Having seen "Luca" twice now, my mind's still caught up in that gorgeous Italian setting. Sure enough, when I found out that Vernazza was the inspiration for the fictional seaside town of Portorosso, I immediately thought of your channel, figuring that you'd probably visited it before. Lo and behold, here we are. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful place with us. Just perfect! We were there in '16 and you could still climb to the top of the tower. Sad to see the it needs repair, I'm sure it was never built to withstand millions of tourists. At the base of the tower you can see the gigantic Rosemary bushes that were so fragrant that whenever I chop some Rosemary at home I think of that perfect day in Vernazza. I also like the geology of the Cinque Terra with the layered rock rising out of the sea. You can see it in all the towns.Looks like more than just lava going on there.

Vernazza was also our favorite when we stayed there for 3 wonderful nights in early Oct 2017! Yes, there were crowds during the day but we did the hike between Monterosso and Vernazza, and walked above the town and also above Manarola another day and the mornings and evenings were wonderful. When you climbed up to the castle, you went right past the door of the apartment where we stayed that had a balcony where we sat and enjoyed the wonderful sea!

Interesting fact that Rick Steves popularized the Cinque Terra(turn on subtitles for lots of interesting facts about Prowalks’ videos). Never thought he could be a blessing and (sort of) a curse especially since we are such big fans of his. I grew up in a touristy town in Michigan, U.S. and although the town enjoys the influx of tourists and the money they bring, it can be a bit overwhelming at times. I can’t imagine how quickly life changed in the Cinque Terra with the sudden influx of tourists... Thanks for posting all the Cinque Terra locations videos Prowalks. Your videos refresh our wonderful memories of our visits (all over Italy).
@ProWalks4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yeah, I learned that fact from someone who lives there in Vernazza. Apparently things all changed after Rick Steves did a show there. It definitely has changed their economy. I know there was some sort of ordinance that the local officials were trying to get passed to limit the number of people who could get off the trains in each town. Yeah..a blessing and a curse for sure. It's why I like Naples and all the other non-touristy areas around here. They still feel real. Florence is great...but it just feels like you are walking around a tourist shop the entire time.
@CapybaraCM4 жыл бұрын
@@ProWalks We also heard that the local officials were trying to limit trains and visitors when we were there four years ago. Government often moves at a glacial pace and I understand Italian governments are no different ;-) Agree with sentiments about Florence as well as many other touristy Italian towns. Can be that way even in the states though we don't have quite as deep of history, LOL.
