In an interview she actually said that she wanted to empower women to actually stand up for them self and not depend on a man if it doesn't feel right, just because society wants them to. love how much more powerful her voice and demeanor were here compared to her 1964 live performance. she wasn't afraid to take up space, she didn't say "please" at "when i go out with you." she wasn't asking, she was DEMANDING. now in her 40s, she proudly asserted that she was still young and free and unburdened by men's expectations of how women should behave, a wonderful message considering how society thinks women should have "settled down" and moved on from their "rebellious phase" already by that age. because she was a lesbian, this song wasn't just the complaints of a girlfriend for her oppressive boyfriend, but an anthem for women overall againt sexism and societal expectations. what an incredible lady and a pop classic 💕

I've never done this before: revisit this video to reiterate what I said the first time. So I watched this again, paying careful attention to her phrasing and keys throughout. And come to the same conclusion, that this version really pales in many creative and musical ways compared to her original version. I realize she is much older and perhaps trying to perform it in a new or updated way. But, seriously, nothing about it even comes close to the power of the original. I find this version rather annoying and quite "stagey". Like she's in a musical instead of performing a brilliantly written hit song.

How many artists can sing like that live like she did at that age? Not many. RIP Leslie

LOVED THIS GAL... she was so popular when I was in College... that song TAUGHT ME THAT NO ONE HAD ANY RIGHT TO CONTROL ME... Women were never paid the same as men in those days... and could not advance even though we deserved it more than the guys... I have had a wonderful life... free and prospered greatly ! So sad that she smoked and died form lung cancer... really sad ! I retired from owning my own business when I was only 52!

Absolutely magic, this is a lesson on how to sing and perform a song. I loved her when younger and her attitude in the song was fantastic then, but she has managed keep that attitude still! Again fantastic!!!

UGH!! I'm an emotional WRECK after hearing her sing this!! Especially as we are going into Pride month. This song in so many ways was her 'coming out' song but at the time nobody knew it. Her interpretation coupled with those affirming lyrics has me flooded with tears and now know WHY as a child this song left its mark on me after all these years. It kicked up my own personal activism and self discovery though Stonewall wouldn't happen until 1970 and the meaning of that was tone deaf to me until I became a young adult. Lesley awakened the activists within us all regardless of gender with this song. Unforgettable

As a heterosexual woman that knows the culture & times of the 60s & that she was only 17, I personally believe she had to date boys & this was her reaction to all that crap that boys give girls, including men give women. That's why this song has been applied to failed relationship shows like the first wives club. Since the dawn of time Men have been possessive & oppressive & women have strived to be free of all that. Her being homosexual & pretty it probably really affected her when boys that she didn't like to kiss told her that her lips belonged to him she better not kiss anyone else. I get freaked out by that crap & I like kissing men.

I agree with you Alicia. That was the best music. All those songs from back then all had a meaning to them. When I use to disc jockey back in the early 70s I use to play all that doo wop music more than anything else

Absolutely FABULOUS performance by Lesley Gore, may she rest in peace. She was such a twinkling star in that era. The icing on the cake for me was to see Jeff Porcaro (R.I.P.), one of the very best drummers to walk this earth, in her backup band.
