SC2 is a game of constant reworking. After I finish all the achievements in the game, I will go back to SC1: the game that doesn't need reworking :) I think the difference between the two games had to do partially with the time of release (a time when games were balanced overtime, versus a time when balances happened via expansions and sequels). I would like to see the kind of video you suggested though. In a way, it would be a history of SC2 through the lens of balance patches.

They are bad for the health of the game as it discourages players from making certain units as to not feed the soul hunters. It's the same reason why they removed the replicator and never added dark archons back, except for small units instead of big ones.

@@Anomen77 That's true, but also I think not inherently a problem in principle if they were handled with balance in mind, in much the same way that someone building colossus discourages players from making zerglings. It's also a really hard unit to balance since the buff doesn't just affect its power in one fight, it affects all future fights. Too strong and it'll snowball out of control, too weak and it'll never survive to make use of it. It's a "win more" unit. Maybe you could make it a temporary buff that expires after a while, so you're encouraged to keep pushing once you've made some kills but it doesn't affect the whole game.

It is also worth noting that the mothership core had 2 versions throughout its history. The Alpha version was shown in this video. It's what looked like a stripped-down version of the mothership. This version was attached to the nexus. It couldn't move freely, but could teleport to another nexus you control. If casting mass recall would teleport your units to the nexus with the mothership core. And photon overcharge would cause the nexus with the mothership core attached to it to attack. The second version that made it into the live game when HOTS launched was the ball shaped one. It was independent from the nexus. Able to move freely. Recall was an ability that could be cast on a nexus that would teleport the core and every nearby unit to that nexus. Overcharge was cast on the nexus to give it an attack.

I bought SC2 from Best Buy back in the Beta with my last $50 after totally burning out getting Obama elected. I never made higher than Silver before i concluded I was too old and too ADHD-addled (on my system and in the apartment we were in at the time) to train my APMs to above 100 while also playing non-stupidly. Many friends went back to WoW and I moved on to CoD and Planetside where I got to feel a little less “old man brain can’t handle” and a little more pro. The micro and menu diving of LoL/DoTA just made my brain hurt and left me feeling like dead weight. The RTS part of my life went behind the shed to die quietly around 2013. But your videos are really bringing back how vibrant an experience competitive SC2 was, easily rivaling anything MtG delivered for way, way less money and from the comfort of home. It’s proving to be a great way to share with my son what it’s like to live in a metagame and try your best within that dynamic. Here’s to hoping we get another competitive RTS game that inspires this level of excitement and athleticism someday.

Maybe I be a Brood War enthusiast, but I prefer the Reavers over Disruptors. Even they are slow and need a warp prism/shuttle to better move, It can be excelent in some battles and damaging key constructions. Besides, Disruptors need an eternity to recharge and are easily destroyed after one shot. If they shot a second time, probably the oponent dont target him and the battle is long.
@Leonhart_93
@Leonhart_93 Жыл бұрын
Reavers are way stronger. Like WAY stronger. Disruptor fires a slow, easy to dodge shot every 21 seconds. Reavers fire way faster and it's basically guaranteed to hit. Even if they are slower, they are the kings of anti-ground. In BW it was balanced through the fact that stuff didn't clump up as much any it was annoying to buy ammo, but the SC2 versions don't have those problems.

As a fellow brood war enjoyer i agree, but in my opinion Colossi do sieging and splash damaging in a much more fun to use and fun to fight way than either of them. Having your entire army/ mineral line vaporized in an instant to a disruptor shot or a scarab has a lot less counterplay than being beamed by a colossus a few times. I think using colossus in place of reavers was a good decision for the nature of sc2 but i also think disruptors should've never been added.

I wish the power increasing with kill count mechanic made it into the game. Seems thematically appropriate for the mothership, even if it's little impractical to use it as a combat unit. Not like an increase over time to its basic attack will flip balance on its head or anything anyway.

What would make Protoss more playable? What if they got some sort of spell like the queen but instead of spawn larva it gave existing mineral patches more total minerals (regrowing used or close to depleted patches bringing them back slowly up to the original amount). It would favor late game builds, so probably slow down the game. They could have a stationary building that is a mix between a bunker and a medevac. It could protect a few units lowering there damage because they are being healed but they would regain health as fast as Zerg, so slowly (maybe 2x Zerg normal heal speed). This would work for mechanical and flying too. They could have a merge like archons for zealots that gives them more health, reflective damage shields (meaning if they are hit by projectiles it also damages the enemies a small amount), but instead of attacking they have a passive area of effect slowing and a small damage over time effect (like a poison, maybe stackable) just being close to enemies. For the sentry revamp the force field, make it damage somehow, maybe make it similar to the auto turret or the removed infested Terran, possibly let your own units enter the field making them like bunkers. Or make it be able to capture enemy units like stasis ward. I feel like Protoss should have a damage, shield energy, and or spell energy increase if they are within the power effect of pylons (maybe choose one and make it a temporary triggered ability/spell). Giving their energy based weapons and shields an additional +1 +0 +1 (up to total +4) (regular armor would be uninfected). Possibly give gateways a reactor like attachment or upgrade, that allows for you to create certain units like a normal gateways (only spawn at the gateway) + continue to allow the regular amount of warp ins.

Mothership core should have stayed but got reworked to be more damaging in the early game (like a floating photon cannon) and then a utility in the mid-late game with something like a vision ward (not detector) to watch for flanks and it's mass recall for quick repositioning of what is otherwise a slow deathball.

@@Appletank8 the liberator when introduced in 4.0 was absolutely an a2a monster, so much so that you needed like, 4 as a2a and then the rest would be the vanguard for your siegetank's sternguard, meaning if you werent terran there was literally nothing in the game that could even fight you because nothing could survive in the air, and the ground was having to face siegetank Liberator. If you didnt have Thors, you had no choice but to die. And if you could have Thors, you could have Liberator Tank, which beat everything except Thors decisively, and obliterated Thors.
@Appletank8
@Appletank8 Жыл бұрын
@@F14thunderhawk Oh yeah at launch it was nuts. I'm honestly baffled how they misunderstood the relationship Valks and Corsairs had against light fighters vs capital ships and didn't see it coming. Those two units were allowed to be really strong against air units when massed precisely because fighting grounded stuff was way more important, and spending all that money into something that can only shoot up can easily backfire (surprise! Lurkers). And even then their rapid fire nature made them really bad against armor, so they still had airborne weaknesses if you really wanted to combat them with air units. Them giving the Liberator a powerful A2G weapon on top of normal damage A2A made it too good at almost everything, instead of having to choose. Now it's been nerfed into an A2G unit, resulting in Vikings once again having to be Terran's only mobile AA option.

Played Zerg and Protoss at diamond level when LoTV first came out personally I miss Mothership core, it actually made facing off against protoss (at least as those 2 races) a lot more interesting as you'd see protoss be more aggressive in the early game rather than trying to get really solid trades to try to get into the mid game. If you managed to catch is in the early game you knew they would be forced to play safe and that meant you could go aggressive and with LoTV making it so easy to skip tier 1 tech (zealot stalker, ling roach baneling) I would usually just rush into Phoenix or Mutalisk hit their mineral line then hunt down the ball. Between the workers, mothership core and forced photon cannons at the mineral line it usually made it worth it even if I lost a few phoenix or mutalisk to stalkers taking the thing out.

The number of games I saw where mothership cores did what they needed to do and Protoss still was losing consistently, meant that a quick and immediate change elsewhere needed to happen instead of just a quick removal. But I was away from SCII since maybe late 2012 to 2013. I still played around a bit, but didn't like the direction the game was going... Heart was a genuine disappointment for me and essentially cut most of my ties apart from watching here and there to SCII.

Protoss is just not as fun to play in SC2 as they were in BW. They're definitely a lot _smoother_ to play in SC2, that's for sure, but this came at the sacrifice of personality. All we _really_ wanted was Protoss with pathing that didn't make you want to throw your keyboard through your monitor, and then both through the nearest fucking window anytime you tried to get a dragoon to move up stairs, or a ramp, or in the general cardinal direction you clicked on. But even if we just got QoL updates, Protoss was kinda supposed to be the finnicky, micro-heavy race with powerful, but expensive spells and units. Now they just kinda feel tanky and expensive. And it seems like with each new expansion and patch, the solution to "balancing" the game is to just chip away more and more at things that make Protoss unique and either toss them away or push them into the other races. Yeah, the Reaver was a pain in the ass to use and required full-time babysitting, but it was worth it. You just go into reaver with the understanding that half the cost of a shuttle needs to be tacked onto its price and that wherever you drop it off will need your constant attention until its job is done. And, yeah, a reaver can _very_ quickly ruin your fucking day if you're on the receiving end of one that's been used effectively, but the flip side of that is being the one dishing out that pain is fucking _delicious,_ and a big part of what makes that payoff so good is how much of an absolute bitch it is to pull off well. And being on the receiving end of one never felt cheap to me. It will definitely demand your immediate attention and will force you to adjust your plans on the spot very quickly or die, but that's just... strategy. Starcraft as a series is speed chess. Sc1/ BW is speed chess where it's perfectly legal to sneak a grenade onto the board so long as the other player doesn't catch you in the act and put a stop to it. Starcraft 2 is speed chess with someone giving you a neck massage the whole time and any time someone sneaks so much as a firecracker onto the board the ref changes the rules to make that a little harder. SC2 is probably more "balanced" and smoothed out around the edges, but SC1, IME, has way more potential for -fun- shrapnel wounds and 3rd degree burns. IDK, I do _like_ the Colossus, but it just lacks personality, IMO. And judging by many other comments in here I'm not alone in thinking this.

Funnily enough the removed unit of protoss have a pretty much exact replicas in zerg (Queen for mother's mothership core, neural for replicants) but for zergs it's not considered OP

The removal of the Mothership Core was just another example of the Zerg Cabal using their influence. After it's removal, Protoss once again became the turtle race. Instead of waiting for the death ball, they waited for Skytoss. Now they nerf Skytoss, they'll be waiting for that death ball again.

Another reason why the Soul Hunter got removed completely from the game was copyright. Marvel found the concept to be too similar to their Silver Surfer, and went after Blizzard for IP infringement. It didn't help that at the time they were leaning into the idea that the Soul Hunter was a Protoss Silver Surfer kind of unit. If not for that legal trouble, we might have had some remnant of the unit still left in the game for casual use elsewhere.

we dont know much of anything about the Tempest in contrast against the carrier, just that it was DT colored and had Shurikens rather then Interceptors, and Shurikens didnt have an air attack. It was an alpha unit that wasnt in any public version of the game, not even blizcon builds

Sorry to be _That guy_ but... *Um- Acualy!* The Brutalisk was planned for multiplayer but would have been far smaller than in the campaign. Infestors originally had the ability to infest structures, similar to coop Stukov. Queens were planned to have stages of growth like Hatcheries and had far more different abilities. Theirs some Nydus worm variants not implemented. Theirs plenty of scrapped units.

Mother Core was so so so so BAD in the game... I remember killing Broodlords with it when charging my Nexus, it was so stupid, T1.5 Flying Unit... only not super good vs Zerg and that mainly on their base because in any other part of the map you couldn't get a counter in early game. The Pylon Rushes later and their memes... damn, I still at this day am thankfull that it went away from multiplayer.

I will say, conceptually, colossus is just infinitely better than ArtilleryWorm. There is no excuse for the void ray, though. Having one unit that's just good against everything and can also fly was bound to have several several several issues.
