This video seems to have exploded unexpectedly for me and I want to address the feedback. The point of this video was to discuss the very broad revisions for a general consumer. If I had the money, resources and time I would hunt down all 16 motherboard revisions, study them and do a one hour long video. But sadly I don't. Plus I live in regional Australian, so everything isn't readily available for me. I also didn't want to tackle the modding scene or development tool due to it being a grey area. Having said that, I still appreciate anyone politely sharing anything I missed or any other interesting tidbits about the PS2 revisions. I've learnt a lot from you guys and appreciate you sharing information.

@WindyCornerTV6 жыл бұрын
You must has misheard what I said, the 70000 isn't region free, the power supply is universal, I was implying you can import an overseas 70000 without the need for a step up/down converter. No consumer PS2 is region free, the only one that was region free is the TEST and TOOL PS2 units used by developers.

For anyone considering buying a used one. I feel it is important to mention one major flaw of the SCPH-30000 series, in short: the laser units on their disc drives are known to be unreliable so one day you might turn on your PS2 and notice that it will no longer read Ps1 and Ps2 games on CD, Double layer DVD games (God of War 1 and 2, Gran Turismo 4, the European version of Genji etc.) or even just regular DVD games in the worst cases. There is supposed to be a fix that involves taking the console apart, cleaning the lens and adjusting the laser potentiometer with a screwdriver. It’s easier than it sounds, you don’t have to take the console apart entirely, just the disc drive and you only need a regular philips head screwdriver but your mileage may vary and even if you did manage to get it back working this will decrease the lifespan of the laser. If you really want a fat Ps2, don’t bother with the 30000 series and get the 50000 instead.

@@sliverbullet7973 In my experience, the 50000 has a significantly quieter fan, and the drive is much better than the 30000's. Also, it has an integrated IR receiver, which is handy if you plan on using it as a DVD player.
@marinellovragovic12072 жыл бұрын
@@smtlego The 39000 model seems to have even more reliable laser units. It may have the loudest fan of the whole series, but it is also the sturdiest PS2 console. The best solution would be to swap out the 39000 fan with a 50000 one. Which is fairly easy to do.

Just look we haven't gotten any gta since gta v in 2012-2013. And for ps2 came out vice city and san andreas and liberty city stories and gta 3 all within 5 years and top quality games and here we are sitting 7 years without a new gta game. I know gta isn't all games but most games were crating with top quality and quantity at 6th gen gaming. Plus online gaming is without stories and only gameplay plus it's the root of microtransactions so i really dislike when every game has multiplayer. In short therms companies grew more greedy over time which makes less games and more buying dlc and microtransactions

There's another model that you didn't discuss: The 75000 models. The 70000 models were considered perfect PS2s in miniature. Starting with the 75000 models they stripped PS1 hardware and switched over to PS1 emulation. This also affected certain PS2 games that used PS1 hardware for minor functions.

for europe lads; If you want to go for the FAT series, here is what I learned from repairing; on 5000x series the fan is not that loud, and the optical drive is quieter somewhat too, compared to the 3000x series. However, you need to be careful not to use scratched discs in the system, because the laser controller IC has a bug, wich can result (and ofthen does!) a toasted lens. This bug can be fixed with "romeo" mod. ( I still prefer 5000x, overall of any, if you treat it well, its gonna last.) The slimline 7000x is not the best choice, it has several incompatibility issues with games, also its hard to find (nowdays its seems impossible) to get a properly working lens for the system. The 7700x and up series has a slightly improved disc drive, and doesnt have compatibility issues. If you have a slim, 7000x or 7700x, I highly recommend to remove the cooling fan, and clean it, lot of dust stucks in the fan in the years, its a known issue, causing overheat. All hail my Hungrish language skills, have a good day.

The 7000x series can be considered the best one if you have the skills: this model still has the HDD controller on board, and with soldering and cutting some space for the IDE cable, you can connect an HDD to the console, making it the smallest PS2 with HDD support. Although, you will either have to use a 2.5" drive with an adapter or have an external PSU for the 3.5" one, as the slim model does not have enough electricity to power the latter (+ probably lacking 12v rails)

Seeing all this, I would have to say a 7000 model is probably the better version. Seeing as how the slimmer tech in the port is much more convenient and the adapter really helps for foreign games. And also, it may not last or be as tough as the 3000 or 5000 though it's bulkiness, the 7000 model has been relatively easy to clean if taken really good care. So overall, I really do believe the 7000 model is the best version of the PS2 console there is.

@Fighting LeveL but it is rare to work. Some 90000 models have an older bios and FMCB works on them (like on some of the first slims that were made had IDE solder points leftover from the older model and you can install an internal HDD, but it quickly got removed), but the majority have the "seek update" function removed like mine and it doesnt work, you can install on the Memory Card, but it doesnt boot on startup. You can mod using modchips however.

One problem that effects the 7000 PS2's is the bloody ribbon cable for the laser, they slowly become unstuck from the bottom of the console over years of use and then start to stick up and come in contact with your discs causing circular scratches. Apparently one off the ways its caused is by not turning your console off properly so the laser doesn't go back to its default position on its runner arms and causes the ribbon to get out of shape over time. Just a warning to you all to make sure you check your clearance before putting rare games in a PS2 you haven't used in a while.

So many memories are with that bloody console it's insane and now i'm debating on whether I should somehow try to get the thing fixed or just buy a new one that's over $100 on ebay or something.
@HammerBlow666 Жыл бұрын
The best ps2 slim to buy is the 79000 series. Every single slim will eventually scratch and destroy your discs for the reasons you mentioned except the 79000 series. This is because there are plastic clips holding the ribbon down instead of glue adhesive, ensuring the ribbon will never pop up and scratch the disc. I think the area the ribbon sits in is also deeper on the 79000 series.

If your getting a fat PS2 get the 39000 or 50000. From my experience the 39000 is the most reliable but the fan is loud as hell. The 50000 is very quiet but the lasers aren’t as strong or last as long as the 39000. I also find the laser and tray rails to last longer on the 39000. The 50000 is also slightly faster at reading disks and the CPU is also 5 MHz faster but it doesn’t effect gameplay or frame-rates from what I’ve seen I’d also suggest avoiding the old 30000 and 30000 R models because they tend not read blue bottom PS2 CDs. If you find one for a good deal and it works it’s fine but if you can get the 39000 and if the fan bothers you get the 50000.

One of the perks of the slim is the DVD top loader, very durable. Yet on mine it still failed. Then again that poor slim of mine has been beaten around since I was a small child. I can still play games on it through Free McBoot though. I'm about to retire the Slim, Where it can sit next to the PS1 on my shelf as a reminder of all the fun I had on it. I think it's also worth noting that the 7000 runs hotter than the 9000, and has a metal fan (as opposed to a plastic one on the 9000) which might sound better but is actually a liability if you live in a humid place like a coastal city. It will rust and get really noisy.

Sony has never been my number 1 platform. My favorites from this gen were easily the Xbox and Dreamcast. But I respect the PS2 as it had some amazing titles. And I admire Sony's engineers for what they accomplished with the slim. Its so cool how they slimmed down the fat that much. I know that a major chunk of the fats design was its HDD bay and that's easy to get rid of but fitting all of that tech at the time into something that slim and then the 90000 model having the PSU built in was awesome.

A relative of mine has the Bravia TV and one interesting thing is that it has BIOS version 2.5 which is 2 minor versions newer than the last slims that were made. It obviously doesn't support FMCB but homebrew still runs via Swap Magic so it's possible to use Open PS2 Loader etc. The video link to the TV appears to use RGB rather than YPbPr regardless of the configuration option (in fact that might have been removed altogether, I don't remember) so 480p isn't possible. Some buttons on the TV remote could be used to control DVD playback too which was pretty neat.

The 9000x has to be better than the 7000x edition, for 2 basic reasons: 1) the fan air exiting through the side allows the heat to not interfere/conflict with the cables, avoiding burning etc, which is clever. And 2), it's more durable; I bought the 7000x edition TWICE, the 1st burned the disc driver, the 2nd's fan broke to shreds, not to mention the sound of scratching plastic when it worked on the last 3 days, before switching. All that since 2006...

I got my 70000 model in 2005 and I never had an over-heating issue plus I live in the warm tropics, so it would have been subjected to more heat. But it did have an issue where is was scratching discs, what happens is the ribbon cable connecting the lens and motherboard gets pushed up and scratches discs. It's an easy fix, involves pushing the lens around, there's detail tutorials on the internet. I've never had any issues with the 70000 and 90000 playing games. But as mentioned in the video, Metal Gear Solid Special Missions was the only game that gave me problems and can not be played on the 30000 and 50000 model.

Basically small artifacts appear in high contrast parts of the image. It really varies from game to game based on their visual make-up and colour usage. It's not a big difference, you really would have to have your eye pressed against the TV to see the differences. You can negate the issue entirely by using RGB Scart cables if it's option for your set-up. But I personally prefer component for having the option of using progressive scan in some games, like Street Fighter Alpha Anthology and Black.

There's a lot more to it than that. 30000, 30000R, 35000 and 39000 have bad load times and tend to break a lot. The 50000 has REALLY good load times (This is the one I'd recommend and it works well with Matrix Infinity) The 70000 is good but suffers from heat issues, leave a game playing for a while and it gets VERY hot, don't put on carpet or low ventilated area! As for the 90000, I've never owned one but I've heard they have PS1 issues. The easiest one to install a modchip into is the 39000 model but due to a weak inferior laser and laser circuitry, burned games will likely not load properly, the best for modchips is as I said the 50000 models, it has slightly more difficult solder points but it's WAY better than the previous models. If you're low on space get a 70000 those are great too. STEER CLEAR FROM THE 30000R PS2's!!! These are the worst and have aged better than room temperature milk. I've repaired and modded multiple of these models and they are fucking terrible, even with a good working laser games take a disgustingly long time to boot up and work, and the console has a scary fail rate. That R stands for RUBBISH! Overall go for 39000, 50000 or 70000. (35000 is a slightly more improved 30000R but is still shit but those are hard to come by so whatever)
