Hey there, I am a girl from Slovakia and I can confirm that Easter is not that bad as he pictured. Yes, it's some weird old pagan tradition, so that women will stay healthy and beautiful, but it is really symbolic. Ok, it can get pretty wild with the water sometimes, but they never beat us with a whip, they barely touch us. Yes, I always saw unfair, that the girls were supposed to give them something, but it doesn't have to be money, it's mostly sweets and chocolate eggs. In the past, the girls would just give them painted eggs - another very important Slovak Easter tradition. There are women (mostly feminists) that think this tradition should be canceled, but there are also many women who see it as fun and love it. I'm somewhere in the middle. But we're not alone in this, we share this weird unique tradition with Czechs and some other Slavic nations.

The whipping used to be much more widespread as a tradition, nowadays less people do it, also it's not like actual beating :D It should be more symbolic, and what you're given depends, giving money is outdated in general tho. Racism is way more common amongst older generations, also it depends on the city. Bratislava as a capital and more multi-cultural place has a lot less racism than other location, with a more homogenous population.

Peter is indeed good person, youtuber and I really love him but you must to know him and his sense of humor first, he has very unique humor, he is sarcastic but yeah as you mentioned he is informative, funny etc., but he never goes deep in though, so for example our ancestors on Easter really whipped (gently! :D) women and poured water on them bcause of healthiness and beauty and they gave them homemade products e.g. bacon, eggs, spirits (it was/is our unique culture), nowadays it's money, chocolate..., about racism, yeah pretty controversial theme but this concerns especially older generation which is much conservative here in 'eastern Europe' :D but we Slovaks have this complaining nature and complain almost on everything so don't take it much seriously :D, beside that, i think we are really friendly to everyone and we know how to feast with visitors, so feel free to visit us :D P.S about that žinčica ('spoiled milk'), i think it was bit much drama about it in the video (hundred people, hundred tastes) :D our cuisine is pretty unique too, it's based on milky products, smashed potatoes, dumplings and many others ... so you must only to try it and you will understand it :D P.S 2 If there are any other questions, feel free to ask ;)

1. The thing about easter came out a bit wrong, we do not beat them up its actually a tradition, where we spill cold water on women for them to be healthy and then whip them just a bit, like we seriously do not f 'em up... nowadays its usually some perfume instead of water and just a small whip. In return they usually give eggs made out of chocolate... just modern era... kids prefer cash over choco 2. Don't worry about the racism dude its not like u get beat up here just bcuz ur black... only if ur really unlucky and meet some group of skinheads, but that can happen in the UK too, I personally even think it's more common there, maybe you might get some weird looks from older people that never seen a dark skinned person, but thats about it.

Man, so good, tho u got 1 part wrong, the Velvet revolution caused the fall of the Communist regime, not the separation. Velvet revolution was 11.17. 1989, the separation happened on 1.1. 1993, so they are 2 different events in our history. Though I'm from the Czech Republic and I can confirm that Slovakia is like a brother to us, even our borders on the main highways are just marked by lines etc. the relationship is that good (but this applies to only Czechs and Slovaks, and the citizens of other countries that are part of the Schengen zone/EU, for people like you or for people from countries that aren't in the EU/Schengen zone there is the casual border crossing, you know passports and all that stuff), also the racism thing is due to only one single thing, Communism, you were frickin' lucky to spot a foreigner in Slovakia/Czechia before 1989, so people are just about adapting to the fact that there are blacks, asians etc. but I think that over time it'll get better and better

On the other hand, my younger brother was visiting all his girl classmates, family and friends. They offered him food and drinks when he were old enough and they give him chocolate, money and eggs. And it wasnt just spare money, one year he came back with 50euros. Lot of teens started to leaving their home for Easter, or they just hide somewhere. The racism statistics are super questionable. Mainly because we changed a lot during the years and most people who are racist here are just older generations that are not so open minded. I would say it's mainly because they haven't seen a person of color in their life. There's a KZbin channel André Traveler, he moved to Czechia from UK and you can see on his videos that older people are just curious about him being different, but still being nice welcoming and wholesome

I'm north african, I think that the "discomfort" is quite normal when you're in a country that didn't know a lot of ethnic movment throughout history, or the only "ethnic" diversity seen was through invasions (which means killings, kidnappings and being ruled by another group). Also, the more different people look from you, the most difficult it is to be comfortable because we're wired into being suspicious of "others", it's travelling, education and living with others that teach us that afterall, we're all the same. There's also another nuance: people might be able to be friends with you or living next to you as neighbours but being in a relationship or getting married will be more difficult, this happens everywhere, not just specific to Slovakia.

3:52 I don't think that new generation is racist. As Czech, (bcs we are red too) The old generation is IDK. They have no tolerance with others. In our country Gypsies (? isn't it racist? IDK how to call them differently) are stamped as ppl who don't work, act rude and think that they are gods (of course not everyone, but loudest ppl are more visible). So ppl in our country, don't like them, bcs some of them are not working and taking finacial support for free, or looks for problem. Yes and some of white here are racist on Asians too. And this is not excusable, but as country that was communist our older generation (maybe younger too) are not used to meet Black ppl on streets. We we're not that opened, just because of communism. But never saw anybody just shoot or something black guy or asian bcs he is black or asian. Never saw a problem with that. In Czech there is a guy that plays Basketball for Ústí nad Labem and he is black from America. I didn't hear anything against him. I think that England is more racist then us rn, just bcs of soccer xDDD And they made fun of us that we are racists, just bcs of Kúdela in one game with Scotland. Proof me if I'm wrong, but that's what I think.

Not spoiled milk but fermented milk and it is actually delicious with traditional dishes. Though you must get accustomed to like the taste, it is very salty-sour like. Also Slovaks are not racist, he is jokingly mentioning some weird statistic. You are totally safe to visit our country. There are black people living here vlogging about their lives here. Eg. The video is not intented to be true, just exaggerated for the purpose of making it entertaining. At Easter (spring time) the water is poured on the girls to keep them fresh and fertile throughout the year. The whipping is soft and symbolic - as the willow-tree wigs are flexible and also very fresh at the time, to transfer that quality onto girls / women. Men are served cookies and pastry and invited to the home, which is an excellent opportunity for a boy interested in the girl, to show interest, to get to know the family and vice versa. Usually fellows from the same school and age. The money is paid just symbolic amounts in coins, although I remember at childhood that some were giving a big excessively - but 90% of those were to the boys of the extended family.

Young Slovaks are not racist and older generations mostly not but they live whole life in isolated communist nation and they are mostly afraid of everything new. The older people who say they are against are probably likes you in 10 minutes if they know you better, they are just used to from older regime to dont trust everything from west:D many asians/black people live in CZ/SK and from my perspective many of them who study here say we are less racist than western cause we are not forced from goverment to tolerant, we just do it cause it is normal to respect others

On Easter you either spray girls with water or perfume and then you just LIGHTLY whip them and tell them a short poem. It can also differ by the location

Velvet revolution in November 1989 was the time when the Communist government resigned and we became a democratic country. That was still Czechoslovakia. It split and we became two independent countries as of 1st. January 1993. It was the result of an agreement between our politicians. No riots, no war between us. Not a single drop of blood was shed at the time. That's why they sometimes call it the velvet divorce. A little insight into our history. ;-)
