Hugo Cabrera something is wrong with the PS4 system . this problem has not occurred to me I had my PS4 for almost a half a year nothing yet has happen to it . if it overheats it's probably because you put it somewhere it might get every Dusty inside of it .u might have to do a cleaning process to it .

Hugo Cabrera not a professional but it's one of my opinions people say it's the Wi-Fi but I don't think that's true . the fan could not be working properly or dust is blocking the air from the fan cooling the PS4. that might be what is causing it to overheat. one the thing about the PS4 it will turn off by by itself b/c something is wrong w/ it. if it's not that something might not be working properly you might want to have that check by someone who know more n knows what he's doing.

+Tomislav Cicak Interesting suggestion. In my case I have a new console with the same tv and it is now working ok but it is worth checking the connectivity of the hdmi cable with the tv. I think if it was a cable connectivity problem it would happen a lot more often and erraticaly but in some rare cases it could be the cause I assume.

SONY has a checklist of things to go through including loose hard drive. I had gone through all of them. They eventually admitted to faulty electronics and replaced the unit. It is not an isolated incident, my son's friend also bought a PS4 for xmas and has the same problem. A brand new PS4 should not overheat and it should be built to withstand hours of game play by kids. The bottom line is fast prototyping combined with bad quality control by SONY are to blame.

+Guillermo Rosario, for me it fixed the problem. I also put it vertically in an after-market stand to make sure it does not overheat. But so far so good. Apparently some people got it changed and then still had the same problem, so your mileage will be a function of your luck (or lack thereof).

It is ridiculous that a company so well known doesn't stand behind their products and go for a recall to fix all these problematic PS4s' at no cost to their clients.Sony has been making tons of $$$ with all PS, PS2, PS3 and now the 4. Come one Sony, grow up and they care of your customers.I bought one for my kids a week ago, the first time after 30 minutes it turned off. I had the same problem too... To fix it you need to turn off ps4 and then keep pressing the power button until you hear 2 bips After that you connect your controller and go straight to option 3 Then you choose how to update system software and everything will be alright ( it worked for me ) :D

Update: I'm not one to be beaten and the odds of getting 2 "bad" units seemed odd to me, so I did some research. My problem is solved I think, turns out that after the initial set up and updates of the unit I pressed the power button on the unit to turn it off (that only puts it into sleep mode orange light comes on) then I un-plugged the unit- DON'T DO THAT. You cannot un-plug the unit in this mode or it crashes the computer/corrupting files. I plugged the unit back in and turned it on with WiFi connection enabled to allow for automatic updates for the unit. It updated the unit, I played for 2 1/2 hrs without any incident where before I could only play for 1/2 hr then it would shut down. I turned the unit off properly by going to the options menu, click on power option, now click on turn off PS4. Doing this will safely turn off the unit and you can unplug it if need be without incident. My guess is that crashing the unit corrupts the update file that fixes the "turning off" issue. Until you connect to WiFi and get it updated the problem will remain. After updating only turn the unit off after regular use of play by going to options power menu and select turn off PS4 (thereby avoiding sleep mode and possible loss of power that could crash the unit update file) . Hope it helps folks out there that might be pulling their hair out.

Since you've been using it for 2 years before it happened maybe your ps4 needs a good cleaning inside to remove the dust. Maybe the fan is clogged or stopped working. You can open it up and have a look. You can use compressed air to clean it up. Good luck.

My PS4 has plenty of ventilation (cut a hole in the back of the entertainment center, PS4 is on a thick book). I've had this problem since day 2 I owned it, I think the OS 4 made it worse. I'm gonna try hooking it up to Ethernet instead of Wifi, heard some people say that works. For me, I just unplugged and re-connected all the cables and let it cool down. I've even seen some people talk about how there's two power prongs in the back right corner that aren't seated correctly, so some have put weight on top (like a dictionary) and that fixed it for them. I honestly don't want to pay $180 just to send it in and get it rejected for a real fix. So guys, just start out with this first. Sending it in for me is a last resort

I was able to figure out that the issue with my PS4 shutting off resulted from overcharging the controller with a USB cable plugged into the system. I noticed that every time it did shut off I happened to be charging my controller. If the controller is overcharging, there will be ?? where the battery charge icon is. for last year's Christmas I bought the star wars battlefront ps4 bundle and it wouldn't let me play the day without shutting off. I had to return it and they kept saying it was just overheating because I didn't let it cool down. I only play a few hours a day and sometimes not at all. It doesn't ever get hot though. I started pointing a fan at it every time I play and since I started doing that it only happened once, and that was after like 5 hours of play. My PS4 is a launch 500GB and it just started shutting off on its own. I've verified its not a "loose HDD", the power cable, or the HDMI so I am going to open it up and see if its the metal tab for the power button. If its not that I am more than likely going to just trade the system in and get a PS4 slim or pro.

I think mine may have happened because I "deep cleaned" the inside of the PS4 (even though it ended up not being as dirty as I assumed it would be). I think taking off the top plastic part may have bent the power tab as I've not had any issues since I corrected.

Exactly same issue here, got it the other day, first one shutting off in middle of a game or in other use and not turn on until I cut power. I got it exchanged for new one, this (fingers crossed) have not turned off in use but does in sleep mode and same issue turning it on. Tried cable it to my router, and it seemed to fix the issue, though this morning it was turned off again. Now back on wifi and no downloads, been in standby mode 10 hours, and not yet turned off. Seems to be issue with wifi and download for me, would be strange it was hardware problem with so many, hoping for software solutions even though it is strange there is different results when exchanging for new unit. Is there any news on solution here? So far wired Internet seems to work for some (me included), power cable? HDMI cable? Thanks for uploading this video, did Sony confirm hardware issue here, and if so what part of hardware was malfunctioning?

my ps4 is 2 and a half years old! i have kept it on a vertical stand! and i dont move it! its on a open table and i dont play it for more then 3hours! i started playin it for the first time after 3weeks! 20mins down in middle of the game it got froze! then rebooted amd got a corrupt system software error! i was also downloading system update 3.55 in the background when thid happened and was playing fifa 16! when you get this error you hav to Accept and report it! I wasnt able to do that too as it again froze and turned off! when the display freezes... its shows some distortion before turning off! even in safe mode it turns off! then every 30 seconds it turned off but i observed that if i let it cool off for hours then it wouldnt turn off that soon! it will work for atleast 5mins! i then updated my ps4 next day through a pen drive to 3.55! when i reacged the dashboard part! there was a corrupted file where you select the logo of your games! and on selecting the corrupt file it said delete this file! so i fully initialised my ps4! the process tuk more than an hour and surprisingly my ps4 did not turn off this time! initialisation completed and set up my ps4! and after a minute or so it again froze and showed the same problem! I also tried reinserting my hard disk! resolution changes everytime i try to turn on my ps4! tried my friends hdmi cable and power cord too which did the same thng! and this makes me think there is bothing wrong with my power supply and hdmi cord! the only thing i suspect now is my hard disk! im gonna try inserting one of my friends hard disk! il let you know what happens

+Julius Domkus, I called SONY and told them what the problem was. They will ask you to go through a checklist to try to solve the problem. If after doing that you still have the problem and your console is new they will have to change it to a new one for you. The bottom line is this is a very widespread problem which is costing customers a lot of aggravation and costing SONY some money to fix so they will try very hard not to replace it if they can avoid it. They prefer to upset buyers than to fix their sub-par product once and for all. This problem is so common that they should really do a recall on the PS4 if they were a honest company. So be prepared for a lot of aggravation before you manage to get a new console. It sucks but that's the truth.

This is a common overheating problem for the PS4, not sure about the Slim. Try to use it vertically on a stand so that it gets enough air. Anything to cool it down should help, maybe fans? I know, it sucks.

+Hercules Gerakis Unfortunately it seems some people returned it and got a new one 4 times and still had the problem. Try to troubleshoot using the SONY troubeshooting list and then try to set it up vertically in an after-market stand to make sure there is good ventilation. You should not have to do that if SONY had produced a decent console but unf that's not the case. Good luck.

this is exactly what happened to mine we thought it was a power issue as we had a power surge and my multi connector plug was broken for my tv playstation sky ect so i bought a power supply and replaced that, it didnt work so i replaced the cord still acting the same. we did see a difference when we took the back cover off exposing the fan that it lasted around 20 mintues before the ps4 cut out so i watched the fan but tht was still working so we think its a mother board problem or a overheating issue. any way i decided fuk the ps4 and go and build me a gaming pc better in everyway but more expensive haha. i suggest sell it for parts or throw it in the trash and build a gaming rig👌

For me it worked I unplugged it waited a couple of seconds and it worked

It may happen again at shorter time intervals, at which point you may have to put it on a vertical stand to reduce the overheating problem. If still happens and you're still under warranty then get it changed. I hope one day Sony will acknowledge the overheating problem of their consoles...

KenniCrazy well I am a person who refurbishes those consoles and resales them to GameStop the thermal paste in the console is dried up and burnt out lack of airflow and if the console is overheating through time the console will.then become dead

+Prevail Myth I had the same problem with mine! it would just shut off and it would take a while before it would let me turn it back on! I tried a lot of things but nothing worked until I didnt use it for a couple weeks and now its been working fine for 3 days! Hope this works for you guys too

+christian camacho Sadly it looks like the quality control on the PS4 is close to zero. Other friends bought a PS4 for their kids at christmas as well and they started having exactly the same problem. It is a very widespread problem and instead of doing a recall that would hit the news headlines they prefer to pretend that there is no problem and replace the console after each customer complains. I used to buy a lot of Sony products but this is the last straw for me. I vote with my feet and my wallet. I hope you can solve your problem or get a replacement unit. We eventually got a replacement unit that works so far and they apologized saying we were right that there was indeed a defect with the other unit... Good luck.
