We go back to the vineyard today to prune the vines after their first season. I go over some basic terminology and then prune them to concentrate on developing strong root systems and trunks in the second year. I then run out foliage wires to manage the canopy as it grows.

Great video. I've always wanted to grow Black Muscat's for table consumption. Just two or three plants, grapes with strong aroma, seeds and tough skin that you just cant seem to buy anymore. Tried a few years ago and the birds ate most of them.

If I'm not mistaken you have the irrigation wire something like 200-250 mm or 8"-10" above ground,and the cordon is about 800mm above gruound. Very nice and no nonsense video. Thanks

G’day mate. Yep the irrigation wire is at 300mm and cordon at 900mm glad you are enjoying the videos. Will keep pursuing this project into future years. Next up is foliage wire clips and a mini sprayer

Also.. as far as lateral growth. Is there a reason why you only leave 4 buds and not just wrap all the growth around laterally? Wouldnt that put you further ahead in the growing season? And last question (i thing 😅) do i need a certain amount of growing space for my lateral growth? I have about 3 feet in between my trellis posts.. could i run my “lateral” posts at a 45 degree angle upward? So i have more like 5 feet of lateral growth room or is that a bad idea? I’m sure you’re incredibly busy and dont have time to respond to all these detailed questions but if you could. Do you have an email where i could send you some pictures of my grape vines to see what i can do with what i have?

Excellent video as always Tim. My vineyard is the same age as yours and I'm know wondering whether to eventually cane or spur prune. A previous video of yours shows you cane pruning. How do I decide whether to can or spur prune?
@FarmLearningTim
@FarmLearningTim 3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s a video ‘s worth in the one question mate. Lots of factors to consider! I’ll do one early winter. That should give you time to decide! If it’s just a hobby vineyard though, and you are prepared to work for my money it’ll be cane every day of the week!

So i started some grapes this year with no real plan. I started them near 2 trellises and they surprisingly took off. They are both now about 2.5-3 feet tall. Its going to start getting cold here in zone 5. Should i both training them horizontally yet? Or wait till they harden over the winter? Also is it an option to train them to both go one direction? Or one to keep going up and on go horizontally? Because i planted them without knowing they are supposed to split and the trellis is on the end of my porch and only can go one way

@@FarmLearningTim sorry. I just reread my message and i dont what i was doing but its very confusing. I keep coming back to your video because its one of the only videos of early grape vines but mine are still green with foliage. I did trim runners a month ago and they shot up. I didnt know about the vine protectors, rather i used garderns tape to secure them to my trellis and they have grown pencil thickness and rather tall. I’m confused though. Do i just choose a hight i want the lateral rows to be at? Does it matter? Mine are growing up my pergola. I can get wire and secure the wire between my trellis posts of my pergola at whatever height i want, or.. just let the vines reach the top of the pergola and then go laterally? But if i do train them over at a similar height shown in your video.. mine are already at least double that height. Do i wait till they go dormant and harden to prune them back like you are doing here? Because mine are still green and not hard like this. I apologize for the 1000 questions. This is my first year, i kind of dove head first into a lot and nobody around me knows about grapes😅

We have a few grape vines at our farm house. They have not been pruned for years. My dad used to prune them. I’d like to plant a few more grape vines and prune the existing ones. Can I cut a piece of an existing plant, plant it and expect it to grow?
@FarmLearningTim
@FarmLearningTim 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Take cuttings 5-7 nodes long, from healthy one year old pencil thick wood. Treat the base with rooting hormone and bury the whole thing for a month or so (preferably in sand or perlite). This will start the roots growing. Once calloused plant in spring and follow the method in my videos
