water mixable oils are oils so asking which one is the oil painting is a daft question because they both are.

Theres no real reason why they should look different. unless you thin the w/m oil with water .... which you shouldnt do. they have their own stand oils and spirits. the water mixable tag is confusing as it really only means you can wash your brushes with water after a session.

Thanks for the testing. I suspect that in the future I will be migrating from the use of oil-based paints to water mixable oil paints as I run through the paint supplies that I have on hand. But it would be nice to repeat the comparison testing process once the finished paintings have been varnished and perhaps even framed.

Guys, there wont be a difference unless you actually add water to the paint. I use water mixable and never add a drop of water which means my oils remain just oils. So..why bother? Because they do not smell like oils and the brushes can be easily cleaned with soap and water.

water mixable oil has more room to do water-based techniques which traditional oil would not represent I suppose. You can tell from the strokes look like tempera painting.

I have used both and I can’t tell the difference. Not sure how a person could tell?

david gollop they would still look the same. Varnish makes the colors more vibrant and dark but since they’re both oils and the paintings looked identical they would still appear the same. Acrylics also get darker and vibrant when you varnish.

Not a proper study. The left/right postilion of the paintings should have been randomized to avoid any possible left/right bias. And it's too small of a sample size.

They are both oil paints - when the medium and binder dries, they are the same thing. It's a redundant question .

It's not a very fair test when you make a painting that looks like it could be done easily in something like acrylic. If you did this test with a larger painting that require more blending, I think you'd get better results.

The only qualification would be to ask oil paint using artists. And it really should be a closer distance, say of 3 feet to 5 feet. If the water mixable oils can stand up to that test, they really are a great product. If they can not stand up to that test, no point to them.
