The Acacia bonsai forest is now 2 1/2 years old and the trees need pruning after a summer of growth. I'm also showing updates to my Ficus benjamina, Ficus microcarpa, Crown of Thorns, Aloe vera, Guava, Tamarind, Desert Ash and my new Avocado bonsai. A busy day in The Bonsai Zone!

Enjoyed watching an update on your trees. I hope that you will make a forest with different varieties of trees. I have one I made with two different types of tropicals. I refer to it as a "park scene". It is a work in progress, but the trees are healthy. It was nice to see your guava and avocado. I can only imagine what you will do with them in the future. Thanks for your video. Always a pleasure to watch them.

Hi Nigel. I have two acacia trees as well. They’re 1 and 2 years old. And I keep them inside all year round. But now that winter has arrived they lost all of their leaves. I’m guessing that they went dormant just like yours. But it’s kind of scary. I can’t see any new buds yet (it’s been at least a week now). Is it really normal for acacias to lose leaves,? I read that they’re evergreens.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it is normal, in South Africa, they go leafless over the winter and the leaves have just returned about a month ago.

Have you ever thought of doing a real Canadian forest? With both Evergreen and deciduous trees typically found in our forests. Cedar, pine, spruce, birch, maple, fir... Funny thing, the trees you call Larch trees, they grow here all over. Since was a child, I've always known them as Fir trees, I had never heard of Larch before your videos. Because of your videos, I learned that there are a few trees that my family/friends/grade school had mislabeled.... Now I'm looking at all the trees I'm teaching my kids about cause, I'm afraid I have been teaching them the wrong names. This has lead to me teaching how to find information themselves using the internet. And that Mommy and Daddy just don't know everything. That it's not a bad thing. It's an opportunity to learn for everyone. How do you do it Nigel? Hahaha! Thanks for all this information! :)

Nigel, concerning those plants with thorns; take a pair of large fingernail clippers or some strong scissors and cut them in half. You'll still have the "look" without the "bite". It'll take a while to do, but they won't regrow the points.

It almost died last winter when I brought it inside. I cut it back in the spring and so far it is limping along. It did sprout some new growth. Any help would be great! Love your show!

Hi Nigel... quick question. Do you keep your Larch forests outside on your benches all winter? I have a larch forest on a rock slab (3 ft x 1 ft) that grew very well this season and seems quite healthy. I'm in Oakville vs you in K-W. Do you think my slab would survive the winter outside in a sheltered location behind my garage that doesn't get much wind, but also not a lot of winter sun?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, I have left the Larch trees outside on the benches for the last two years, but I'm not sure this is the best approach! I did get a couple of branches die over the winter, so I'm thinking it is best to put them in the cold basement for January and February and then put them back outside. If I keep them in the cold basement too long, they come out in leaf too early and the new growth gets killed off when the trees are brought back outside. They should be very frost hardy as they can survive right up to the tree line in the ground. They see temperatures of -45 C at the tree line. I think if the trees have a good established root system, they should survive outside for the winter, but I would protect them from the wind and the rabbits!

@@TheBonsaiZonehanks Nigel. I decided to put mine in the unheated garage along with some of my other trees. I think they should be ok, unless it gets really cold this winter.

I just want to start my first bonsai trees (I have a Jade plant cutting, and a "sunset" jade tree) and I was wondering if your half perlite, half turfuce soil mixture is good for cactus and other succulents also? By the way, I got really confident about starting bonsai trees, back some weeks ago when I started watching you, so thanks a lot! :) (I also got a plant, which I don't know the name of, and looking at it, it doesn't ring a bell. I bought it in a gardening store, and on it's tag is written: Gr. Pf. Stamm. I searched it up, but it didn't show any tree. If you want to help me, I can send you some pictures about the plant.)
