I lived in Siena for 1 year of studies, 18 years ago, and have not been able to go back since then, but your video took me right back to this magical city where i spent so many great moments. Was very hopefull you would pass on my street, Via Casato di Sopra, but unfortunatly you didnt. I cant believe we didn't go in to the Duomo on a day trip to Siena. Did anyone spot the Donatello sculpture of John the Baptist - brilliant! FYI - it's worth while reading abut Siena in Rick Steve's Italy book - or the snap-shot hill town guides. Honestly he's the best at providing enough info to ead, and then these videos are great orientation. I now need to get back to Siena! Really super video again

Hi! What you saw and asked in the minute 5:51 is one of the containers Saint Catherines´head was brought from Rome to Siena in 1383 and it was at first placed in a copper container and then in a silver one,now empty but still on display in the Basilica. In 1711 it was removed to an urn in the form of a lamp done by the sculptor Giovanni Piamontini where it remained until 1947.

Finally, it's here ☺; complete with Libreria Piccolomini etc; thank you!👏🏼 I know there have been some observations against "zooming", but please don't completely stop doing it, there are times and places where it actually matters and fit: when focusing on a specific piece of art, a detailed part of it to show its quality, or historical detail; if you don't do it the risk is to just show "very colored walls" or "monochromatic statues", but when one is physically around - it does naturally happen to focus on such details - and that's a big part of the experience. unfortunately the zoom dynamics is a bit "robotic" but that's just a limitation of the implementation of cameras, there's nothing one can do about it. in general, it's good to experiment a bit, always. don't let negative feedback on some experiment deter you to do that. experimenting is fun :)

Hey, I really appreciate the feedback. I've had a few negative comments...which I'm not used to getting. The zooming was definitely an experiment but I didn't think it would be too distracting. Now I know. I have since found that that if I use the zoom dial on the lens instead of the zoom dial on my gimbal, I have a lot more control of the speed, so it is not as noticeable. I filmed a walk of Seattle this last weekend only used the zoom a few times. Either way, I used the zoom on all the walks I filmed this summer so hopefully viewers can still enjoy the tours. Thanks for this. I haven't watched for a while, but I'm currently isolating because of covid, so it was lovely to spend the afternoon in Siena. The museum containing Duccio's Maesta is well worth a visit, but it's one of those art museums containing people yelling 'no photo!', so not appropriate for your channel. I was thrilled to see the vivid colours of the frescoes in the crypt of the Duomo. Have never seen them before.

I commend you and always love your tours. I was just watching another channel doing a walk thru Brisbane and while beautiful, he kept doing quick pans looking around and up and down buildings. I had to avert my eyes temporarily because it was annoying. I just rewatched one of your videos and noticed that you don't do quick pans at all and it makes your videos so much more relaxing and easy to watch for hours.

I was curious, so I went looking for information on the box at 5:45. It looks a lot like the box her head used to be in, but it was moved and the crown on top was put inside. At least that’s what it looks like to me. It might be another box that is similar.

I like to watch these videos primarily because I can imagine that I am there, experiencing the place for myself. Every time you zoom in/out it shatters that experience. I try to tell myself to ignore it, but it's impossible at this point. Other commenters have repeatedly shared the same negativity towards all the zooming. You even acknowledge it, but here you are, zooming away as if you want to show who's boss. Well, sir, you are the boss, and I quit.

I am not trying to show who's boss...I'm trying to help the viewer see things more clearly. I'm sorry you don't like it but I can't change the video after I film it. Sure, I understand what you're saying. The zoom on art (stained glass, statues, etc.) is fine. The zoom from the Fortezza Medicea looking to the Duomo hill was good, too. None of the other ones helped, although the one at 3:49:35 was appreciated.

I'm not completely sure I understood which holes, but basically at the time for taller buildings (even regular ones, not just the important ones) it was normal to have those, and as far as I know the reason was actually practical: during the building or renovation, you needed some form of scaffolding. It was anchored there; wooden planks were inserted there and wooden boards were placed over them and workers then could walk over them around the building. You can actually see a depiction of it in a fresco in Siena - the allegory of good and bad government - if you watch one of the main panels ("peaceful city" - the one with women dancing safely in the streets hand in hand) of the "Good", in the top center, slightly on the right, you can see the workers doing their job feverishly with this technique; they usually were left there, available, but less frequently in ornate buildings. But the cathedral of Siena has a tormented story, it was meant to be much larger (see also the story of the facciatone) but then the plague struck particularly hard and a huge part of the population died, thus they had to rework their plans. cheers from Italy

Isaac, I think I remember you saying somewhere that you try to avoid engaging with people on your walks because you want the viewers experience to be as if they were walking and not you (or something like that). I thought this was a great outlook and your virtual walks have always been very immersive, smooth-flowing, with a natural, human pace and perspective that viewers can lose themselves in. The zooming really kills that flow and breaks the mood, in my opinion. It's just too suddenly jarring and not something that adds anything to the reality or pleasure of the walk. Sorry to be critical but I've been a fan of yours for several years and this is just some humbly offered feedback. Thank you.

Yes, I definitely try to give that experience. I didn't realize how much the zooming would interfere with that. I filmed these last group of walks back in July so I can't change them now. I did film a walk around Seattle last weekend and only zoomed a few times, and when I did, it was very slow. I'm sorry to hear the zooming has been so disruptive to the experience. ...........It could also just be you critical viewers. :) I've had a few complaints but a lot. I've found that if I zoom with the camera lens, instead of the dial on my gimbal, it zooms much more smoothly and slowly, so if I feel the need to zoom, I'll use that. I do like to be able to control the focal length. Sometimes a wide angle is good, and sometimes narrow. .....but hopefully I can do it without the viewer noticing the change. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I've got some pretty strong feedback on this issue. I will definitely adjust my filming next time I'm out. I've found that if I zoom in using the button on the lens instead of the dial on my gimbal, I have a lot more control. If I need to zoom, I'll use the lens button instead.
