Thank you for your excellent explanation and demonstration, It was very helpful. It’s crazy how most of the Crape Myrtles we see around the residential areas and public areas have been victims of “Crape Murder” I have never liked that look! you’d think the crews hired to do these jobs would have a minimum knowledge of gardening and proper techniques for pruning and tree maintenance.

Question: Did you mention when is the best time to prune the Crape Myrtle? Some people say after the flowers are gone, and others mention in winter. What do you think?

Here in San Antonio, Texas, the best time to do any hard pruning is late winter/early spring. Around the end of February is generally a good time. If you want to do some light pruning by snipping off the spent flowers at the ends of the limbs once the main blooming period is over, that is okay, but not necessary. It's more of an aesthetic preference. Hope this helps.

My crepe has 2 or 3 main branches in the center that stopped growing flowers after that big freeze in 2021. The branches outside it r fine. I waited a few years to see if anything grew from the main branches but only a few branches appeared growing on the main branches. What do you recommend?

How many main trunks would you have left if the center 2-3 were removed? And what is the diameter of those 2-3 branches? Do you fertilize and what is your sun exposure for the Crape Myrtle?

Yeah, what to cut when the freezing snowy winter kills most the tree? Many new starts at the ground...let them all grow? Wait to thin & prune? Abd japanese Beetles are a plaque this year! What to do?? Never had so much prob with crepe myrtle in the past 🥺
