Psalm 114 (Tonus Peregrinus)

Nice to find this during my Durham organ search. Psalm 114 is part of the weekly readings during Easter Season in the LBW I still use at home.

This is very mellow, much like the original chant. I also like Willcocks's arrangement of the chant, since it's powerful and emphatic.

Tonus Peregrinus is my favorite of the Psalm Tones. I pray the Daily Offices from the St. Dunstan's Plainsong Psalter, which is designed for use with the American Book of Common Prayer (1928 edition), but works well with the English BCP as well. I usually sing the Venite and the Nunc Dimittus to the Tonus Peregrinus. St. Dunstan's points Psalm 114 a bit differently than they sang above, but it does indeed assign Tonus Peregrinus to it.

That, and many other reasons, is why the Episcopal church is where to be! ;-) I'm not saying that no one picks and grins in Episcopal churches, but I think as a whole we have a higher standard of musical and artistic appreciation and usage. The unfortunate part is that while the Episcopal Church has some wonderful church buildings throughout the USA, the majority are not great for singing - my church is a gorgeous Ralph Adams Cram built in 1907, but the carpet does us no good!

I used this tone only once a year for the washing of feet on Holy Thursday. With the candles, the cloud of insense that gattered in the ceiling, the stained glass windows and the statues, the essence of that ceremony was as strong as it was nearly some 2,000 years ago. Today, sadly, Catholic churches prefer guitars and piano(both of these are forbidden by papal indult from 1905) and the use of music based trash instead of proper Catholic worship with organ and chant.

Hello, could someone here please tell me where I could find/download/purchase the edition of the organ harmonization for the first Psalm Tone (for Psalm 114) played here? I think its a beautiful setting of the 'Tonus Peregrinus' Chant Tone. Thank you very much.

+facundoz1 I believe this is the harmonization written by David Willocks, the late Director of Music at Kings College, Cambridge. I read on line that there is a copy in “The Anglican Psalter”, ed. John Scott, with Psalm 113/114. That was the only definitive information I could find on a quick search.

+facundoz1 I found the score in "The Psalms of David" published by Paraclete Press, Brewster, Massachusetts, edited by George H. Guest. As expected, it's Psalm 114 on p. 202. These are various Psalm tune chants to all 150 Psalms with words from the 1928 Episcopal Prayer Book. Paraclete's phone number is 800-451-5006 and their website is www.paracletepress.com.
