@@Anti-Yeet I agree there are more read/write limits on ssd. It’s why most security systems use mechanical drives. And ssd may run cooler but they get crippled in a hot environment over the mechanical variety. Ssd is far superior in terms of technical features of course. But people clearly turn blind eyes to the issues. Ssd really comes down to the bottle neck of the system itself. Iv got 3 original Xbox’s with the original 8gb drives in them they are doing just fine.
@MrDarkSephirot2 жыл бұрын
SATA 1 won't matter that much because it only affects sequential speeds, while SSD's biggest advantage over HDD's are random speeds (measured in IOPS). In short, the time it takes to jump between each little file is instantaneous, while HDD's had to physically move their head (needle) across the disk. This is what greatly improves overall speed in many tasks, regardless of the maximum sequential speed, or whether you are using NVME or SATA.

I am sure ps3 games are optimized for streaming rather than access time.
@MrDarkSephirot2 жыл бұрын
@@stephenxs8354 PS3 is "agnostic" to its storage to a certain degree, but I'm happy to learn more if you ellaborate. Its CPU asks for a certain asset (like a small texture, that is loaded into the RAM and later managed by the GPU). And it's the storage (HDD/SSD) that looks for that particular file before loading it. SSD does this almost instantaneously. I have seen this with my eyes in the original RAGE game for example. So I don't deny that PS3 has other bottlenecks where SSD's can't totally help, but I'm very sure of this behaviour in PS3, PC's and other consoles as well.
@jesuschavez91102 жыл бұрын
Does it decrease heat? That makes it worth it to me lol
@MrDarkSephirot2 жыл бұрын

Games like Silent Hill, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and Dino Crisis having different resolutions in menus, load, and play as normal. If you have the discs it'll play as emulation. the store loads fast which was a surprise. It's also quieter I'm guessing due to the HDD being one of the culprits. Literally zero mention of drive health and longevity issues that an SSD faces on PS3, a system that does not even know what an SSD is. Disc based games in particular (unless it's COD, which breaks BR lasers instead) are constantly caching data on the drive instead of streaming directly from the disc. That means the SSD is constantly writing and erasing data as you are playing, the one thing that erodes SSDs and the PS3 does not even support TRIM. There is virtually no information out there on how PS3 handles SSDs in the long run. People in the PS3 dev community saying don't use them, Rebbitors saying they are the greatest thing ever with no downsides, people here blindly quoting said Rebbitors and then these videos with unironic Amazon links to go buy the things and no mention of their one major drawback.

Fast forward to last night I picked up a 1TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD for $64 after tax from my local Best Buy. Totally worth it to replace the stock 320Gb HDD in my PS3 Slim even with the SATA I hardware bottleneck.

Does swapping from a mechanical HDD to a SATA SSD alleviate if not eliminate the occasional freezing issues that the PS3 is known for? And do SATA SSDs last longer than a mechanical HDD?

The biggest difference in load times will come from open world games and most games that came out late in the consoles lifecycle that have data installed on the drive prior to being playable. The differences will be even greater if your games are being ran 100% from the SSD/HDD rather you copy your disc via Multiman or buy off PSN. Ex: Launching GTA 5 from disc and my loaded 120GB stock HDD was taking 3 minutes to load into Franklin's house. With an SSD, it was ~2 minutes if I recall correctly. When I copied the game completely to the SSD, it took 55 seconds, which is roughly what it takes to load the PS4 version on the PS5's internal drive. A monumental difference. The differences will be marginal in most other cases it's true, but in this day and age you can a 1TB SSD for ~$60USD which is a steal compared to what I paid this time 2 years ago at $86. Almost no point in NOT getting one today

game with 1 big file will not benefit of latency of ssd , but game with a hundred of small file will benefit of low latency acces from ssd , it's depend of game programming, some game have also execution locked from cpu or speed locked for the spec of bluray in their coding , that why some game don"t benefit of ssd and game from era bluray ( without inslall pre 2011 ) are also programmed for the speed of bluray , when the last game ( era 2012 2017 ) have semi install for benefit of hard drive speed , and their loading speed can be reduce more with ssd ( ex : dead or alive 5 in ssd have almost no laoding time

Mine has much quicker load screens on skyrim since the upgrade. But it still freezes sometimes with multiman. No more Skyrim freezes YET. But I lost my save data due to a POS backup/restore feature on the PS3. Pretty sure the capacitors are going to need replaced as well.

For an old hardware like the ps3, it's worth to use an hybrid hdd instead of an proper ssd?.
@unlimitedslash2 жыл бұрын
Videogames are packs of hundreds/thousands of files, with that said hybrid drives or SSHD'S only copy to the SSD section the most used files (in the case of a PC that would be for example the OS and common used programs like google chrome), a console is made to play games, what you want if you wanna improve load times, reduce pop in etc is random write/read, thats where SSD'S shine, as they can access any file instantly where an HDD has to wait for the platters and the header to align the concrete sector, read/write in multiple passes etc, basically is really slow, even for the less common 10,000 rpm HDD's get nuked in performance by the cheapest SSD, even modern wifi is faster than that, not only that, but HDD's are mechanical, they WILL fail, due to wear and tear.

I think the best drives for ps3's are 7200rpm hdd and SSHD (faster than hdd but not ssd speed)
@stephenxs83542 жыл бұрын
The cheapest ssds come close to that so not worth it in most cases.

So if you run the games from using an actual disc copy an SSD isnt worth it? But worth it if you store games on the SSD drive

Could you please make a video on how to download games on PS3 slim after jailbreak?
@BossBig7093 жыл бұрын
Do you happen to know what brand is ideal for reliability and quality of HDD for a PS3 Slim CECH-2101A with official firmware? I still play most of my games on disc and some digital; I find that I’m comfortable sticking with the HDD than SSD since performance is not an issue but storage. My PS3 still has the 120GB hard drive from the factory it’s 11 years old and still works with no issues for past 3 months since cleaning.

Is there a max hdd size that the ps3 can handle? 2Tb, 3Tb etc
@idimidodjimi67603 жыл бұрын
@@blainelocklair hard cap limit depends of the file system used, common break point is 2GB so if 1.5 TB works -my friend has one in 2TB shouldn't be the problem. However they were not common goods back when PS3 was made so it really only way to know is to try , some people reported problems with large capacity drives - but no one confirmed their drive was 100% was ok , meaning most of them were used/reclaimed form notebooks and they might developed bad sectors or had other issues. At this moment i don't have any of the drives above 1TB to test , so I may get back to You with that info.

It'll also make your console more quiet and some kindda less power consumption.

Hi, thanks for the video. I upgraded to a SSD (Western Digital 1tb) and everything works great, but I can't play any more PS2 Games. When I try to launch them my PS3 turns off and the red power light starts flashing. Aparently it means there's an overheating problem. But how can this be an issue with this new SSD, and not with the old HDD? I'd appreciate any help you can give.

interesting findings. I wonder if it would be any faster transferring files from PC to PS3 over FTP via ethernet with an SSD over a HDD.

I think the difference between an SSHD and SSD would save you no more than a couple seconds here and there MAYBE. So if you can find a 1tb SSHD for significantly less than an SSD I would
