Great video Lyn 😊 I unpotted one of my Lophophora today because it didn’t look too good and didn’t take up water on its first watering, all it’s feeder roots had completely dried up but the tap root still looks ok, no signs of rot. Hopefully it’ll be alright. Great to see you using a similar mix to me with the pumice and lava rock, the Ferocactus will love being in that now 😊 Thank you for sharing with us as always Lyn, from Edith & myself to you and Hans, be safe and well and have a wonderful evening ❤️😊🌵☀️🌺🌸🌼🏜

So happy you enjoyed the video Daz and we are loving the pumice and lava rock so much and we will be using the grit as well with many of our other cacti we will be repotting and I will give your soil mix video and channel a shout out as its a BRILLIANT soil mix, I went through a lot of my other Ferocacti in the polytunnel and changed over the soil to your mix too

I've recently learned that in S.E. Asia its common practice to prune cactus roots everytime they repot them. They'll trim all the roots back to the primary roots. There's a youtuber, The Plant Prince Ph, who has an excellent demonstration of it. he prunes the roots of an Astrophytum in the video but does mention some other species such as Ariocarpus.

I LOVE watching Kim @ThePlantPrincePh videos, he is awesome and I really loved the vids he made of pruning the roots on his Astrophytum, and Kim has really good results from pruning the roots back, thanks so much for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a brilliant Wednesday XXXX

I don't use gloves either, more of a hands on kinda guy I guess. Have been known to use an old towel or old t shirt around one if it's too spiney. My large old Ariocarpus retusus lost its roots last year due to peat in my cactus mix. Burnt the roots off the caudex. Had to do the same as you have done. Repotted in a dolomite mix , treated the caudex with rooting powder & mixed in a little with the soil and it has since rerooted. I've had cacti bark up like that too, I notice lophos do this quite common, mine have done this , grown out of it. Then years later may come back. I did some reading on this and the reason is unknown as you said, it's said to occur on greenhouse plants more than out door plants. Who knows?🤔From Morris park in the Ozarks to across the Emerald isle, have a great Wednesday and best of luck rerooting! Peace,Love,Plants!!!!✌💖🌵🌸🌴🌹🌿

haha so happy you like to not wear gloves when re potting too Clyde :-D I think we must have leather hands by now :-D Well done on saving your large Ariocarpus retusus too, I hate peat and all our new cacti we have bought last year are all potted up in it and I will b going through them all and removing it and potting up in this new soil mix too, peat seems to stick to the roots like cardboard and its so hard to remove from the roots without damaging them, and root mealies and fungus gnats love peat arghhhh, although /i use added peat with the epiphytic cacti but I hate it on the Desert ones haha, yes the scabbiness on these cacti is a mystery and its been like this for so long that I now its not a killer but I dont think this Fero would win any beauty contests haha

Hi Lyn! very interesting video on how to prune dead roots of Cactus! It is very helpful! Is it normal to be so dried up after winter...that is without water? Thanks Lyn! Have a beautiful evening Lyn and Hans! We still have to be safe as the virus is still on! Sending you both lots of love!

So glad you filmed this Lyn and as I found this very interesting! I probably would have thrown the cactus away as would have assumed it had no chance. Luckily these roots had not rotted but had they done and rot had gone into the cactus, would you have done an emergency cut at the bottom and let it calice over? Would the cactus then grow new roots from the emergency cut? Fantastic camera work by Hans 👍🏻 sending you heaps of love xxx

Some of my big prickly pear cactus is brown and scabby looking at the base . When people ask me why I tell them it had a bad case of acne when it was going through puberty. Before I saw this vid I was in my greenhouse repotting and clipping some roots,,,,syncronicity👍🙂

Hi Lyn, I wanted to repot my healthy looking rainbow burst cactus but when I carefully pinched to loosen the soil, 2/3 of the roots fell off. Should I water off the rest of the soil, trim dead, dry for a week then repot? I am newbie.
@desertplantsofavalon2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes its best to trim off any of the dead roots and remove the soil, then let the roots fully dry for a week to allow the cut roots to fully 'callus' and then repot into dry soil and leave the cactus unwatered for another three weeks before you start to water again, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

Can i do this any time of the year? I have 3 succulents that look dried out and i bet it's dried out roots. Or should i wait for spring over 6 months ..?
@desertplantsofavalon3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, you can do this at any time of year if the plant has roots that are dried out, but if you prune the roots in Winter its best to pot back up into dry soil and keep unwatered until the Spring, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday XXXX
