You can fix the drift issues by going to extremes but I love that you are taking the time to design a proper PCB. I did the same thing with the Blues Jr, both PCBs. It takes a lot of time and effort

Class work Brad. I've already had a board replacement on my JCM2000 but knowing you're working on the upgrade fills me with a lot of hope I can keep using this DSL of mine for another 20 years.

See a need, fill a need. You're brilliant, you bloody champion! I do know many artists who refuse to part with their DSL, and TSL heads. This will quell their concerns, and all other concerns worldwide. My sincere thanks and admiration, mate.

A tech lifted the curcuit on my DSL 2000 by cutting traces and hand wiring that part of the board. That was mid 2000s, so the amp went bad very early in its life. The band-aid fix worked well at the time, but that it would become leaky over time in other places on the PCB makes sense. I got another 12 months use out of it before trading it for a brand new Randy Rhoads amp that blew up several days after arriving in NZ. I wonder if the 1959RR had the same problem, because it went into full melt down mode in much the same way. Massive damage. I will not go near any JCM 2000 amps now; unless perhaps the seller shows evidence the board has been replaced by somebody I trust. Sure, Gary Moore used them and sounded fantastic, but he could get spare amps from the factory in Milton Keynes (where I grew up, so I have more than one nostalgic reason for liking Marshall -- nostalgia is not a rational thing though huh). P.S. The best amps Marshall have made since 2000 might be the 1987X and the 2203X. Not super expensive like the 1959HW, but they sound pretty much like the real deal and seem to last. I might be wrong though. How's the PCB with the ones made during the 2000s? I also think the new made in Vietnam DSL40 is okay for the money. The DSL20 too. That Lambchooper channel fella over the ditch there got good sounds and service from his for ages. They cheap out in ways, but they do sound good and seem to last -- for the most part. I might be wrong there too of course. That's one reason I watch channels like this. To find out the pros and cons with various amps out there. The Psonic vids on the issues with Fender reissue amps is another. I also like laughing at Mesa. Players that own them think they are the bee's knees and their gear is so much better quality than everybody's else's, especially the Mesa owners who also own a PRS. Not that I can be stuffed arguing with them. Just knowing they're oblivious to how they've consumed snake oil and are boasting about supposed quality is satisfying enough 😆 (I should not be laughing mind you, because I was had by the Randy amp - but their snobbery makes them fair game).

Great video-thanks for sharing! I’ve had to fix more of these than I’d like to admit. The only real solution has been replacing the entire board with a better-made one from Marshall. Since upgrading the board on my personal 1998 DSL100, it’s been running well, and the bias has stayed stable. The amp gets gigged regularly, but I’m always a bit nervous it might fail eventually due to the original design issues. I’ve also got a friend’s JCM2000 DSL100 waiting for a new board. When these become available, I’d love to grab one. Excellent work on this! subscribed.

I have a JCM2000 DSL 100 that has the Bias Drift problem. Here in Brazil you can't find this type of replacement board. I hope I can buy one of these to revive my amplifier. I really like the sound of the 2000, it has an incredible timbre! I'll wait for the availability to import one of these boards! Thank you!

Hello Brad. Those look great. A guy came to me with a TSL100. He had bought the Dr Tube bias mod kit and asked me to install it. I installed it, once I had sorted some previous work done on it by Bodge it and Scarper. It worked okay but I did warn him he may get other problems later down the line. It was a sticking plaster fix. I decline the JCM200s normally as there is no proper fix for them. Well it looks like there is now! You are one hell of a tech Brad. Take care.

It's quite disappointing that Marshall didnt notice the issue before commercial release. However one can forgive them for thst - worse that they didn't recall and immediate revision or provide a better solution. I suppose that was prohibitively expensive. Its fab that you and Jace from Headfirst are offering a correction for some of these poor design choices.

I tried using a Genrad insulation test bridge on a JCM2000 board. It was about as stupid as testing a piece of very badly burnt toast. Sometimes stupid is fun. It was kinda fun, in a burnt fiberglass aroma sort of way. I wish I'd done it with the lights out. 1000 volts DC finds a lot of faults.

It sounds like this problem could happen to any amp where the power valves are direct soldered to the PCB? For my own amp, I'm leaning further and further towards turrets on a phenolic board, with totally separate boards for the preamp and power amp.

Excellent news. I have a TSL100 combo (with an Issue 20 board) and a DSL50 (with the original board) so keen, as an amp tech, to see what can be done with these boards, especially as I dread it when a JCM2000 comes in with issues. Is it worth doing a 50w board too Brad? I assume this board with alternate BOM should work - it seems to be like that on the DSL50. Will follow this with interest.

@@BradsGuitarGarage i was sympathizing with buying a TSL, but after watching a couple of psionic audios videos, i became quite hesitant. bought an Engl Powerball 2 instead, found out that techs usually think Engl amps to be badly designed too, but so far i can't complain, thing works like a charm. TSLs are avaliable on the used market here for 200-300€, which is what makes them tempting.

@BradsGuitarGarage3 ай бұрын
The TSL60 and DSL401 are a complete system on single PCB boards. They still cook though, worse in the combo versions with the heat rising to heat the PCBs as I'm sure you've discovered. However, there are too many obsolete and expensive parts on them required to fit the existing amp assembly to make them economical to produce unfortunately. There were also way less of them the produced. I think I've only had 1 or 2 DSL401's and 2 TSL60's in my whole career, but lost count of the TSL/DSL100's that have come through.
