Welcome back to ‘the bible says what’. Today I will summarize Proverbs chapter 13, which contains 25 of Solomon’s proverbs. I will give you another sampling of these, since there are many proverbs covering many topics. Let me encourage you to read all of the rest of them soon.
Solomon wrote: A wise son will listen and obey his father’s instruction. A foolish son will ignore him. A wise man will eat good food. But God will feed the sinner’s soul much violence. The wise man will keep his mouth shut, but the wicked will be destroyed by his foolish talk. The lazy person will have nothing, but the diligent will have much. The righteous man hates lies. The wicked man loves them.
Solomon continued: there are people who pretend to be rich, but in reality they have nothing. And there are people who pretend to be poor, but in reality they have great riches. Rich people must give a ransom for their life or their loved ones lives when they are kidnapped. The poor don’t have to worry about kidnappings. Wealth that was acquired by deception will dissolve. Wealth earned by hard work will increase. Whoever walks and talks with wise men will be wise themselves. Whoever walks and talks with fools will be fools themselves.
Solomon taught; God will pay back every person for everything they have done. To the righteous, their payment will be sweet. To the wicked, their payment will be eternal death. A good man will leave an inheritance to his grandchildren when he dies. But the riches of the wicked will be taken from his children and will be given to the righteous. Whoever does not discipline his child with a rod hates his child. Whoever loves his children will discipline them. The righteous will receive mercy and will have every desire satisfied when God concludes this chapter of His story. But the wicked will get nothing good in the end. They will get everything they deserve.
The most important verses in this chapter are Proverbs 13:20 through 22 which states, ‘He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repaid. A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.’
The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that He encourages everyone to listen to their parents when they teach what is right. People should be content in whatever situation they find themselves. Rich people have ransom problems that the poor do not have to deal with. The poor have problems the rich do not have to deal with. But everyone has problems. God wants us to know that we will be like the people we spend time with, so we should spend time with the right kinds of people. The wise person will give an inheritance to their grandchildren. Responsible spankings are approved by God. And God wants everyone to understand that He will pay everyone back for what they have done.
Are you content in the situation that you find yourself in? Are you spending time with the right kinds of people? Are you a person that others want to spend time with? Repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross to pay for your sin, and he Father raised Jesus from the dead. God said if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. Why don’t you do that right now?
