The games on ps1 had a lot more personality to them as well thanks to the extra memory. By hearing how the characters talk; whether it’s Spyro being a little badass, or Solid Snake being a total badass, it immersed me into those games. Super Mario 64 has you read a whole ass novel throughout. I don’t wanna read, I wanna kick Gnasty Gnorcs ass!

Someone else mentioned how it ultimately comes down to what kind of games you prefer and I definitely think that is a very true statement. I grew up with the PS1 as that was my first ever console during the 90s and I didn't get to play much of the N64 back in those days and even when I did, I mostly only played Super Smash Bros 64, Mario Kart 64, and Diddy Kong Racing. When I look at which console had more games that I enjoyed, the PS1 took the cake because it had more of the type of games that I enjoy which are 3D Platformers, 3D Fighting, Action-Adventure, and Survival Horror. The N64 did have slightly more 3D platformers and I won't deny that when I finally did get around to playing Legend of Zelda OOT and enjoyed the experience, the PS1 still had more titles that peaked my interest more. And finally, I just wasn't hugely into multiplayer style games and usually was more of a single-player kind of gamer. Not to say that I didn't enjoy playing games with others, just that I could take it or leave it is all lol. As for the controller debate, I do agree that the PS1 controller with analog sticks was fundamentally better than N64's controller and I'm bias in saying that the Playstation controller is the most comfortable controller of all consoles. Though I will also agree that while the PS1 had the more interesting games, the design of the console itself was definitely not as eye catching as the N64, especially when the N64 ended up getting all kinds of cool "glacier" color styles. So for me the PS1 would get my vote however I still look back fondly on the N64 as well and I loved seeing both consoles all over the place back in the day.

I had both videogames and personally the one that truly gives me nostalgia is the 64. I was a child, so I didn't really care about technical aspects, only about having fun. And I have to say, N64 games are some of the most amazing games I've played. They were just so full of life, so original, whereas the PS1 games, despite being more realistic, were games you could find for PC as well. But in the end it's a matter of taste.

The really main reason why the PS1 won was because how open and welcoming it was to third party devs and newcomers. Games like Crash and Spyro would've never be made on the n64 due to Nintendo's strict and traditional ways, unless you were a well known or rich developer Nintendo wouldn't even look at you let alone sell you a dev kit and help create the game which Sony was the complete opposite.

Wow. I know there are a lot of other people that either prefer the PS1 over the N64 for good reasons other than to be “Sony fanboys” and actually respect opinions even if they think the N64 wins, but let’s talk about the people in the comment section labelling us as “nostalgia-blinded N64 haters” just because while we like (or at least respect and give credit to) the N64, we also like the PS1 as much (or even more and there is nothing wrong with that). You can prefer the Nintendo 64 over the PlayStation all you want, that’s all a matter of personal preference. But please, stop trying to make it sound like a *fact* that the PlayStation 1 is “the worse console” and let SlayerCoon have an opinion because I think he made a lot of strong points to prefer the PS1 (he cannot change his opinion and I like that he’s being real about it, yet some people in the comment section decided to give him sexist insults for speaking out his opinion like “gem oh” and “feminine hips”). Again, like the N64 over the PS1 all you want or better yet, have no comparison and love or at least respect both console. But please, STOP demonizing the PlayStation 1 and the people that love and respect it as if it had a lot to offer (which it did) and realize that while consoles can have either good or bad games, the PS1 games, while it also has bad games (re: the indefensible Bubsy 3D, but the N64 also has Superman 64, and I would go on about more N64 games I don’t love. But if I do, I’m worried that it might even be games a lot of people like, let alone love. I guess I could give a few examples, like the Zelda games which like DK64 and Goldeneye 007, it’s not my go-to game, but I respect them though objectively prefer the 3DS versions for smoothing out already intriguing experiences.) have a lot of classics and the reasons why people love it is because it does, in fact, have a lot of classics, like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Tekken 3, Toy Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2, Gran Turismo 1 & 2, Tekken 1-3, Soul Edge, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7-9, Tomb Raider 1-3, Pac-Man World, Crash Bandicoot 1-3, Crash Team Racing, Spyro 1-3, the List really goes on. And I too know good games for the N64 when I see them (Diddy Kong Racing, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Perfect Dark, Paper Mario, Super Mario 64, Mischief Makers, Wave Race 64, the Bomberman games, Star Fox 64, F-Zero X, Banjo-Kazooie, the list goes on), but please! SlayerCoon can prefer the PlayStation 1 over the N64 all he wants (while also giving the N64 credit where credit is due instead of treating it like a “Nintendo fanboy” thing to like the N64, just as long as we’re civil about it because I think both consoles can have their strengths and weaknesses. Especially the PS1 when it comes to strengths, but that’s my opinion and SlayerCoon’s and he did bring up a lot of good points to why he didn’t like the N64 while giving it credit for its superior design and not putting down the PS1 like a lot of people just love to do in many sources on the Internet and during the console wars of the 1990s when more people would win the N64 wars and lose the PS1 wars even though it hurts me who personally prefers the PS1. Like, am I not allowed to have my own opinions as well? On the topic of other consoles, am I also not allowed to think the problem with the 3DO is that it literally called our other favourite consoles like the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis “baby toys”?! Because while I love these two consoles, not loving them is subjective. But while you could praise the 3DO, another fifth-gen console for its technical aspects, you cannot act like it was right to belittle the other consoles!), it’s his opinion, not your right to judge him just because he’s “biased” or whatever (I’m sure we all have biases on our own, but it’s not an insult. It’s just how we are when we find great things). I’m not trying to be salty or anything, I’m just trying to reassure that while it is okay to praise the N64, maybe even more than I do, it’s NOT okay to treat the PlayStation 1 like it’s a lesser-than console when it’s all down to subjectivity which consoles we prefer. Like, I think the PS1 is great for more reasons than just nostalgia. I love its CD compatibility, its visuals (I prefer them over the N64’s, but then again, that’s mainly just my personal preference), its music, its variety, its success, its aforementioned library of memorable games (I also mentioned that the N64 has good/popular games), its controller (and no, just because there are people who don’t like playing with the N64’s analog stick doesn’t mean they just need to “get good”. Have you heard of the Mario Party 1 incident where a lot of people’s thumbs began to hurt just after they played that game?!), etc.

I chose the PS1 over the N64 because it had the games I wanted to play. 98% of them were on the PS1. That said, the grass is greener on the other side. I would have given up higher quality and quantity multimedia content for shorter load times and textures that don't flutter like a flag in the wind. Plus CDs are so freaking fragile and they decay. I appreciate Slayercoon's review but in my opinion the score should have been a lot closer to a tie with the deciding factor on the buyer's preference. Both systems have their good and bad points and we should just appreciate them for what they are without having to put one or the other on a pedestal.

I haven't watched this video yet... and I don't need to; PS1 has over 7000 games, the N64 has 388. I like them both but at the end of the day that is an insane amount of games. Most the games on N64 are also on PS1, and a good deal of those are arguably better on PS1. As an aside the PS1 had I think 2x drives, the PS2 was 24x (for CD), I don't know how much faster it actually loads, but it is faster (you have to enable fast load). Plus you can mod ur PS2 and install them to HDD, or purchase digitally for PSP/PS3 and up, or emulate. CDs are fragile... yes , but I've never so much as given a game a hairline scratch even as a child (unless you count the 360 lens attacking my poor halo game). I've also never exposed my game to heat (causing warpage). nonetheless I've purchased most my games second hand from far less diligent people. CD rot it inevitable, thankfully none of my games have gotten it. Carts certainly aren't invincible (leaky caps etc), but yeah they have more longevity. Ultimately even our beautiful consoles will die out, emulation needs to be protected.

I really liked the video, but one correction is that Nintendo didn't forego CD technology on the N64 because they were stuck in there ways, they had initially planned on having a disc drive. They were working with Sony to make the Nintendo Playstation; there is at least one working prototype that some people managed to reverse engineer and pull data from. They ended up having problems and broke away. Nintendo had also tried to working with Philips for the SNES, and that fell through... giving us the Philips-CDi and the unholy triforce of non-Nintendo Zelda games.

Controllers should have been a tie. When the N64 has a tight stick, it's generally more responsive than the PS1 sticks, and it lacks drifting. Plus, in the last few years, I have encountered analogue calibration problems with certain games depending on the controller. I have two PSone controllers and one PlayStation controller. The first two Spyro games feel solid with the former but imprecise with the latter. "Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters", however, has a sticky, buggy feel when using the former but is perfectly fine when using the latter. On average, I have less frustrating control problems on the N64, but the issues I have with play control on the PS1 are exclusive to a few games, and the worst-case scenario doesn't see me going out and buying more controllers. Of all the game consoles I own, the Sega Dreamcast has provided the best and most consistent experience with controlling 3D games. There's no drift, the stick feels nice, and the sensitivity is on-point. If only all modern game controllers had all three of these qualities, our pockets would be burning less often.

I love both systems and the Saturn as each of these consoles provide awesome exclusive content. N64 had the most genre defining games but had the smallest library and least variety. PS1 had more variety and content, CD allowing for more diverse 'graphics', superior audio, fmv and rpg games. Technically N64 is the most powerful by a country mile, however, Nintendos refusal to go CD forcing devs to use tiny 8MB carts, provision of piss poor dev kits that even in their final incarnation didn't make use of the hardware due to Nintendos refusing to allow access to the N64s biggest feature - writing per game custom microcode and forcing use of the generic SGI code (which was intended for tech demos not games) and severing ties with most of the games industry shot themselves in the foot big time.

something I don't usually see people saying when evaluating the ps1 is that a lot of its games degraded after some use or simply got broken. The CD's are fragile and gamers weren't all that used to them. I remember that everyone who had a ps1 also had a couple of broken games and had to frequently think about "polishing" them to make them work. N64 cartridges though hold less data, are more robust.

Whereas the N64 had great wrestling games, platformers, and multiplayer games. Nintendo sticking to cartridges was still the biggest mistake they made with the system as that made them lose 3rd party support from Capcom, Konami, and especially Square.

I've had both, I had a PS1 when I was 7 and got an N64 later on down the line in my 20's. I still own the N64 and I really enjoy it. I actually love the controller, it's quirky and not actually that bad to use. You can buy different types of controller if you really find it that terrible. The original PS1 controller was immediately made rubbish as soon as Dual Shock came about. The original PS1 controller feels like a flimsy POS to this day. I like the quick loading of having a cartridge system. I like how the graphics are "smoother" and faster than the PS1. I like how the N64 totally dicks the PS1 at multiplayer out of the box. I like the fact the N64 is now more collectable than the PS1 and by extension my N64 (and SNES(the Euro one which looks better than that American travesty)) get a LOT more attention by visitors to my place than my array of PlayStations. Mega Drive/Genesis is next on my list to buy. There are more non family friendly games for it than you let on. You very much portray the N64 in a far more negative light than it deserves. At least you admitted your bias as the end but not being funny, you went in to this with no intention of letting the N64 win so what was the point?

"slight graphical adventages", damn dude you don't know at all what you're talking about here. even people prefering PS1 would not say this as they usually liked it more because the number of games or certain games gameplays, some would say that the ps1 view was more clear cause of no AA but that was only true from a good distance while not moving. PS1 had no real 3d unlike 64 wich is a huge feat in it self, so ps1 had shaky textures, even shaky polygon lines (vertices) no AA, so lot of big pixels, could suport much less polygons per frames etc in fall 98 which mark the point where the PC finally did catch up with the N96 we got Forsaken and Turok 2 which both featured Dynamic Lighting (you could shot a projectile and it would illuminate the surroundings as it go), which the PS1 was not able to produce. As of what I just memtionned needed much power power and technologies. Don't forget the N64 was made from a scalled down version of a Silicon graphic board that did value 10000$ btw even in your emulation we still se the shaky texture/vertices warps Honestly the only one drawback of the N64 was not the cartrige itself but the fact the the cost of the ROM memory at the time not allowed for much of it put in the cartrige, around 35MB in the first year up to nearly 100MB toward the end or with some AAA titles, like Mario 64 VS Zelda Oot, holding both in hands did show the difference of weight. The 64 have the sounds capability to play CD quality just not enought rom in the cartridgle to load it. that was the main argument to make the 64DD which would have removed this drawback. Damn I'm still defending that after more than 20 years I guess our teenage years stay sacred regardless hahaha

There were benefits to using the cartridge format, such as helping devs avoid the need to store any textures on the tiny texture cache and avoid the need to use RDRAM, which offered higher data bandwidth at the cost of horrible latency. Later N64 games resorted to storing uncompressed textures onto the cartridge and data access was very quick compared to reading from ram. The cartridge format wasn’t as bad as the media often portrays it to be. Lastly, FMW very much took up too much storage space for even a single disc to store, though storage sizes only mattered if you planned to use a bunch of FMW clips onto your unreleased software and many PS1 games are the same size as N64 if you remove FMW.

@@Yvory6 If anything, I’m honestly sick and tired of folks using cartridges as a scrap goat excuse for why third party games performed worse and/or was what made the system challenging to code for. Cartridges were the least concerning factor of the N64, with storage being expensive for sure, but there were bigger issues with the N64, with one of the biggest bottleneck of the N64 was how Nintendo shots themselves in the foot for not giving developers proper documentation of the fully programmable GPU which is often touted as the first consumer grade GPU that is fully programmable, and why Nintendo didn’t allow developers to customize Microcode early on is beyond me. At least later on they caved in, but I imagine with proper documentation the system would have gotten a better reputation with third party programmers.

PS1 had a greater number of games and more mature games but in terms of top rated games ony, N64 wins by large. In my experience the average guy did not really full-play neither a half of all the mediocre games included in the PS1 mod. Generally speaking playing 5 to 20 games is more than enough in a console life cicle. Having a (even limited) roster of well-known brands and top quality games with strong multiplayer, as Nintendo has, helps a lot the consumer in making a family choice. The PS1 won because of the price and because of the mod (not surprisingly, the DS and Wii used the same strategy of PS1 - being cheaper and moddable - and won the console war). All the greatest PS1 games (GT, Metal Gear, FF) were not easy to approach for many young people and children did not enjoyed them (they were rather be playing Game Boy).

More powerfull Cpu and Gpu (reality processor) Ps1 have 2 mb ram for graphic and 1mb for sound. the 64 had 4 mb for both so it acted like Computers with "general" ram. also that ram could be expended to 8MB. Also the only one to feature real 3D so it had no shaky polygons and textures as we move. It had an hardware AA ensuring no ugly pixels like the Saturn or PS1. Both it power and the Cartridges fast loading ensured that it could have some fast paced game that the 2 other consoles coule not run, such as Extreme G and some others racing or flight games. I remember when they did try to do shines effects on cars in grand turismo 2, it was a mess of white pixel whereas shine effects on let say Top Gear Overdrive was looking awesome.

Also the tech specs should’ve have been a tie, the cartridge though mostly disadvantaged due to the lack of storage space did have many advantages, from being able to stream textures and other data directly from the cartridge and also allowed load times to be nearly non existent. If the N64 used CDs: Games like Goldeneye 007 wouldn’t exist and the price of the system would have been too expensive at a whopping potential $450 price tag. Memory ram was very limited and expensive back in the mid 90s, so RDRAM which is found on the N64 was used because of it’s lower price and simpler design that offered higher bandwidth but at the cost of horrible latency. Later games on the N64 resorted to storing uncompressed textures onto the cartridge over ram or texture cache because the format was amazingly fast to access, and adding a CD drive instead would have only complicated it’s already over architecture nature. Not to mention that games could boot on the fly without being completely reliant on memory ram to boot into the game, a trait the PS1 suffers with only 2MB of ram pool initially available, but devs had less ram to work with due to the nature of CDs needing to be read than written onto memory, leaving devs less memory to work with. It doesn’t help that it never had the option to expand memory either like how the N64 and Sega Saturn offered (Japan only for Saturn.)

N64 is a joke. Zelda? Mario 64? Banjo Kazooei? Get those overhyped garbage off my face. I'd rather play Xenogears, legend of dragoon, FF7, FF9, Tekken, metal gear solid, Super robot wars alpha gaiden and all other classic Ps1 games than those.

N64 was better. Incredible new 3D games that brought you into worlds you never thought were imaginable. Cartridges are knocked today but then we loved them because they were super fast and built extremely well.

In the UK the price of N64 was extortionate. There were way more top games on Sony's console it's not even close

@@mdluk199 Name games that won interactive achievement awards on PS1. I’ll wait. Let me know when you need the list of N64 games that did. Sony had some cool games. Metal Gear, Tomb Raider and Gran Turismo to name a few. But it never had Zelda, Goldeneye, Star Fox, Wave Race, Perfect Dark caliber games.

@@earlusmcdivett @earlusmcdivett The PSone's library obliterates that of the N64 it's not even close. The N64 had a handful of good games the PSone had dozens in every genre. 3rd party's virtually ignored the N64 and games were way more expensive than PSone games. That's one of the reasons the PlayStation massacred the N64 in sales. Resident Evil 1,2,3, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7&8, Wipeout, Parappa the rapper, Tomb Raider 1,2,3, Syphon Filter 1,2,3, Dino Crisis 1&2, Silent Hill, Gran Turismo 1 & 2, Twisted Metal, Crash 1,2,3 & team racing, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver, Tekken 3, Ridge Raver Type 4, Castlevania symphony of the night, Medal of honour & Oddworld. I could easily mention lots more & PlayStation had all the best sports games also. The PlayStation was the king of that generation by a country mile

There is not even a competition are you kidding? The only thing ps1 is "better" is the amount of games. Anything else is just a runover by n64. It is a shame to even compare them

Did you know: Many PS1 games are about the same size as N64 games? If you remove the FMW clips, many PS1 games become N64 sized.

What a stupid comparison. Yeah, PS1 have FMVs, and that makes them better. What's your point?

@@Daniel_Rodrigues_89 If you’re fond of watching movies, great. But I prefer solid gameplay over flashy live action scenes. Sure you can have both, but gameplay matters more than simple FMVs that the industry has long since abandoned ever since hardware has gotten progressively more powerful to render scenes on the go.
