Pruning blackcurrant bushes

It's the end of January and the garden is starting to come back to life. The blackcurrant bushes at my Mum's house had got a bit overgrown, in this video I show how pruned them and tidied them up.

This is fab info, I have 2 black and 2 redcurrant bushes at this new place, down at the back behind the greenhouse and they were really badly overgrown, they did produce fruit though. I made some blackcurrant jam earlier this year once I figured out what the heck they were ! It's delicious. The redcurrants didn't really produce anything I could use. They were each at least 6ft tall and wide. I have cut some of the branches out at the base the oldest gnarled ones and did manage to remove one shrub to allow a bit more space back there. Next year I think I need to remove one more. Hopefully they will fruit next year if I haven't removed too much ! This garden hasn't had much attention for a few years but I am enjoying it :) Thanks again Nick.

From your message it sounds like the previous owner of your house really enjoyed their gardening. I'm sure you'll get a good crop of black and red currants, although you might have to net the bushes, as the birds will also enjoy the fruit ;-)

@@UKGardening Yes, Cecil Parkinson's sister and apparently she was a keen gardener, she's in a nursing home now so unfortunately never got to meet her when viewing - I think a gardener was coming in just doing the basics, hedge trim lawns cut etc so it was a bit overgrown in places! Hopefully she would approve of how it's coming along. Good tip about the birds thanks ! I did have one bush with next to no fruit on it that's probably why :) Thanks again for the vids I'll be doing fuchsia's soon I'm keeping an eye on the forecast - your vids really help.

Can you cut down blackcurrant bushes soon after fruiting

Don't cut down all of your blackcurrant bushes, as they fruit on old wood. On established blackcurrants, remove up to a third of the oldest wood, leaving younger stems to carry the fruit next year. If your bushes are three years or younger, prune off up to half of the stems, to encourage new shoots to grow. Usually pruning is left until autumn or winter, when the plants are dormant.
