In many ways it's like Jacques Brel's NE ME QUITTE PAS, about love so deep, so sad, so frustrated, with all the self-hate that goes along with such intense feelings. In Ne Me Quitte pas, Brel says: "I'll be the shadow of your hand, the shadow of your dog" to express the desperation of unrequited, or unevenly-requited love. Ginette Reno made a career of such songs too.

Great Reaction!!! She is soul crushing. She crushes us all. Repeatedly. She is a Sorceress Queen, she puts us under a spell and then plays with our emotions at will. We are mesmerized. Spellbound...unable to get out of Lara's world. And when the song is over - we start it over and play it again. We search for and listen to her body of work, we tell our friends, we share her art. And then? We come and watch reactions to her videos trying to recapture the moment it happened to us. For it was so sweet, so sublime, game-changing. Millions can tell you how they feel cheated, sickened, that they did not discover Lara sooner...I am counted in that group. She IS the Sorcerer Queen, long may she reign. @@philpiper @PrymalChaos Thanks for responding Prymal and Phil. In 35 years of being an amatuer musician and all around music nut, two personal observations. Only two artists have made me cry, consistently, very nearly just by the sound of their voice. Luciano Pavarotti and Lara Fabian. The first I discovered nearly 40 years ago and still adore. Lara, the Queen, long may she reign, I discovered a little over a year ago and like I said, I am sickened by what I had been missing. My first reaction to her was very very powerful to be sure, but what added to it was this sense of "Why did it take so long for me to find her?" Enjoy Prymal, you will be in life long relationship with Lara, I guarantee it....but I sense you already know that.

Believe it or not but this is only a cover. The song is a famous french classic from 1973 by Serge Lama (lyrics and original performer) and Alice Dona (music) But her cover has become the ultimate reference, she made some adjustments that even Serge Lama adopter in her later own interpretations. They stood up in unison even before the song was over because they wanted desperately to let her know what they thought of her performance. When was she recognized as a "singer?" Well, one day, she was in the backseat of the family car. Her father was driving and all of a sudden Lara burst out in song and papa couldn't believe what he was listening to! How do I know that? Lara told us that story when she was being interviewed. Lara the Incomparable - every performance a professional singers Master Class. Good call not to interrupt the flow. No-one else does love & loss with the sensitivity & muance of Lara. You are right about the 'theatre'. Lara brings every shred of her outstanding artistry to each performance - she thoroughly embodies the story - with micro-intentionality to every note, every pause & yes; every breath between. Lara is classically trained & can breath imperceptibly when/ where ever she chooses. Here she chooses to insert audible breaths to enhance the emotional delivery. The extent to which she 'inhabits' the piece is revealed in the time it takes for her to pull back to the present at the end. As for whose story this is, because of the intensity of her performance some have concluded that this is her story, and while Lara acknowledges she has had her share of heartbreak, this is not 'her' song. It was written by a friend of hers, a male singer / songwriter who was, at the time, in despair about a long affair he was having with a married lover. To my mind this further underlines the level of her skill. Her 'Caruso' is stunning, { I doubt anyone has -or ever will - do better } but if you need an 'uplift' after this one - you cannot go past her 2001 Paris performance of Je taime. Enjoy. 😊
@PrymalChaos2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! "Micro-Intentionality" is a perfect description. I feel like you can't write a song with this much breadth of emotional anguish without having experienced it first hand. @@PrymalChaos Allegedly - the couple did eventually get together, but sadly, it didn't last. The old adage of 'Be careful what you wish for'? All too often the romanticised idealised version doesn't 'marry up' to the day to day mundane nuts & bolts of the reality. [ This is where the Victorian Tradition of a minimum of 2 year Engagement makes a lot of common sense! Well and truly past the 12 - 18 month 'Honeymoon Phase'. ] And where the bulk of the attraction resides in the illicit thrill - well.. the outcome's kinda predictable...

Posting again the information on Lara Fabian: Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, .... In my personal opinion, she is even the best. There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register. So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence: • she speaks 4 languages fluently (french, italian, english, spanish) and has sung in 12 languages in total • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for most her songs, in the 4 languages she speaks. She often co-composes the music with the composer. • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens A quick background on her and her career: She is belgian, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia). She was raised in both countries so she speaks both french and italian as native languages. She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory. She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today. She started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada. She now lives in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship She became very famous there and then conquered France in 1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music). in 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, reached number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US. This concert is legendary and the song you just reviewed is from this concert. But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan. She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Asia where she became an absolute superstar thru her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years. She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace" used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera topped the charts for months. Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban, … With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there. Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA is now rediscovering her. She is Dimash's idol: I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep. He covered many of her songs (that she performed originally ; she also wrote some of these) Out of my mind I can list: • Adagio, • Mademoiselle Hyde, • Know, • Love of tired swans, She also wrote the lyrics of his song « Your Love ». She covered « Love is like a dream » before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva) And they performed Ti Amo Cosi together with Aida Garafulina. This is a song that she performed originally with Dmitriy Hvorostovsky and Alina Yaroyava then again later with Dmitriy and Sumi Jo, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida. Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy who came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him. Many other top vocalists from the current generation covered her songs: • Floor Jansen (Adagio) • Polina Gagarina (Adagio, Je t’aime) • Diana Ankudinova (Tomorrow is a lie) • Morissette Amon (Broken Vow) • Gabriel Henrique (Love by Grace) • Cakra Khan (Broken Vow) • Katrina Velarde (Broken Vow) • Giulia Falcone (Adagio, Caruso, Je suis malade) • .... Sorry if I was long, but I hope this gives some context on Lara. If you explore more of her songs, you will soon be hooked, I'm sure.

Translation in english for lyrics that are very important in this song: I AM ILL I don't dream anymore I don't smoke anymore I don't even have a story anymore I'm ugly without you I'm dirty without you Like an orphan in a dormitory I don't want To live my life anymore My life stops when you leave I don't have a life anymore And even my bed Becomes a station platform When you leave... I'm ill - Completely ill Like when my mother went out in the evening And she left me alone with my despair I'm ill - Perfectly ill You arrive but you never know when You start again but you never know where And you'll have soon been doing that for 2 years Yet you don't care Like a rock Like a sin I'm attracted to you I'm tired, I'm exhausted Of pretending to be happy When they're there I drink every night And every whisky Has the same taste to me And every boat Wears your flag I don't know where to go anymore, you're everywhere I'm ill Completely ill I shed my blood in your body And I'm like a dead bird When you sleep I'm ill Perfectly ill You deprived me of all my songs You emptied me of all my words Yet I did have talent Before your skin... This love's killing me If it continues I'll die on my own Next to my radio Like a stupid child I'll listen to your own, own voice that sings to me I'm ill Completely ill Like when my mother went out one evening And she left me alone with my despair I'm ill This is it, I'm ill You deprived me of all my song You emptied me of all my words And I have a heart that's completely ill Surrounded by fences You hear... I'm ill... Source: muzikum.eu/en/lara-fabian/je-suis-malade-lyrics-english-translation

"I'm ill" is the most direct English translation, but it fails completely to convey the emotional connotations which "je suis malade" has in French. "I'm at the end of my rope", or "I can't bear this pain any more" obviously won't work because those phrases are too long, but they do get closer to the correct emotions. Perhaps "I'm spent" is a good short phrase which conveys the exhaustion and exasperation of the French - "I'm spent. Completely spent. Perfectly spent."

One thing that nobody with Vocal training seems to notice or at least do not point out at all is the fact that Lara may 'interrupt' a note but does not breathe before she sings the next few words. Then, here and there, she breathes quickly between two words, both for musical and technical reasons. Also, in some instances, more obviously at the beginning of the song, the sound of the breath portrays the emotion, is the emotion. Just for this song, for a long show taped for television, she had prepared for countless hours.That is the huge difference between a singer, millions of them, and a performer, an "interprète" (to use the French word). One sings words and notes ; the later brings to life to each syllable and projects each note with a definite intention.

@@PrymalChaos I could have added that she breathes in tempo. That is a characteristic we shall not take for granted. Years ago, I accompanied a female singer twice a week, plus rehearsals, for four months. I forced her to breathe in tempo. She had good rhythm overall but at first, she could not do it. When I also asked her to tap the pulse on the piano and sings at the same time, she could not. I had her sing our rehearsal to the metronome next to her. When she improved, I let her free to move the barline but she had to remain aware of the intrinsic pulse. She became way more expressive and fluid... Eventually, she thanked me. **** To add to what I said above, I used to mention Lara to fellow musicians as one of the few singers who can sing long phrases, like a classical violonist for instance would do, in comparison to most singers - and instrumentalists - who just breathe because they physically need to. By the way, I was compelled to share my thoughts from your observation from 13'10. Between 13'10 - 13'20, she breathes only twice, exceptionally after the word "vie" (je n'ai plus de vie). She stops the notes but does not breathe ; this is quite evocative of an emotion that resonates through time, and technically, she sings in long archs. As we should all do...

Something to keep in mind is that the lyrics of this song were originally written by a man (Serge Lama) who was truly living through this story at that time (1972). That explains a bit, especially the verse "I pour my blood in your body" which is an allegory for sexual intercourse.

It seems nobody told you what is the story behind this song, so here it is: Serge Lama (a french Singer - song writer of this song) was in love with a woman. But... both of them were married... One day, he said to her "ok, let's leave our conjoint and let's marry", and she said "yes". But the very next day, she left with her husband in africa (morroco AFAIR). This lead Serge into a complete sadness. He told this story to a woman, and a couple of day after she contact him to say she found a musical for this story, and when Serge heard this music, he cried and wrote straight away the lyrics of the song. So he released the song, and sang it. But... the audience was not that enthusiastic about it... So one day, Dalida (another french singer) sang it and... it was a triumph. The former woman he was in love with heard this song, left her husband and married Serge. And afterward, Lara Sang this song. IMHO, this version is the best one.
