This post showed up as recommended, so I watched it, and quite enjoyed it. I do have a few comments as was in college when these albums came out. In the US the first Traffic album came out a couple of months later AND Dave Mason had quit the group (for the first time) by the time of the UK release. America, being slow to deliver the album, issued the first album as "Heaven Is in Your Mind" before soon retitling it "Mr. Fantasy." Maybe because Mason had left, there was a different cover (Mason no longer in the photos) while two of his songs were dropped for Winwood - Capaldi tunes. It is not vinyl, but Island Records in 2000 released a mono version of the album on CD with the missing US cuts plus the two cuts Traffic cut for the "Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush" soundtrack ( which were the first cuts that Traffic recorded, but went unreleased until the movie came out after the first album's release. They also issued a stereo mix with the US cover, song order, and bonus cuts. The mono may be punchier, but the stereo sounds more 'psychedelic. Makes for a messy catalogue. Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" was not as well reviewed as his earlier albums ("Sunshine Superman" and "Mellow Yellow" in particular with the latter having 'Sunny South Kensington' on it which is my favorite Donovan. but to each his own.) The 60s Donovan albums that Mickie Most produced had the advantage of arrangements ranging from acoustic jazz to almost hard rock which seemed to fit each individual song. While not officially recording the song, King Crimson did a great version of 'Get Thy Bearings' from the "Hurdy Gurdy Man" album. I saw them perform it at Hyde Park in the summer of '69. I lived in London that summer, and in the flat below me, an Eastern European (Hungary?) cellist drifted through for a week. He played several gigs with Quintessence which sparked me to buy their album. And things did look great at Notting Hill Gate - the home of one of my favorite bands, Hawkwind. The first two Ultimate Spinach albums are guilty pleasures of mine. They were slammed by the 'alternative' music press when they came out. Producer Alan Lorber tried to promote a Bosstown Sound focusing, at first, on three Boston bands: Ultimate Spinach, Orpheus, and Beacon Street Union. Reviewers hated this crass ploy, and none of the albums received good reviews. And apparently Lorber ran the show as a third Ultimate Spinach album came out, but only one original member was (tangentially) involved. That record did have Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter as a member before his Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers days. Enough with the boring minutiae.

I have the original stereo American version of the Traffic album and it's different from either of the 2 versions on the CD. Another Lorber psych album was by, Chamaeleon Church. Apparently, he hated drums. Most of the albums he produced had the drums mixed very quietly and far in the background. The drummer you could almost hear on that album was Chevy Chase. In the Chicago area was a band called, The Exceptions. They only did a few singles (that I know of) on the Quill label and then they split up. A couple of them started a new band called, Chicago Transit Authority and the rest started a really cool psych band called, Aorta. Sadly, their second album really stunk! Another psych band which I believe was from that area was Southwest F. O. B.. As far as I know, they only did one album and split up. Half the band became Seals & Crofts and the other half became England Dan & John Ford Coley.

Hey Mr Wyliesmith! Thank you very for taking the time to leave such a detailed and interesting comment. This is so much appreciated 🙂As far as i am concerned, one of the central drivers of operating a vc channel, uploading videos etc... is the interaction with people. And it wasn't boring at all, we are here to share our passion with every one else. And wow, it must have been a tremendous experience to live in London, UK especially in the swinging sixties. I think unconsciously, as sweet-dreamer & utopian, every time I go to London, I look for that kind of attitude, atmosphere
@wyliesmith4244

@@RedVynil Funny that you should mention Chamaeleon Church as Ted Lyons (guitarist and leader) was drafted into Ultimate Spinach for their third album. I had the first Aorta album for years (who can forget the cover?), and two mbers (Donlinger & Been) joined Lovecraft for their one album. Aorta's producer, Bill Traut, had earlier produced the first HP Lovecraft album (only drummer Michael Tegza was left to form Lovecraft). The Chicago scene must have been absurdly incestuous. Marty Grebb was the fourth member of Lovecraft after a stint in the Buckinghams, and then formed the Fabulous Rhinestones with Kal David who had been in an early formation of Aorta. Reading album cover credits for bands from Chicago got my head whirling. While I am not really a fan of the later albums by Traffic (their song '(Sometimes I Feel So) Uninspired' sounded much too apt for me), I love the original 2 (or 3 if you count Last Exit with its mediocre live side). Unfortunately with Mason flitting in and out and different album configurations, I always felt like I was missing something. but man o man, those tracks still sound sweet.

@@frenchvinyladdict I was only in London for the summer and living with distant cousins. Best day? Seeing Family and King Crimson (then unknown to me) open for a listless Rolling Stones in Hyde Park. It was Mick Taylor's first show with the Stones who had not played live in over a year. Hey, but seeing it at least sounds impressive even if the Stones weren't. That night I saw Chuck Berry at the Royal Albert Hall opening for the Who though. The London Underground closed at 10 PM which kept me from checking out the real night life. A car or money for Taxis was required as London rolled up the streets early. Swingin' London?

@@wyliesmith4244 I'm pretty sure I've seen that happen in other areas, too. The short-lived psych world is a huge, massive rabbit hole to get into! So many weird twists and turns can be taken and some take you right back where you started! It's AMAZING how much psych there was back then seeing as how the genre really only existed, for the most part, about 3 years! When I first started putting together The Enpsyclopedia back in the late `90's, I probably had about 36,000 records in my collection but could only find a couple dozen with any real psych on them! You know, the stuff that makes you see things BEFORE you take the drugs! It was looking like I was only gonna get about 5 cassettes of the project made. So, I started looking for more. Now, I've got at least 4000 songs to go into it!! I just added a bunch to the Psych Demos the past few months and have been listening to it all with the updates for the past 3 weeks. At least one more week to go! The Strawberry Alarm Clock just started! I've got about an hour's worth of their stuff to listen to and another 2 hours of S's to get through, then T's through Z's will probably take this next week to get through. Around `99 or `00, I switched over to CD, since I bought a CD recorder, and have built almost 23 CD's worth of the project, so far. (Had life not gotten in the way the past decade or so, I'd be a LOT farther along than this!) I figure that the entire project will be at least 175 full CD's long. I only have a few more minutes to fill on CD 23. Seems to me there was another producer named, Lorber at the same time. Was it Jeff? I think they were brothers. Seems to me they mostly worked on MGM related albums. One of these days, I'm gonna have to try to find a clean copy of the Traffic album. I bought mine used for a quarter back in `84 and it was fairly worn out and had a slight warp in it. I bought the recent CD version but neither copy on that CD had the same version I have. It has the American mono version and the British stereo but not the American stereo, which is one of the reasons I wanted it. I thought I was gonna finally have a clean-sounding copy of the album but, it's not the same as the American stereo version.

Lovely albums. Arzachel is a favourite of mine but sadly only on cd. I don't know Ultimate Spinach, I'll check them out.

Hey Mike! I came across these wonderful albums, partly because my favorite record shop I used to go to back in the days when I was still living in France had a decent heavy blues / psychedelic rock section ; nothing happens by chance 😉 Thanks for being such a loyal audience, this is much appreciated, take care, ++

Just stumbled across your channel. Quintessence's work is definitely under appreciated in some circles. Stellar spiritual trip mixed with the rock scene at the time. Czar is an interesting title from Fontana. Has an out of tune Mellotron curving this weird progressive slant. Some fine titles here.

What's an OG pressing? How do you figure Gandalf is Baroque or sunshine? It's neither. At this point, they were mostly just taking older songs from the `50's and 40's and re-working them into really cool psych tunes. Before this, they had a few singles on RCA Victor under the name, Barracuda. Sunshine psych is stuff like The Yellow Balloon or Spanky & Our Gang. At the moment, I'm too tired to come up with a baroque psych band and I've been listening to my entire Psych Demos collection for the past 3 weeks (one more week to go) but, I think Mandrake Memorial's first album would fall into that category with their electric harpsichord, one of the only bands to have one. There were two versions oof the Traffic album (maybe 3). The original British version, which you showed, the American version, which had a few different songs on it as well as a different title "Heaven Is In Their Minds" and some versions have several "hidden" tracks on ech side, between the actual songs. Ultimate Spinach sounds nothing like Country Joe or The Dreadful Grate. Their second album is somewhat better than the first. Sadly, their third album was just pop and disco. Another great psych band that went disco in the `70's was H. P. Lovecraft. Mostly, their second album was great psych. The first and third weren't very psych at all. They went disco on the 4th album. Or, was it the 5th? The Pillbugs have a few baroque moments.

Hey RedVinyl! Thank you for correcting me when I say bullshit, the comment section is also there for that purpose 😉 The word ''trippy'' would be much more appropriate. I think I remember hearing about Mandrake Memorial but I'd have to look deeper into it. Thanks for the heads-up, also for taking the time to leave such a detailed and interesting comment, this is much appreciated!

@@frenchvinyladdict No problem! (That'll be $10.00.) I've got LOADS of psych so, if you wanna hear something, gimmie your addy and I'll send you MP3's. Although, you can probably find a great deal of it on YT. I'm not exactly picky about what era it's from, as long as it's GOOD psych. And I DON'T mean that disco shit that everybody today calls, "psych"! That stuff is boring as hell!! I've also known a number of people that seem to think ANYTHING from the `60's is automatically psych! I don't fall for that, either. Some of my criteria: mellotron, sitar, tabla, tamboura, tape manipulation, wild panning, bizarre effects, flanger, phase shifters set on Stun, etc.. Although they DO have a scant few good psych tunes, The Dreadful Grate is nothing more than a country rock band, to me. Even Lawrence Welk's music is psych if you drop enough acid! I'm also not interested in garage for this project. I LIKE garage but, 90-some % of it is NOT psych! It's garage!

I agree with a lot of what you like. But HP Lovecraft and Ultimate Spinach going disco? I don't care for either's third albums myself, but disco? Disco wasn't really used as a term until the early 70s when it was just getting started. (I did work in a record store starting in '70, and I looked at the new release books with nary a mention of disco that early.) There must be a better word to describe these albums. They sure weren't dance music.

@@wyliesmith4244 H. P.'s third is good, it's when they shortened their name to Lovecraft in the mid `70''s that they went disco. US at least went pop in the `70's. I have a single of theirs from the `70's and, from what I recall, it was remake of, "(Just Like) Romeo & Juliet". MGM / K14023 / ULTIMATE SPINACH / (JUST LIKE) ROMEO & JULIET / SOME-DAYS YOU JUST CAN'T WIN / PROMO Well, in the `60's, "discotheque" WAS shortened to, "disco" but it didn't refer to the type of music being played, it was just a place where you could go to dance to the music being played. Disco didn't mean the type of music `til about `74. I remember being in the gym at some kind of dance during school hours and Bridget Loftus saying she heard of this new dance called, The Bump and she got another girl to do it with her and others caught on quickly and also started doing it. That was at least early `74. This looks to be from somewhere between `73 and `76. MERCURY / SRM-1-1031 / LOVECRAFT / WE LOVE YOU WHOEVER YOU ARE / PROMO. In my collection, it's between Capt. Beefheart's "Unconditionally Guaranteed" and Spirit's "Spirit Of `76".
