Played this very Strikers board at Shmup Slam V, and let me say this: as a casual player and Psikyo fan, I've rarely thought/cared about input lag. I don't mind 2CCing or 3CCing a game I enjoy, so I usually stick to console ports, including the ZeroDiv Switch version of Strikers II. First impression of the PCB was, "wow! I'm better at this game than I remember!" I was dodging patterns with what felt like surprising luck. Going back to the Switch later that day, the lag was unmistakeable, like the plane was on ice. It wasn't the initial response time that I noticed, but the way that every movement lasted much longer than intended, like the plane had no brakes. The controls had never felt laggy to me before, but now I realize that they're placing a huge artificial difficulty cap on the game. If you're playing on Switch, you can still have a great time, but be aware that you're playing a super-max difficulty mode of the game that is going to be a lot harder to clear and score.

The steam port of Strikers 1945 (the first one) is actually very accurate to the arcade version. When you mentioned that the steam port wasn't faithful to the arcade version, you were probably thinking of the Gunbird steam port, which has some notable inaccuracies. But the Strikers ports (both 1 & 2) and 99% accurate to their arcade versions in terms of difficulty and gameplay accuracy. The only very notable differences are cosmetic (different sound effects, music).

Hey, Mark. I'm the guy who commented about two weeks ago on your 1945 I Steam review with regards to the input lag. I remember saying I felt 1945 II felt a bit sluggish, but after days of shmupping I guess that was just me adjusting to my arcade stick. Great review and comparison of 1945 II, and congrats on getting the awesome looking PCB. I would say this inspires to take on 1945 II now since I've already achieved a couple of 1cc Monkey runs on 1945 I.

Just popping in to mention that your efforts to increase the quality of camera, editing and video in general is noticeable. We as a shmup community usually don't care as long as bullets and stuff are visible, but I do recognize the effort put into our craft. No matter whether we agree or disagree, I respect the hustle. Seems like a new cam and new settings, better editing than usual and although we laugh about it, the reaction cover faces ":o" is all an effort. It does not go unnoticed Mark, even if it goes unappreciated. Take care! I know this game was and is a game that has a history with you with all the Nintendo Life stuff. GGs!

Just a side note. I realized this while playing Crimzon Clover World Explosion: I noticed the difference of input lag in World Explosion while playing with Vsync-on compared to Vsync-off more often than many other games i play because the extra frame of input lag is a 33% increase when the lag goes from 2 frames to 3 frames. When i play a game that may already have 3 or 4 frames of lag with vsync off and then turn on vsync which may add a frame of lag, the extra input lag is either about a 25% or a 20% increase. I'm bringing this up because I think when people (myself included) play games that have 4, 5, or 6 frames of lag with vsync off and then play with vsync on, they may notice less of an input lag change because of the percentage of change. Example: If a game has 60 frames of input lag, am i going to notice 1 more frame of input lag (61fps)?? Probably not. For certain games that I play that normally play with 1, 2, or 3 frames of input lag: When the input lag goes up even by one frame, I have a tendency to notice it more than games that have 4 or 5 frames of input lag especially if it is a game I like to play often.
@TheElectricUnderground2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the vsync settings in different games can have some interesting effects for sure, I d say across the board just turn it off, as I can tell the difference when there is an extra frame of lag, but some players don t mind it too much

Do you delve into some of the older ports for example Dangerous Seed on the Megadrive compared to the ACA release last week?

I see they have a Strikers cab, and happily sat down and popped a coin in. Everything is goin' fine, until I realize, I cant get the plane to fly diagonally. These arcade ops swapped in a 4 way gate onto this machine! And just to really drive the nail in, after I got smoked, I walk around to check the other cabs. Metal slug, Tekken 7, the puzzle games, all had regular 8 way sticks. I suppose that is one way to make sure no super player sits down and jam out a 1cc.
