It has epic story :D SPOILERS DOWN THERE!!! So if I get it right, before they woke up in the rooms/classrooms, one year passed. Ofcourse they weren't sleeping, but living normal school life... Then they got amnesia somehow... ask Monokuma, and they woke up. That's why the photos were there (In the anime/animation series)

They were brainwashed by Junko by using the ultimate neurologist, Yasuke Matsuda’s research, then the 15 students, except Junko and Mukoro, were brainwashed, removing 1 year worth of memories.
