Drive's own "My Files" directory it created on the PC. And I think this is a good way to handle things. It's less confusing & less messy than just dumping all the backed up "Downloads" and "Documents" folders from various PCs into the main folder. So files will still be synced, but best way to do it is to create a folder structure within Proton's own "My Files" folder instead of just saving to the folders backed up using Proton Drive's "Back up" feature mainly intended for backups.

I use Sync. The interface and syncing can use improvement, but it's private, generous with space, stable, and the customer service is good.

I never left, just had to slow down my publishing schedule. Hard to work a full time job and keep TNO running day-to-day and also make videos.

Just a thought on the lack of Linux support. Given how Proton's struggling to simultaneously roll out new features consistently on all supported platforms it's no surprise that they tend to prioritize one platform over another and fall behind on some of them. And also, as you said, Proton's mission is giving an alternative to big tech's walled gardens for the broad public, so they're trying to reach them on the platforms that the broad public use the most, which is not Linux, unfortunately. It all makes sense in this paradigm. Yeah, it doesn't appeal to many privacy conscious folks, which is understandable, but they're not the target audience. They are the audience that Proton probably wants its target audience to become one day lol.

I understand that, but as I said in the video it feels like if they don't give enough attention to other platforms then they're creating a roadblock to people switching to those platforms - like Linux. I appreciate Proton trying to reach and onboard new audiences, but I would like to see them enable people to progress along their privacy journeys rather than tacitly forcing them to stay put.

Not syncing across computers and no Linux client are deal breakers for me personally. I still have one computer on Windows for gaming and apps that aren't on Linux. I would want to be able to back up files such as music across all my computers. Their VPN client on Linux is awful and does not support wireguard. It's this reason I'm considering another service such as Mullvad.

I use Google Drive because it's cheap and affordable. You're able to receive 4x the drive storage that you would Proton Drive with Google and as long as you're not uploading suspicious things you should be okay.

What's your general setup? What apps, software and hardware do you use in general?
@TheNewOil

I mean, that's a very broad question. In general I use a Qubes device with Windows for gaming and production. I use Signal, Nextcloud, and ProtonMail a lot. I cycle through various other tools either for testing or for specific use-cases. I also spend too much time on Mastodon and Matrix.

I use Google Drive, but I don't like it. It seems very user hostile, especially with it hiding the file sizes of folders. I prefer OneDrive, but because I pay for Google One for Google Photos, I am using Google Drive. I tried Proton Drive, but the UX just doesn't feel right to me, but I do envy people who use it as I wish I could jump ship.

And that's why I provided a timestamp so you can skip those bits.
@StiekemeHenk
@StiekemeHenk Жыл бұрын
That's true but a movie that lets you skip the boring parts doesn't make it a good movie. As I said, it feels like half of the video is just filler of some form instead of some in-depth look and thoughts about Proton Drive. You kinda were beating around the bush and going on a tangent imo. @@TheNewOil

@@StiekemeHenkFair. When I originally shot the video, I was still dealing with a number of people who were arguing that Proton Drive for Windows was dumb because Windows can't be made private, so I felt the need to address those concerns. This video took forever to release, it was recorded the same week Drive for Windows dropped so some of the things said may be a bit dated.

This usually feels like that when the title doesn't represent the contents of the video. And my problem is usually with the title, like i wouldn't have this problem if the title would be like "Why Windows isn't bad for privacy friendly software: Thoughts on Proton Drive Windows App". That would justify the half the video rant.

Seriously. Too bad he didn't explicitly say at the beginning of the video "here's a timestamp so you can skip straight to it." At that point it's on you if you decided to watch the whole thing. You literally knew exactly how long it would take and where to skip to.
