My favorite hidden gem for PS1 was called 'blazing dragons'. It's a simple game, made for a younger audience, but you can't go wrong with Cheech Marin and John Cleese as voices in the same game. I was in my 20s when I found it, and played the heck out of it because it was just absolutely hilarious, I didn't care if it was made for someone half my age, the comedy was just spot on

Fun fact about Ghost in the Shell on PS1. I had a demo disk that came with Spyro the Dragon. Winter Releases '98 I believe it was called. When I booted it up I was met with this psykodelic kalleidoscope main menu that confused me so much I had no idea it WAS a menu, so instead of using the direction keys to cycle between games I would immediately hit X in order to "move on" as I believed this was but a mere pause screen that I needed to get past. This meant that every single time I booted up this disk I would inadvertedly boot up Ghost in the Shell as it was the first game highlighted on the menu, which led me to believe that the entire "Winter Releases '98" disk was only a demo for that one game. It wasn't until 20 years later, popping it in just for fun, that I stopped up and realized there were more demos on it.

Vigilant 8 and vigilant 8 the 2nd offense were a perfect vehicle combat games. Everyone talks about twisted metal but nobody ever mentions vigilant 8, although V8 had a superior physics, graphics, weapons, vehicles, special weapons, stages design and missions in story mode, and not to forget the vehicles upgrades in the 2nd installment.

I made it, Mr. Connery. In my experience growing up I really got into a PS1 game called Rogue Trip which was a twisted metal clone. Honestly I thought it was better than twisted metal and put so much time into the campaign with a friend. Taking out the last boss was a challenge and we were thrilled when we finally beat Big Daddy.

The best part about that era is that developers and publishers had no idea of what they were doing so some weird projects seemed to get a good enough budget to shape itself into an interesting game. So many weird games on the PS1.

gosh i TRIED to love this game. I played it not "back then" but 4 years ago for the first time and... i really couldn't care less for most of the Characters. The "plot twist" of one character dying is already clear as soon as another character with basically the same cloth colour and weapon steps into the game It looked nice though
@xelthos2051Ай бұрын
@@Zanji1234it's a nostalgia game for sure. Basing it on today's standards, it's generic and predictable. Very few people will ever enjoy older games they didn't have some nostalgia for growing up. Playing it when it first came out though, it was a lot of fun and unique to have an active combat element in a turn based jrpg.
@Zanji1234Ай бұрын
@@xelthos2051 i didn't compared it to "todays standard" i mean i played other RPGs von the PSX for the first time there too. And compared to for example Legend of Legaia the story was ... kinda rushed??

Love Ninja: Shadow of Darkness! I grew up with that game and I'm honestly surprised it's not mode widely known given the developers. As for hidden gems, I think far too many people neglect the amazing Japan-exclusive PS1 library. My go-to recommendations are the fighting game _Shaman King: Spirit Of Shamans_ and the beat-em-up _Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger_ (both from Bandai I believe). Both are licensed games from the very tail end of the console's lifespan, and as such are quite good-looking titles. There's great recommendations on other genres, but the language barrier makes them hard to recommend to everyone.

@nukepineislandАй бұрын
Return Fire was an absolute blast to play against friends with, the classical music and the rock paper scissors vehicle combat were a perfect pairing. While on the subject of competitive gaming the PSX link cable was one of the earliest forms of LAN console gaming and a list of the games that used it best would be rad. DOOM and Command and Conquer Red Alert : Retaliation would have to be included IMO "A-BOMB LAUNCH DETECTED"
@TheMoviesCultАй бұрын
Can't agree more about Return Fire, actually came here just to remind Cultured Vultures about it! That's the most fun I've had in 2-player mode along with Twisted Metal. Even the single player mode deserves plaudits, as you alter your strategy depending on the route you choose and the variety of inspired maps keeps you going for hours. It came out first on 3DO but we were lucky to get a port. Quite possibly the best "capture the flag" game I've ever played.

As first thing, cool video as always. There's an urban legend that circulated in some parts here in Italy about Overboard: the game was so unusual to find in stores that most of us believed (so many kids spread the lie) that it was just a demo version of an unreleased game. Then, it appared as a full game but in the pirate market only (funny thing for a game focused on pirates), something that led many of us to believe even more about the theory of an unreleased game like "Thrill Kill". The game became more common in stores during the late 1999. I can recommend you four additional hidden gems too! Rapid Racer - A phenomenal arcade racer featuring powerboats with stunning water effects known as VR Sports Powerboat Racing in the US. Ray Tracers - Made by Taito, it was a very short but enjoyable 3-D follow-up to Chase HQ. Zero Divide 2 - A Virtua Fighter-like fighting game between robots with very fast gameplay, cool graphics and smooth animations. Cardinal Syn - A nice fantasy-themed fighting game with creepy characters, an orchestral soundtrack of amazing proportions and a lot of blood during combats. All of these games had something in common back in the day: they got very poor reviews, but only because they were forced to compete against the usual standards of that era like Tekken 3 or Ridge Racer. Some reviewers back in the day simply had no real idea about how to develop a real review...

I think it came on the same demo as Treasures of the Deep which was an amazing game and a hidden gem. I'm glad Ninja: Shadow of Darkness got mentioned, I love that game. Life Force Tenka came on the first demo disc that came with the Playstation I think. Think it had games like Cardinal Sin and Battle Arena Toshiden on.
