To describe PSO2NGS, as it is now. Its a lobby fashion simulator with great action combat but with unrewarding events and content hence there never being much to do. The community as you can tell is dedicated and I mean VERY dedicated. Not to mention getting into the game as a new player is never really that hard compared to some other MMOs. Despite how grim the state of the game may seem, the game wont die so easily. Still makes me sad about what it could've been though 😭

I somehow found PSO2 shortly before NGS released. Played it a bit and was blown away by how good the combat was and how much content there seemed to be. NGS releases and after like 50 hrs of playing I've seen everything there is in the game and dropped it shortly after. What a sad letdown.
@RDFrosty76456 ай бұрын
I recently within the past year started playing NGS and the game has good bones, the world is beautiful, the character customization is top tier, and the combat feels good (to much emphasize on guard counters imo but good). the downsides theres very little meat on the bones very little meaningful content, and too little class depth for both PAs and talent trees. They removed Mags as a mechanic, removed Transformations into fallzspawn, removed just attacks, and there seemingly not introducing chance uniques like lavis cannon, frozen shot ect. It would be great if they made more instanced content like luciel, or the yellow triggers something with meat on its bones. Id love to see them do a remake of Forrest, mines, caves and ruins from OG pso but updated. Maybe bring the casino back from base game, to me it just seems like there's hundreds of ways to add more to the game but the devs are so into making new scratch tickets instead of making good content to put meat on NGS's great skeleton.
@adamdevereaux27136 ай бұрын
Agree wit’ most of your points. But they have a separate team for scratches. And they’re addin’ other minigames but said they wouldn’t add a new casino.
@theoaremevano32276 ай бұрын
Yeah, the thing about aesthetic items is a consistent thing dating back to base PSO2. They've always had a steady stream of that stuff coming out which is why the list if items is utterly insane. The content production just takes them a very long time, and implementation of feedback, which has its own dedicated discord, also takes quite a while to have visible results. A system somewhat akin to the Dark Blast mechanic is releasing in a few days. The quests in the new area sound like they'll be instanced as well, but we haven't gotten details about that yet. Also, you may get that classic PSO area remake if the rumors around a PSO remake that came out recently are true, though how far off that is in the future is anyone's guess, leaked info being non-finalized and all.

It's as you say. The game still feels the same because in terms of actual gameplay nothing new has been added. The fun in playing the actual game instead of fashion or etc, is the playstyle and difficulty. Base PSO2 has different playstyles because the expansion of Photon Arts AND the levels of difficulty. They could've added the same formula for NGS because it's fun when you fail with a group and have to try again. An incentive to become stronger. Another thing is being able to craft weapons/armors and work towards it to be rewarded with power spiking. Overall the game has been stagnant in terms of gameplay, but it feels like they can revive the game state.
@Icu2826 ай бұрын
I already said this in a reply to someone too. But reminder NGS has been out almost 3 years now. It took the original PSO2 2 years to release Episode 3. So it is completely fair to expect the game to have at least as good of a structure as base pso2 did up to Episode 3 at this point. (It doesn't, but it's fair to hold NGS to that expectation).

@@SyperDTdoes it though?? Pretty much all the profit from NGS is used to fund other projects like Sonic Frontiers and such. They really don’t invest much of anything back into the game. @theoaremevano32276 ай бұрын
Update cadence for NGS is basically something worth spending some time on every two months and literally every in-between month is some event, which is more or less upkeep time for anyone needing work to keep up. Every event changes out the Limited Time Quests, which are basically experiments, which have varying success. When they actually ship out something permanent, it's always vastly more tuned based on how their experiments turned out. Every six months is the target for more significant shifts and the next new roadmap. It takes a long time for feedback to affect the game's direction, meaning they're also planning pretty far in the future, and the game is unlikely to go anywhere suddenly. The weird thing is, the biggest pieces of content tend to take the least amount of time to explain, where all their cosmetic items and little events and punctuated boosts have loads of details to go over. They'll always take a lot longer to show off a few collab items than they do to show something like the Leciel Exploration quest which contributes to a lot of the fun time spent on the game from day to day and gets periodic updates. Oddly this video has come out just before the next 6-month release with an entirely new area, (3 sectors in total) accompanied by new quest and story quest types, updates to Fighter and a new action element (Dark Blast/AIS-like power). The Headline about it is on the 31st. It's hard to say if they have a fully cohesive plan for the game's future or not yet, but June will give some evidence to one side or the other.

Considering my pfp is of my PSO2 character, hopefully I can at least say something without getting jumped. I have not logged into this game in months. It is actually a bad feeling that they can somehow design multiple new outfits for new scratch tickets WEEKLY but I have to beg and scream for something enjoyable to do. There is no reason for me to try and make my own fun when the only thing they can consistently bring is more cosmetics. And this is coming from someone that has spent THOUSANDS ON THIS GAME $120 every week for the new scratch to get what I wanted. I do not mind spending in games it doesn’t bother me. But I want to feel like I have more to do than log in and talk to my friends and take pictures. It is very obvious that they did not know what they wanted to do with New Genesis except make it look better and they basically admitted that last year. It’s not even like they haven’t added ANY new content. But everything they added I have hated not because it was too casual or because it was too hard but because the shelf life of the content was shorter than the amount of time it required me to get what I wanted from it. I had to accept the game is simply not for me. Not a Dead game, it is very much alive with a lot of people who make for very nice friends, but the game is not for everyone and that’s okay. And I say this whenever either game is brought up so people don’t have the wrong idea: if you are waiting for Blue Protocol, the end game of both games are roughly the same. The benefit of BP is the story is much longer and for me, more enjoyable and the world is actually very expansive and fun for me. But PSO2 has significantly better combat so if that’s your thing you probably won’t find it in BP.

This was a fair analysis of the game. I recently fully broke off of this game because of how little of the content available is actually important. It's not fun to chase gear anymore when the only thing you use that gear for is farming meseta or augment materials to make or buy stronger augments and then there's no real point in fighting bosses with that gear since they don't give you anything worthwhile unless you wanna farm for a rare AF weapon series that is slightly stronger overall than what you have. I loved my time with PSO2 and NGS foe the most part, especially the former since it was my first mmo that I played from release to finish (though it was the global version) and has made me longtime friends that I will cherish forever. It even made me go play previous games in the series (love portable 2 Infinity the most) and games similar to PSO2 in combat mechanics and scope so I got into Monster Hunter and God Eater.

As someone who played for around 1k hours (600 on my steam and the rest in multiple accounts) in Ship 2, i have to say that: this game is very frustrating in so many levels: Reaching end game is not that worthy because SEGA always give a decent or even better gear during seasonal/anniversary events (right now the event weapon series has more power and damage as a rarity 10 weapon (flugelgard series), the highest rarity in the game for now, and requires only lv.50 and it's already maxed out, just change the augments that suits your taste and you are good to go) and on base, you're stuck doing recommended 4 quests until you reach level 85 as a scion class or in both main and sub classes so you can join with what remained of the playerbase in that version (and good luck finding someone to help because almost everyone there is afking or preffer just chatting on the lobby). If you wanna play just for visuals and the "true end game" (aka. Phasion), just stick to the NGS version because the base is essencially dead at this point.

PSO2:NGS is a testament to what happens when you revolutonize a succesfful franchise, with not so well tought out implementations, usch as Open World, that here is done n an absolutely inadequate way and you pair it with copius amount of FOMO, extreme microtransaction and gacha mechanics, pay walls and tedious grinds meant to make you drop money on the game QoL features such as auto sell and "premium" subscription. Is a testament to mediocrity. Is not a bad game but is not a good game either. It just sorta exists

I played the JP version of the original PSO2 when the global didn't exist and was very busy every server that time i got the game on my PS Vita. PSO2 was in that time on its prime time. Every week there was a stream and a update about new content. But since the release of NGS and global it all faded away sadly.

As someone who plays PSo2 NGS I would say you grossly underestimate it’s player-base and community. Players and alliances creative space is also another way to spend time on NGS not all content is based off of combat. NGS is going to be around for a long time.
@vegitohaze20816 ай бұрын
That focus on things other than combat is exactly what turns a lot of people off though. I was excited about creative spaces until I realized that they were pushing it as something that is supposed to replace actual content and gameplay and took up dev time that could be spent on more and better gameplay content.

PSO2 NGS has its ups an downs. I've played since PSO2 released originally in the west and before it went to NGS. A lot of the problem with the team is that they are focusing on LTQ's (limited time quests) so instead of doing what say, Path of Exile does to where they release an update and keep parts of things from the update that works, adding to the world, NGS does the opposite and scraps it for reuse later down the line again. A prime example are Geo monsters which are larger bosses with varied movesets and different drop pools. Now in June there is a new update coming with an entirely new field type that has been in development for a while as well as a new card game called, i believe it was Line Strike. There is so, so much more they could've done but honestly it feels like the producer / director is just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks rather than actually having any real vision or direction for the game. As someone who has played PSO since the dreamcast days, it really saddens me to see what it has become. PSO has always been a social game, yes, but it never felt like it was this shallow either. The loot just feels so...pointless. It's grinding for the sake of grinding, which is not a fun endeavor.
@optimusfreim36866 ай бұрын
the point of the original PSO(and even OG PSO2) is the grind for the unique weapons, the dopamine you get when you get the super rare weapon after killing the boss hundreds of times, NGS has none of that
@rept76 ай бұрын
I enjoyed the combat, movement, more open world, character customization, and for a time, its simplified RPG mechanics. I absolutely could not go back to PSO2 classic and I felt like a got a taste of what an action MMO could be. But the slow content cadence, power creep affecting gear and augments, and lack of a real endgame for people that want to do exciting challenges with a consistent group, all made me uninstall and stop playing. I think I stopped before the desert update and played again but stopped before the volcano land update.

I still play NGS quite regularly (taking some breaks here and there) though sometimes I wonder why; I don't think it'll ever change to be much more interesting like I hope it might be. But combat is still pretty fun and the character customization options are fun to play with. But then a large majority of updates are limited-time quests and cosmetic fashion additions, or zone updates in a way such that older content is largely obsoleted, such that only a handful of things are ever worth doing (and the linear gear progression only adds to that problem). My belief is NGS is largely intended to be a whale trap preying on those that succumb to FOMO, yet despite that negative outlook, I do like fighting bosses, and still keep wishing that there were some less repetitive things to do.. They're finally adding a new area this summer, which I guess is good, though I don't think it'll address any concerns I have.

I dunno what the global server is like tbh but the Japanese server is in a dumb af place atm, albeit luckily the most recent update caused lag cause so many people logged in at once, so there is no risk of EOPS any time remotely soon. Sega added a ton of content for NGS, especially since I barely played in 2 years but the incentive for playing is really, really low. On the one hand Sega got greedy and made NGS super grindy like early PSO2 and dailies / weeklies are even restricted to once per account and not character, meaning without spending a buch of money we can no longer make more than a pittance of meseta and only somewhat recently alpha reactors are no longer a pain in the butt to collect, one of the biggest sources of meseta. After half a year of religiously doing dailies and weeklies a day I could afford exactly _one_ new hairstyle because there are a lot of people spending money and therefore making far more money, deciding fashion prices f2p players can't ever hope to compete with unless they grind many hours every day. And each weapon upgrade is 1-2m meseta if you get something good that is worth making in the first place and not just 2% stronger than handouts. And the handouts are the other thing killing incentive, why the hell bother making any effort if you only get peanuts gor it AND even without lifting more than a single finger you can get relevant endgame weapons? Add some unbelievably bad coding in some parts like loading screens softlock literally half the time on certain pcs if you don't have SSD when the original PSO2 loading screens are 99.9% fine and also faster and why play? The point of playing more than a bit now and then is farming and honestly there is just no goddamn point in farming. It's such a gigantic, colossal waste because before NGS PSO2 was the game with the best action combat, I compared it and it is infact smoother than even most DMC games and then NGS went and seriously improved on that even further, especially after they fixed the dumb as hell counter bug where they used a single thread for countering enemies and normal attacks / PAs so you could only do one or the other, farcing you to use pas and get inevitably hurt because countering could not interrupt your current animation which was virtually always too long to avoid getting hit or not use PAs and instead stand around waiting for the enemy / boss to attack most of the time.

With last week's update, a new fire has been ignited IMO. The new area is awesome, the EX augments are all good and support different playstyles, and the story was super good. It almost feels to me like this is a new beginning for the game, not just "hey we added creative spaces and called it version 2" but more like this is the best launch point the game has had since it came out. I really hope it continues to gain steam! I've seen a lot of returning players and new players.

So i tried to return a few months back i dont find much change to the core game itself aka farming an absurd amount of material for something not even that much better than the "limited event"(yes those still going on) weapon they give out for almost free then after a short while of returnning it back to sitting in a lobby n wait for UQ , there r some new mission mode i need to try but at that point i already gave up, it just a glorified fashion show with some mmorpg element n a very broken player driven marketplace
@shaece7983 ай бұрын
they could still salvage the game if they would make everything less of a lottery drop progression, so people can actually have a reason to play the game and enjoy it, make more types of enemies, make, more reasons to fight and play the game other than just for the reason of grinding materials and augments, make more than just potency percent matter so more stat combinations are viable and encouraged. and stop catching everyone up with an event that only takes a day to complete giving no one a reason to play the game and farm because they know they will get everything they need from the few days before patch day.

I think the game is worth playing at its current state. Will try to make this short and not an essay. Unparalleled customization and housing/world building. Good fan service if you’re into that. Combat can be addicting especially if you learn and master all the classes. Game excels at boss monsters big in size with fun attacks and good music. Amazing graphics. No subscription needed and can take a break and come back anytime and catch up easy to endgame players. For cons some mild p2w but nothing outside your usual Korean MMO and it’s not needed at all to clear any content. Major updates can be slow to some people’s standards. Needs better controller/key binding and camera control. Collabs and main story can use some work. Overall rate of the game 7.5-8/10.

It's not exactly perfect, but I do call the game home. However, the huge downside, it seems to take the development team a months to implement quality of life changes and over a year to implement large change. Before, I played other games besides WoW. I thought MMO communities were only an obstacle for players to tolerate, here I am today coming out of my shell and engaging with the community, PSO2 both classic and NGS even reignited my passion for art. I would say the only thing I find least fun would be the gearing system, which seems to depend too much on gambling. It's just something about the community I love, the diversity in characters just gives this Melting Pot sensation as well as oozing this fantasy of being a part of some Galactic Federation. However, to keep a refreshed mind, I do generally swap from NGS, to Classic, to Warframe to avoid burnout.

As a veteran and still playing player. SEGA doesn´t do a good job of marketing for global and that is sad. The main customer is jp. It would be has a bigger player-base if the game would have more languages. Most germans don´t give the game a chance, cause of problems with englisch. Content ist much better then before but the timeinvestment for ultra hard content isnt worth the loot and that is sad. Everyone should look into the game and test it for himself. @lsnexus20806 ай бұрын
played both. NGS has better combat and graphics. more freedom to choose on playstyle. and there's character progression when grinding. its a true classic MMO whereas ToF is basically a gacha game. you can't choose a playstyle since you have to pull for the latest weapon and adapt the new rotation of weapons regardless if you like the playstyle or not simply because of how powercreep works. no character progression when grinding since in ToF you grind for pulls not to make your choice of playstyle stronger. they might be both MMO but one is a gacha game. if you are a spender then ToF doesn't respect your money. since your new weapon will be powercrept anyway. in NGS, your money spent probably goes to cosmetics which ofc you can reuse and combine to any cosmetics you already have.

I've played phantasy Star since sega, and universe was the best. Ps02 ngs2 is anime phasion simulator with a house builder and a constant gear treadmill. It can't be largely successful because it gets story updates maybe once or twice a year, and those are consumable in the first day. From there it's just grinding... grinding... grinding. Grinding with mouse in a blender combat, seriously so many things on the screen I have no idea what's going on. But it can't die because of phasion, where else can I make my robo girl waifu? Most anime games are pre-made gacha girls, stale, boring. But here you get to custom craft your waifu. Of course phasion is where they make their money, most phasion items are behind pay walls and random spins.

What's even the point of having content when that content is not worth running. We have 3 high difficulty bosses released, from which we only have a reason to do one for a weekly. To this day, after 3 years, running around killing low lvl mobs in combat sectors is still the most rewarding content for the average player.
