I’ve grown tomatoes for years and I must say that was the best most informative and most concise presentation of the subject I’ve ever seen. Great job. If I could add something, I place the largest of the pruned suckers in water and the root easily in a few days. The new plants then thrive later in the season to extend my harvest. Again, great job.

I was just gonna ask if you can root the suckers. I pruned my plant, put the sucker in water and am hoping to see some roots here in a few days. It's my first time growing anything so lots of trial and error.

@@sovereigntindall5410 My first time growing tomatoes was in a greenhouse some years ago. I pop off the suckers and figured that if I bury them in the dirt they would die and act as a fertilizer. The damn thing just kept growing like crazy. So, yes you can root sucker.

I've been told to prune the suckers before, but neglected to do so on a few Sungold tomato (cherry) plants last year. Surprisingly, 4 or more suckers became major fruit producers. I noticed you clarified in the first couple minutes that "it may be OK to leave them on cherry tomatoes, but not beefsteak or larger varieties." Makes total sense. I will still prune carefully, though, because we did lose a lot of unripened fruit at the end of the season. Better pruning forces existing fruit to mature faster. Your point is well taken. Thanks!

Do not remove suckers from cherry tomatoes! It will reduce your harvest! Just 'top' the plant to make it 'bushy'. when it is about 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall. Best to use a tomato cage. You can get cattle panel, 6x6 size and cut it about 4 feet long then wrap it to make your own cage. Note: if you 'top' Okra, it makes a nice bush and no ladder needed to harvest! More on Okra - it DOES attract stink bugs. So does sunflowers.

My tomato plants are still quite small... late start here as winter stuck around until well into May... my indeterminate paste San Marzano plants are (well most everything at this point) starting to take off as we went from winter to weeks in the 90s with no rain now we had a nice 3day actual rain (not the torrential downpour) and sun and heat (predicted 105deg...) for the next week.. I have been staying on top of the suckers and low leaves this year thanks to your knowledge and some homesteaders I also follow so the tomatoes are growing up the wire like they should!! Thanks for your tips and hints!!! BTW!! I love your tank top!!! Happy Gardening from NY!!!

I took your advice when I planted my bed this year. I have no limbs btm 12 inches, and was keeping up with the suckers for about the first 1-2 months. I have missed a few, they grew very strong and started producing fruits. Then I came across a video stating that the suckers grow fruit. My plants right now, are @ 5 feet tall... and I have never had soo much fruit before..., I did just pick off one bad tom with end rot.... other that that one fruit, these toms are growing insane! Thank You.

Oh they will often grow fruit, esp if they're the only branches. What I tend to see is someone who does zero suckering and then there is so much plant that it struggles to support fruit on those limbs. Glad to hear it's working out for you!

You can also use the suckers to create clones of the mother plant. Simply dip them in some rooting hormone and plant them in some seedling starter soil and keep it moist. I usually get a success rate around 60%. It beats starting tomato plants from seed and you get are able to keep the varieties you like the most. The climate I live in, the tropics, allows for a year round harvest season, so it makes sense for someone like me. I can replace a plant with the exact same one, once the original plant has run its course or dies due to insects or disease, and keep on growing.

It helped me a lot to get explaint what to have left in the end, instead of getting explained what to cut away. So, in the end you have there only the mainstam, the leaves and the flowers/young fruits. Therefor it may help to lern how complex a leave at a tomatoplant can be. But that it is: A trunk, leaves, flowers.

I live in Alaska and it is almost impossible to grow tomatoes out doors. We have short growing seasons but up to 18 hours of intense sun by mid season. I have really had amazing good luck in the high tunnel when I prune to 4 main leaders in the heirloom varieties. I top the plants around July 15th or 6ft to stop all vegetative growth and I also stop feeding them with any nitrogen about July 1st. I also cut way back on the amounts of water the plants receive. That is one big advantage of growing in high tunnels. The days are starting to get shorter after solstice on June 21st so the plants think the season is coming to an end anyways and they go into a semi survival mode and put most of their effort into fruiting. By the end of July, I stop all watering which stresses the plants out even more to the point that we get an amazing amount of fruit through September. I call this technique water stressing and it makes a huge difference. Plus, when the plants are stressed and think they are about to die, they push all of the sugars from the roots into the fruit giving the fruit super sweet flavor. Check out the pics of tomatoes on my FB page, if I can grow tomatoes in Alaska, you surely can grow them where you live. facebook.com/AKSWFtomatoes/?ref=bookmarks

This is a good video about how to top your plants, remember whenever you cut a piece of a plant it's going to tell it to bush out to cover that piece and as a result you'll have more energy going elsewhere. Topping plants properly is the literal difference between getting a kind of crappy harvest with very bad fruits, or a huge amount with super healthy fruits. She's absolutely right about cutting the bottom, the bottoms of plants don't generally take in enough sunlight to be good so once your plant gets a few feet up lollipop it and make sure it's nice and empty at the bottom, than have a lot of clean stems(aka get rid of the suckers). A good way to keep your plants from burning up in the sun and not to over pruning is to try and keep some of the bigger leaves especially the outside ones, they take in the most sun and also provide the most shade. As a rule of thumb though if you see little branches that really aren't going anywhere in the middle cut them off and divert your energy to the fruits.
@VeronicaFlores
@VeronicaFlores 6 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly- suckering is different than topping, as the plant will continue to grow up rather than out. But diverting energy to where a plant needs it is so key to a good harvest, for sure. :)

I've had production tomato growers tell me that once the plant starts to set fruit, you want to prune away all foliage and small stems that start under the fruit, leaving just the main stems. This is to start directing the plant's energy into tomato production instead of leaf and stem production. As the season progresses and more fruit sets higher up and you harvest what's down low, you will progressively prune further up the stem to keep the plant in fruit production mode.

suckers make good rooting candidates. I cut suckers late in the tomato growing season, put them in a container of water until they root, then plant them in soil and move them in the green house for the winter. I currently have 5 ft tall tomato plants with numerous small green tomatoes in the greenhouse. these were g rown from suckers I cut in Oct. 2019. I will plant these in the garden on April 10, 2020.

Pruning seems harsh, but it can be a useful tool in some cases. Good description for tomatoes. Saw your BIL talk. Some of your points reminded me of parts of John and Yoko's song “Born in a Prison”. Yoko is active Twitter. Your approach to garden shows the real soul of an artist, with humor always exploring, wondering, creating and moving forward. Sorry to ask a question here in a 3 year old post. Brandywine Pink Tomato plants have a fragile stem for me. They are [indiscriminate] plants so they grow tall. I am wondering what I am missing here. My plants are 18 - 24" with a few leaves. They grow this way in my garden and produce the best plate tomatoes. How can I slow them down as pre-season plants?

I have a Cherokee Purple heirloom which makes normal suckers but also splits the stem exactly in two as it grows. It also produces a stem/sucker (?) about an inch above where a normal sucker would be and greater than 45 degree angle. I got a very late start so I'm not pruning anything that's not a normal sucker (and bottom foliage), but after removing the first set of blossoms because of the late start I now have 30-40 blossoms beginning to set about 6 tomatoes on 4-5 branches. Should I get rid of anything-blossoms, stems? I'm in a 15 gallon container (and it's crowded because the plant is in here too) :) so not sure if I want to cut some of these main stems or whatever they are that are as thick as the stem but they can't all be stems. Signed, confused but not worried. For worry I got pickle worms destroying container squash plants thanks to late start as well. But I'm killing it with 15 okra plants in containers some Clemson spineless donations and some dwarf long pod. Which is all I wanted anyway, but good succotash is hard to find. Sorry this ran long.Everything organic. It's all on the front porch and the whole neighborhood thinks I'm crazy but I know I am. There is a big difference.
@VeronicaFlores

Always good to keep people thinking you're crazy. ;) I would let it ride or you might not get tomatoes before the season is over- how many days do you have left until frost? If it's branching well and you don't see any issues with development yet, then just keep an eye on it and try and keep foliage trimmed away from the splash zone if at all possible. I let mine ride after the first few rounds of pruning suckers etc. I think the extra foliage up top helps to shade the fruit from sun scald here. YMMV, but... I'll chop it all back a bit in a few weeks to ripen up what's left as it starts to cool again. It all comes down to how much time you have left to play with.

That was (is) some pretty good advice considering you could not see the plant. I ended up trimming down to 5 major branches before I got your reply, but as you suggested I let the rest go. I have until at least mid October, in Atlanta you never know, could be mid Nov. I am loaded up with tomatoes, none are close to ripe but this is an 80-90 day to harvest variety so if I count from when I buried 2/3 of the plant I still have a couple of weeks before that time period. This is not a foliage-centric plant, but it also does not get enough sun to scald about 6-7 hours. It's about 4 feet tall now. I'm not up to speed on making videos but I did post a short one today with the tomato plant and my 14 or so container Okra plants that are doing well considering the late start, (Okra for dinner tonight!). If you have a chance to look I would appreciate the feedback although I know this is a busy time. The squirrel video I posted is hilarious, this guy belongs in Cirque du Soleil, but on this occasion he went home empty handed despite his acrobatic skills and multiple attempts. Jim

I love to grow peppers i always get a lot every season. This past year i decided to plant Tomatoes. Everything went well until i started to get fruit. What happened? Chipmunks eat all the tomatoes. What do you recommend to prevent this from happening again? I noticed that you don't have any type of protection around those plants. I live in NJ, so Chipmunks and Deer are very common to see

These were fenced, but still get munched by squirrels and chickens. Fencing / netting are your best bets.

My Grandfather taught me about suckers but i had no idea about the blight from low leaves. My Grandfather also taught me to bury about a foot of the plant sideways and water the whole length, Have you tried this? Great video, maybe show off your whole garden next video?

I bury deep rather than sideways, but both methods work well!

So maybe stupid question but would it also be possible to prune Black Cherry tomatoes as you dit with the peppers?
@VeronicaFlores
@VeronicaFlores 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't, but you could always try if you're looking for a certain shape. (You'll likely get more from suckering than topping in this case though)

Another great vid. I started my tomatoes too early this spring. My beefmasters are getting too big for the indoor lighting set up I have, haha.

Haha I literally just planted my seeds last week so they're like an inch tall. It's been too cold! And honestly, they always seem to somehow catch up. 🙂

@@VeronicaFlores I was a bit too eager to get the seeds started this year. The year before, I gardened for the first time in years (due to me living in apartments with no garden space). I bought seedlings last year from a local Amish greenhouse. Very affordable. I recommend people in Pennsylvania, Ohio & Indiana go to the Amish greenhouses for fantastic and very reasonably priced plants.

so in the case of what that did not get started up the trellis, can you just take some plastic ties and tie them up? does the plastic wearing against the stem hurt the plant?

I am very novice with farming and pruning..so apologies if I am missing obvious.. but just curious... yesterday I saw your video on pepper pruning which appears we wanted to make the plant grow bushy to get more fruit.. and tomatoes we we are pruning to make it grow taller and reduce the bushy growth.. Is that because the suckers on tomato plant don't give much fruit? Thanks in advance.

Hi Veronica, My 3 tomato plants provide lots of good fruit. It is now August 2020 and there are no more tomatoes However, the plants are still growing and very robust. Will there be a second fruiting or are they done for the year? Thanks Bruce
