Excellent video well shot and explained. Just what i needed as I am new to espalier!! It would be great if you could shoot a summer pruning version with the same tree at the same sort of camera angles for comparison :)) Many thanks Subscribed👍

Ok i subscribed but they last time I visited you didn't have a summer pruning video. I've have been relying on summer pruning espalier on the Mike Kincaid channel . It good to see other videos on the same subject to fully understand the subject

I’m a new subbie. Been enjoying your espalier series. May I request a video on your experience by category…ie, most pest resistant, most prettiest fruit, etc…for both pears and apples with photos please. Thank you for sharing your hard work.

Can you cut all the hard branch and start the espalier style with the new grow in the spring?

After pruning, the height is about 1/2 foot. Is there any way to reduce it further? As the years go by, the height of the spur will continue to increase. Can we prune it near to the main branch or renew/refresh the spurs?

Coming to this video 4 years late, but it's just what I was looking for. One question: when in the winter do you do this pruning? Can it be any time in the winter, is it best in the depth of winter, or should I wait until it's closer to spring?
@AllMyHobbies Жыл бұрын
Any time once its fully dormant your good to go. Just do it before the sap starts to flow in the spring

I just got a espalier tree with a good start with 3 horizontal Asian pears varieties. How many years will a flowering branch produce fruit? Do the cordons eventually become supports for the flowering branches?
@AllMyHobbies6 жыл бұрын
Bill Duris if pruned often they the fruit will be close to the cordon for many years. one a fruiting spur is developed it can fruit in the same spot for many years. the man cordons will have small short branches and those branches are likely to be where the fruit is found for years to come.

I'm missing how you differentiate from the vegetative growth and the fruiting spur?
@LandOfTheMiracle14 жыл бұрын
fruiting spur is usually very short growth with fruit bud at the tip or just bud where last years fruit was. Vegetative growth is much longer shoot, more often only with leaf buds and one year growth. Leaf buds are smaller and pointy, fruit buds are rounded and sort of swollen.

I have an espalier apple, and some cherries ... I don't like them, they do not produce that many fruits and I have to cut 1/2 the fruit off in order for them to stay on the tree and ripen. I plan to take cuttings or do air-layering and make real apple trees from all of them as long as they are budding branches and just let the espalier trees grow wild as they want while also trying to keep the branches balanced.
@billduris4646 жыл бұрын
I see that your trees do not have a trellis. Are they necessary for espalier trees of that size?
@AllMyHobbies5 жыл бұрын
I started with a trellis for the first 4 years probably. To keep the shape and hold the fruit up. But they dont need them anymore.
@LandOfTheMiracle14 жыл бұрын
That is why you leave the trellis on, then you dont have to worry about bending the main branch. Btw in commercial orchard we are bending main branches on purpose on apple trees. They are less vigorous and creating more fruit buds. It is all about angles. If I were you I would cut everything from the top of the main branches (that is why they are so growy). Side branches should be at angle 70-90 degrees, almost horizontal. That is how you control growth.
