He backed off because he THOUGHT it would help out his friends who were facing serious sentences for defending themselves. Also let's not kid ourselves, he also left to save his own skin. I don't blame him for either personally. The PB's only became "serious" because of threats of violence from domestic left wing terrorist groups who were very well funded.
