The grit, determination, heart and love of the game not to mention his dedication to his team's overall success is why Michael Jordan is the greatest of all time. Bill has his rings during the genesis of the NBA, Kareem was a great showman for a big man. His touch on the game is still remembered with respect. Magic Johnson had flash and flair. Dr. J had pizzazz. Larry Bird had heart. Isiah Thomas had grit. Michael Jordan had all of that and more.

Jordan is one of only four players to make first team all defense nine times and won player of the year on defense once. We also have to remember that he took two years off in his prime to play baseball so he probably would have had eleven selections had he been playing plus he was still the best player in the NBA in 98 at age 34. He's clearly the best offensive player in history and there is an argument that he might very well have been the best defender also which is insane with the offensive load he carried.

The Jordan Vs. LeBron video by DangerProductions really put this in context when he compared the two's per-game stats relative to position (MJ as SG and LeBron as SF). In all five major statistical categories (scoring, steals, assists, rebounds, blocks) MJ is top 3 among SG's. LBJ by comparison isn't even top 10 in all 5, with both his steals and blocks falling outside the top top and his steals just BARELY breaking top ten. Jordan was also top 10 in FG%, and one has to realize that 49.7% overall is exceptional as a perimeter guard, most of the all-time great SG's don't even come close to hit 50% from the field because the shots they are expected to take don't have as much of a success rate as the big men closer to the rim. The only reason MJ's FG% dropped in his later years was because he had to take more jumpers due to declining athleticism, and his overall efficiency was still very high as a perimeter player.

his efficiency was only good INSIDE the perimeter outside of it he isnt even a top 100 in history his 3pt % was 32% which is mediocre at best but even worse if the league didnt make the 3pt line closer while he was in his prime his actual career % is 28.8 from outside the perimeter, thats just plain bad for reference, the worst shooters in the league today, are the centers, shooting at exactly 32.6, mj doesnt even come close to a good 3pt shooter he doesnt even shoot close to the worst shooters today

@@semyongalitsky9593 I never mentioned 3-point shooting. Your response makes no sense in the context of my post, and regardless his overall efficiency was still incredibly high as an SG, leading the league in scoring 10 ten times while attempting less than 2 3-point shots per game on average.

@@TKDBoy1889 my response makes alot of sense you just clearly dont know what a perimeter player is. its the one thing mj was not good at, the average center in todays game is a better perimeter player than prime mj and thats supported by facts his shooting outside the perimeter was awful and therefore he was never a good perimeter player. just acknowledge the fact that your goat was never complete and had flaws, so big of flaws that if today he didnt try and fix them well, he would be a roleplayer, probably playing at the SF as well.

MJ was just great at EVERYTHING on the basketball court. He's the only player I ever watched and kept thinking "Is there anything this guy doesn't do exceptionally well?" And the answer always turned out to be "No". There was no weakness in MJ's game, and he had a motor that never quit. Whenever anyone said MJ wasn't good at something, he would do his "And I took it personal" thing and prove them wrong. My favorite was when people had the audacity to say Clyde Drexler might be a better shooter and therefore a better player than MJ. MJ took it personal, then went out and set the then record for 3-pointers in a Finals game (The "Shrug" Game). Then there's the Flu Game. And then his last Finals game which he ended with probably the best defense to offense sequence in NBA history when he stripped the ball from Karl Malone then went down to the other end, juked Brian Russel out of his shoes, then calmly sank the game-winning shot for his 6th ring. If ANY single play could make someone the "Greatest of All Time", it would be THIS play, not some chase-down block/goal tend that didn't even win the series for his team. When someone greater than MJ comes along, we'll see it with our own eyes, just like we saw MJ's greatness with our own eyes.

The way he saw the game. You can tell he had a demeanor to win and not just “play for fun”. Listen to how he talked about the game. How many players said “I don’t play conservatively”. So he’ll go all out on defense. And he was always locked in even in a loss or bad game. He might of not got the job done in a series at times but it wasn’t because he choked. He took his losses and came back competitive and competing again and again. It’s not easy to have a target on your back and win consecutive finals. There’s a saying. “The wolf at the bottom of the mountain is hungrier than the wolf at the top”. In MJ’s case, once he got to the top his hunger grew even more. And the clutch moments and performances in his finals are proof of that. You can’t say it was weak competition because his opponents had 55-60+ regular season wins in the finals.

It feels so bad that MJ's goat status which was unanimously GIVEN to him is being challenged by someone who's just TELLING the world he's the goat. This should never be the case. You can't tell the world you're the goat. It must be given to you. How? By exceeding what MJ has done on and off the Basketball court. That's the only way. Not by downplaying eras or players. Coz that was never the case until LeBron tried lowering down the standards to laughable levels such as scoring records, tournament cups, bubble ring, etc. Not even his age deserves a debate. For the man who calls himself the GOAT (LeBron) and leads all players in total points going into another season, MJ has a huge lead in Scoring Titles and he absolutely kicked LeBron, Bird, Kareem & Magic's ass! (I'm trying to make a point without typing any numbers or stats) The content creator mentioned prove Jordan is the GOAT without scoring stats and that's what I'm trying to do.

I believe that the greatest two way player of all time is Hakeem but Jordan is right there. Anyway Jordan is the GOAT also because he was a great leader who lead by the example and always raised his game when you need it the most. Another important aspect of his game is that he played in the flow of the offense without dominating the ball and when he had the ball in his hands his decisions were quick and decisive.
@labynoe
@labynoe 2 ай бұрын
Exactly. MJ didn't do any of that "dribbling the air out of the ball" nonsense you see in today's game. MJ could be as flashy as anyone, but he was never flashier than he needed to be to score. MJ was never trying to show-off, just win the game. Compare that to today's "Check my Stats" players of today...
@phillipschuman4307
@phillipschuman4307 2 ай бұрын
All the greatest centers besides Hakeem were greater two way players than Jordan. They weren't perimeter defenders-- they shut down the paint and protected the rim-- and could score like Jordan but at a higher efficiency. So Wilt, Kareem and Hakeem (probably Shaq too) were doing what Jordan could not do, needing another player to do it (the interior defense and defensive rebounding). How wasn't Jordan 'dominating' the ball when he led the league in usage rate 8x, was 2nd another 3x, and has the highest career usage rate all-time in the regular season, and 2nd all-time in the playoffs? Also leading the league in most shots taken (and most shots missed!) almost every season.
@sergioa.9695
@sergioa.9695 2 ай бұрын
@@phillipschuman4307 Shaq wasn't a top tier defensive center, definitely not on Hakeem, Wilt or Robinson level. Now obviously Jordan could not do the job of a center but basically no center can do on the perimeter what Jordan can do. Jordan is a great shot blocking guard by the way. Do you wanna Jordan do also the job of a center? Cmon lol. It's easier for a center be a good/great two way player by way and even if usually a great center is more efficient than a guard Jordan ts% was up there with the best offensive centers ever. Now to the ball dominant part, do you realize that usage rate is not directly correlated to that? Jordan shot a lot but always in the flow of the Triangle offense, he was a play finisher but not nearly as ball dominant as players like Doncic, Harden, Westbrook or even Lebron.
@phillipschuman4307
@phillipschuman4307 2 ай бұрын
@@sergioa.9695 Thanks for mentioning DR, who is another great defending two way playing center who could score a lot, with more two-way impact than Jordan. Obviously Shaq is not at their level, but he wasn't a bad defender. He made some all-defense teams, and was usually in the top ten for blocks per game (8x top 6, with 2nd once, 3rd twice, and a 4th). Plus he intimidated players by 'touching them up' if they came inside. Usage rate is the percentage of his team's possessions ended by his shot, his turnover, or a shot taken from his passes. Of all those things, they mostly ended with him taking a shot (and a lot of those were isos on his part).
@sergioa.9695
@sergioa.9695 2 ай бұрын
@@phillipschuman4307Sure great defensive centers especially in that era had more impact than a perimeter players defensively. Still Jordan was an incredible two way player. High usage rate obviously most of the time indicate that a player dominate the offense with the ball in his hands a lot, not with Jordan. He touched the ball a lot and usually finished plays but never while hog or dribble the ball a lot. Obviously Bulls offense was mainly dependent on him scoring wise but that's not by default the definition of a ball dominant player.

Bulls made the playoffs EVERY year he was in a Bulls uniform after being mostly cellar dwellers before and after he left. MJ didnt lose 3 games in a row for almost a decade including the playoffs. As a SG he's averaged the most Assists in a Finals series besides Magic and he did this AGAINST Magic in 1991. When MJ came back from his broken foot and playing on a minutes restriction he had, what was it, 11 Triple Doubles in 22 games AT THE PG POSISTION! Retired at his peak, changed his body for baseball, came back rusty, and still averaged 26 ppg. The very next year his team went 72-10 and won the Championship. Seriously I could keep on going but these are just the things that popped up in my head first.

Something i hate about stats is how context lacking they can be, for example, back in the 50s and 60s the tempo was insanely quick, and the shooting wasn't good, getting rebounds and blocks was "easier" because it provided with more opportunities, but they still had to fight for them. Nowadays on the 3 pt era, star players get 8 defensive rebounds a game without battling NOBODY but their own teammates, imagine staying under the basket, waiting for a failed 3 pointer, just to be compared in rebounds to players that were getting elbows to the ribs and being tossed up and down because there was actually opposition at the paint.

There are a million YT videos like this, that do an outstanding job proving why MJ is the GOAT but very few that list the intangibles. -MJ was as clutch or greater than all of the other greats (Bird, Kobe etc) -MJ’s competitiveness is what fueled him to be the best on both sides of the ball -MJ never made any excuses, never complained about the quality of his teammates, never demanded a trade or a coaching change. -MJ played EVERY game he possibly could- sick, injured, banged up, tired. He played because he wanted his team to win and the fans paid money to see him play. -When the spotlight was the brightest and the pressure was at its highest, MJ ALWAYS rose to the occasion. -No other player has ever been more feared than MJ, because everyone else on the court knew he was the GOAT and everyone knew he was unstoppable. Players have never feared Lebron. -MJ is the GOAT because he completely transformed his game, halfway through his career. MJ entered the NBA as a high flying, athletic freak. Via a combination of speed, dexterity, quickness, agility and elevation- MJ was able to get around and elevate above any defender at will. But over time, his athleticism faded, so he had to completely alter his game. MJ packed on 15-20 pounds of muscle, developed an unstoppable fade, a post up game on par with anyone etc. Lebron’s game is basically the same as when he started, with slightly less athleticism and a slightly better jump shot. The only player to even come close to MJ is Kobe and I think even he’d acknowledge that MJ is still the GOAT. Lebron will never be the GOAT, Jokic on the other hand is SPECIAL. If he plays another 5+ years at this level, In terms of the greatest basketball player of all time (Minus the championships of course), he’s in a whole different category.

The deeper one goes when comparing MJ and LeBron the more you realize that there really is no comparison. Besides, LeBron isn't even top ten. No player who has more Finals losses than wins, has lost the most Finals games in NBA history, has committed the most turnovers in NBA history, missed the most field goals in NBA history as well as top ten in missed free throws and three pointers deserves to considered in the top ten of all time.

Jordan never quit on his team at any time in his career when the Bulls were losing a game or series, though he may had done too much to carry his Bulls teams to win against the Bird led Celtics, though he never won a single game against him. Jordan retiring first or second time doesn't mean he quit, he was more exhausted from attention or scrutiny he had, especially during his first retirement. Stats are meaningless to an extent when players play in different eras. But the leadership ability and ability to lead the team will never be different among eras, and Jordan had better leadership qualities, along with taking loss and accountability like a man. Though I'd think Tim Duncan or Bill Russell are better team leaders in NBA history to show leadership doesn't mean being the best and the leader all the time, Jordan was obsessed winner and annihilator to tell his opponents that he is better than his opponent at full strength. He is the ultimate competitor in team sport history.

They perhaps are the greatest trio defenders in history. Not sure on defense if 1 was better than the others but all 3 were elite on defense. Wasn't even a Chicago fan. In my eyes there is only 1 person who can be in that same conversation with Michael Jordan when it comes to the greatest of all time conversation. And that's Larry Bird. Claire bird and Michael Jordan have this weird commonality where they weren't just a offensive player with a skill set that was unmatched. They both were extremely good on defense and completely overlooked by today's analysts and podcasters and supposed NBA youtubers. What made Michael Jordan and Larry Bird in my honest God opinion set aside from the rest of the people that have played basketball is their IQ on the court. They were intelligent to the point where it was unreal and almost not human.

Claire Bird? 😆😅 Seriously though, Larry Legend was basically White Jordan....or more accurately, Jordan was Black Bird. Both did everything at an elite level, though you can point to one being a bit better than the other at certain things, neither did something poorly. People might say MJ was a poor 3pt shooter but that's not the case, at least not _for his era_ where he was almost always above average. Larry of course was superb as a three point marksman. If I were to list common attributes where one was better than the other but the other was still great, it would be: Larry - passing, rebounding, BBIQ, 3pt shooting Jordan - scoring, defense, mid range shooting, finishing Both were legendary trash talkers and clutch performers, probably equal in those regards.
