I remember going to my friend Jamal's house in maybe 1990 and that day we were playing Contra... he died on the last boss in Contra Nes. He was so mad, he yanked the nes off the big wooden tv and started to jump on it. His Dad came downstairs and simply looked at him, then looked at me and said "Congratulations Mike, my son just donated all 50 of his Nintendo games to you" . Jamal started getting upset with his dad and his Dad said "No, I'm not going to bother hitting you. You've just shown me how much you hate video games and I promise you'll never own another video game again as long as you live in my house" ... Of course, this was 1990 ish so basically he could go to pretty much anyone's house on the block and play video games but he was never the same kid after that.

Desoldering 'wands' are better than desoldering 'guns', while manual solder suckers are good for small, quick jobs but a real pain for large jobs. Overall I prefer the desoldering 'wand'.

Nice Fix! Since you don't work on a lot of older boards you may not see the use of an electric desoldering gun. The 14 and 28 Pin DIP chips on older boards are a great example of when these electric desoldering guns are extremely handy. Everyone does not work on HDMI connectors and ceramics caps 95% of the time.

@@NorthridgeFix I know Alex. That's what I always notice for sure. You carry the most common sense tried and tested tools for the bench tools for sure. No doubt and I really like that. That's the reason I commented because I see facts on both sides. I see viewers could have a use for them, but I don't see that great of a benefit for your work bench though. For many of us it's just something to take up more space and not worth it. I do see how some may find them more helpful! Keep up the excellent repairs! 👍

@northridgefix I have a heated desoldering tool that works a lot like the sucker you have except it's heated. It does need to be flat on the board, but the plunger is exactly like yours. The heated part is like a soldering pencil with a hole in the middle. I used it to fix over 100 Commodore 64 computers back in the 80's. At that time, a professional desoldering station was $400 and the tool I got made by OK Tools back then was $30. I had used desoldering bulbs like you talked about several months ago and I agree that they weren't that great. There is one disadvantage to the heated desoldering tool I got. Because there is a thin metal tube that the solder goes through before it gets to the plunger part like yours has, the tube would gradually clog and I had to use the unclogging tool they supplied to clean it out. I'm thinking I might order yours and see if works without frequent cleaning. I see you use yours a lot, so it must hold up well under frequent use. I really appreciate that you use the tools you sell so we can see that they hold up under heavy use.

Alex, a trick I learned when I was an apprentice in the 80s. Put a neoprene sleeve over the solder sucker tip. It enhances suction at any angle, prolongs tip life and prevents pcb damage.
@RFC3514
@RFC3514 9 ай бұрын
Yep. Silicone works well too, and might be easier to get than neoprene.
@ralphj4012
@ralphj4012 9 ай бұрын
Yes. Cutting the original tip reduces the suction, albeit only slightly, and means you have to rotate the sucker each time. Silicone sleeve also allows an iron to be kept in place longer.

A proper desoldering gun (with temp controlled tip) works well If you work on inverters or welders. The IGBT's, MOSFETS, capacitors and transformers are quite big, with lots of sonder. The correct tool for the correct job. I can't see you using an electrical solder gun under the microscope. Ouch, hope your mom heals quickly (and completely).

Sorry for your mom, she should heal up quickly. Electric de-soldering machines are a better choice if one works on equipment with a majority of through hole components. Why? Because the tip only applies heat to the component being removed and removes solder completely. Also, there is less chance of overheating the trace and damaging it or knocking off components that are nearby. I use all three tools depending on the job: De-soldering braid, a quick solder sucker similar to yours or the de-soldering station when removing many through hole components that are close to each other. I also use your low melt solder when appropriate. Thanks for the video.
@lookitskazzy
@lookitskazzy 9 ай бұрын
Best wishes to your mom for a quick and safe recovery. A desoldering gun is invaluable when doing recaps of through hole components. Even for HDMI ports it would probably be better than using a solder sucker because I've seen you struggle several times with the eucker to clear through holes, and I promise you that you won't randomly knock components into the 9th dimension with a soldering gun. It pays for itself quickly.

That's typical for mothers and grandmothers. Once my mother was supposed to take care of our children. But before we left we had some coffee and cake. While we sat there my mother told us that when baking the cake her pinky accidentally got into the kitchen mixer. She insisted that everything was okay and her pinky was fine. However, her finger was broken two times and needed two surgeries and she can can barley bend her finger today. Thank god it was "only" the pinky. So, never mess with kitchen mixers. They're really powerfull as are mothers and grandmothers!😄
