According to one of the myths about the Lunar New Year, there was almost a Year of the Cat. All of the animals were invited to a banquet with the Jade Emperor, but the Rat tricked the Cat into missing the banquet, so it became the Year of the Boar instead. I’ve also heard a variation where the animals are running a race for the honor, but the Rat still tricks the Cat into losing.

The year of the dog is a Shiba Inu. They look a little like a fox. And the cherry blossom is probably on the figure because the Shiba is a Japanese breed.
