Proxxon FD 150/E Lathe

The Proxxon FD150/E is a compact metal working lathe for facing and longitudinal turning, boring, taper turning, parting and drilling.
The high maximum speed (5000rpm) allows very small diameters to be machined.
The lathe has an accurate bed made from cast aluminium and the spindle from diecast aluminium.
It is run using a powerful, quiet running DC motor which has a two stage belt drive used in conjunction with an electronic speed control to achieve the full speed range (500-5000rpm).
The main spindle runs with precision bearings and has a continuous bore of 8.5mm.
A three jaw self-centring chuck is supplied with an inside jaw range of 1.5-32mm and 12-65mm outside.
The tailstock comes with a live centre and has an MK0/short bore.
There is a quick change tool post with the machine accepting 6mm tooling.

I've been working as a research machinist for 40 years and during this time I've never seen a small lathe worthy of the same craftsmanship seen in older machines like the Hardinge, Bridgeports, Southbend and Clausing. Much thought and design is put into theses machines but you will never see it in these small lathes even though we have the latest in CNC technology that makes parts with greater efficiency and accuracy with far less labor. Is it asking too much to make better machines as we do with cars? I suppose this is the result of the end of the industrial age as the information age has taken over.

I agree! I would love to see a desktop size lathe thats completely overbuilt and fully capable to turn steel. We have the technology with powerful brushless motors that literally fit in the palm of your hand, I know its possible. I have an atlas 618 and I just LOVE the style they put into the older machines! Its got sleek swooping lines and curves you just can't find on any of these chinese machines. Older machines just have a quiet elegance to them that new machines are really lacking.

It's pretty interesting, but for my scale model builder needs, a machine for slightly more, with a lead screw and solid metal gears would probably be the better choice to cut anything from plastic up to brass and aluminium.

I,m sure there are better mini lathes around than this one, but none are as small as this and for my small workshop, this is as large as i can go, it appears to be well made all so.

This thing is really cute, but probably not too useful. I can do far more, and obtain or build more accessories for my 7x16 mini. The minis currently being sold by Micro Mark and Little Machine Shop use more powerful brushless DC motors that do NOT need the 2-speed noisy gearbox required by older minis.

7x16 is a legend, real tool, this proxxon is a toy and nothing more. Just like the mf70 it lacks the rigidity and the torque to do anything.

Yeah, the lack of a lead screw sucks, and it’s underpowered, and you won’t be able to find much tooling for it. But you have to remember, this isn’t for machinists, this is for model makers.

Thease lathes are very expensive aswell you can get more bang for your buck and with the same accuracy from amadeal or worko or Axminster or clarke ect ect...

I have a Warco lathe but the FD 150 fits the bill for small fiddly work machining parts for model boats. The Proxxon is light and small enough to keep indoors and move to where I want to work. The Warco had to be lifted with an engine hoist into position. So horses for courses.

Hah, hah! How many SAE & metric threads does it cut? Thought so! I didn't see a bunch of gears in the headstock! If you really want to give me an orgasm, come out with a model that has a quick-change gearbox.... of course, I'm dreaming. That just doesn't seem to be available with any mini-lathe.
