Adonai is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters; He restores my soul. He guides me in straight paths for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for You are with me. Your rod and Your staff--they comfort me. You have prepared a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Though I am a Catholic priest in Montana, I have been seriously studying both Arabic and Biblical Hebrew for a full fifty years. I have read the Psalms all the way through in Hebrew several hundred times and published my own English translation, with the words set to the Tonus Peregrinus, which is found among Yemenite Jews and in Gregorian chant. I was fortunate to acquire a recording of the Qur'an chanted by the great Sheikh Mohamad Saddiq Al Minshawi, which I followed all the way through once, maybe twice. I just discovered Moshe Chavusha's recording of the Psalms here on KZbin and I must say that I have been blown away by it (kammots asher tidfennu ruah?). Every word is sung so clearly and with such fine musical sensitivity. I have been touched on a deep pre-verbal level. Thank you so much.

Hopefully takes you less than half a century to realize alma doesn’t mean betula
@thebiblepriest4950 Жыл бұрын
@@adamyitzhak9907 Thank you for challenging my internal Masorah. Jeremiah uses betula to describe the nation of Israel in her advanced maturity (Jer 18:13) while Isaiah uses alma to prophesy that a young woman will conceive (Is 7:4). The Seventy who translated the Hebrew Bible into Greek rendered both terms as "parthenos" (virgin). The Seventy liked to hedge their bets by using generic terms instead of precise or proper terms -- "man" for both Adam and Ish, "God" for five or six different divine appellatives, etc.). The New Testament authors quote the Septuagint, and so that usage became normative for Christianity -- until Pope Pius XII ordered all new Bibles to be translated from the Hebrew (Divino afflante Spiritu, 1943). Thus Catholic usage today is no longer chained at the hip to the Septuagint, while still respecting it as the first translation of the Hebrew Bible ever, and more ancient than any other by several centuries.
